Team AC and Team CB learnt all about what life was like in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, during the first part of the school year. The children discovered how even though their topic was based around history, they were still learning about Geography at the same time. This allowed children to understand how their curriculum links together in a variety of different ways. The children used modern day and historical maps to locate their own local area, as well as further away as Skara Brae. The children focussed on the location of Skara Brae using compass point knowledge and map skills, and how this location can be found in the Orkney Islands, Scotland! The children also learnt about who the Romans were and why they invaded Britain, Teams AC and CB, experienced being a Roman for the day at Murton Park, establishing more of an understanding of why the Romans invaded and occupied Britain. Upon returning to the classroom, the children used maps to locate the countries invaded by the Romans, expanding the Roman Empire, and were able to state the continent / continents that the Roman Empire encompassed.

Wow! The children in Teams JD, DB and HG have been super busy during the Autumn term. The children have been learning all about Europe and discovering the different countries that make up the continent. The children studied hard to locate the various countries, by using their map skills digitally, using globes and in books, to be able to complete their own maps. The children were already aware of the term European Union, but came to understand that the UK were no longer a part of the Union, but this did not stop them being part of the continent. The whole year group were amazed to learn that Russia was also a part of Europe, and had many questions regarding the conflict between the Ukraine and Russia. We decided to study six major countries for the children to learn about, developing an understanding about different cultures, climates and cuisines, taking part in a food tasting session with foods specifically coming from that region. They also focussed upon the key topographical features found in these localities. Following this the children looked at the water cycle and the effect that this has on land changes over time. Towards the end of the Autumn term, the children in the three year groups, developed a more indepth understanding about Greece and how the similarites and differences between modern day Greece and Ancient Greece. The children superbly used their history knowledge to help them with this, and we were all amazed at the buildings or ruins that are still a part of the Grecian landscape still today! We are really excited to share our learning with you below. In Team JF the children have been learning all about the weather during the Autumn term. They have been on a walk around their loval area, experiencing the effects of Autumn in their own locality. The children have been introduced to new vocabulary based on weather around the world, expanding on their previous knowledge, using compass directions and learning more about the world that we live in. Team JF have discovered that there are seven continents and five oceans, and how there is an imaginary line around the Earth called the Equator. The children have developed their understanding about how it gets warmer towards the Equator and how it gets much colder the closer you travel to the North and South Poles! This helped the Team JF Geogers when it came to deciding about appropriate clothing to wear in certain types of weather conditions and why. Take a look at the children's fabulous learning below. In Team CH, our Year 1 Geogers have been very busy during the Autumn term! They have been investigating the weather and learning about the different weather patterns that can occur throughout the world. The children have broadened their understanding about the world around us, by naming the different continents and oceans on a world map using the school atlases and globes, as well as online maps.
Take a look at their fabulous Geography learning below. During the 1st part of the Autumn term the children of Park Street have settled superbly into their learning of their Geographical topics. Each year group, throughout the school, has been focussing upon an aspect of Geography as part of their topic area of learning. In Team EO, the Reception / Year 1 Geogers have been out and about exploring the locality surrounding the school, on their welly-walks. The children have frquented the school's nature reserve, observing the effects of the seasons on the plants and trees. They have thoroughly enjoyed the experience, where they have witnessed Autumn in all of it's splendour and have compared this to other seasons throughout the year. These wonderful Geogers have been learning about the weather, introducing new vocabulary into their learning and discovering the effects of extreme weather around the world. The children developed their skills and knowledge about how to describe the weather and what it is like during different seasons of the year. Take a look at their experiences. In Team CH, the children have been learning the twelve months of the year. They spoke about how months are measurements of time, that consists of 28 or 30 days. Next, they sang along to a song that helped them to remember the order of the months. Using this song, the children then ordered the months of the year correctly. After this, they explored pictures that reminded them of the four seasons and matched key vocabulary to a season. Finally, after lots of talking the children matched the months into seasons.
Team LL and AF are thoroughly enjoying our work on The Extreme Earth. we have explored the make up of the Earth and looked more closely at plate tectonics. Following this, we have looked at a range of natural disasters. We have focused on a region of the Earth called the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is where may of the plates of the Earth meet and results in a high volume of earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. We have applied our map skills and geographical vocabulary to locate and describe the position of various locations. HISTORY FOCUS: We have researched a range of historical natural disasters and the impact they had on communities locally and on a global scale. Pretty fascinating stuff!
This week Team JF took part in a seasonal walk in Wombwell. The children were incredibly observant whilst being very sensible and safe. As they set off from the school grounds, they started to look at the changes to our environment during this season. The children stopped at regular intervals to discuss what they could see and why these changes were occurring. As they arrived at their destination (a large open field space) the children split off into small groups to explore the surroundings and hopefully tick off some of the autumnal changes. Miss Fury was so proud of the way the children conducted themselves and how engaged they were in their learning. When they arrived back at school, they looked closer at some of their findings that they brought back and discussed these. The children then proceeded to complete their science investigation pro forma as a class to present their findings. Once again, our curriculum identifies as being closely linked together with other areas of learning!
In Team EO, teh children have been learning about the weather in Geography, in particular day to day weather in each season. The children have also been learning about the names of the countries that make up the UK. The children have tried really hard to remember the months that are in each season. Team EO have also been studying about the hours of daylight and how these get less in Autumn and that the nights get longer.
n Geography, we recapped last weeks learning on the day to day weather in each season and the names of the countries in the UK. In Science, we have tried really hard to remember the months each season is in. We have also learnt that the hours of daylight get less in Autumn and that the nights get longer. In provision, the children were challenged to draw or create the flags of the countries in the UK. Here is some of their fabulous learning! In Team CH's science learning this week, the children have been learning about the weather and have been observing changes in the weather. The children discussed what time of day it was, what the weather was doing and what they think it will do later. The children noticed that some clouds were white and smooth at the bottom and some clouds were dark and bumpy at the bottom. The children's learning of science links well with their study of the weather as part of their Geography learning for the Autumn term.
