We have been exploring Great Britain. We have discovered exciting mysterious creatures such as the Loch Ness monster which legend says can be found in Scotland. Loch is another word used in Northern Ireland and Scotland for lake! Wales have their own unique word for lake which is llyn.
As we adventured through the north of Northern Ireland we found interesting examples of physical geography such as the Giant’s Causeway!

Team JF have been working incredibly hard on their Geography topic ‘Exploring Europe’ . We have identified and researched a variety of European countries, their capitals and famous landmarks. From this, we have extended our knowledge of map skills by reading and locating four figure grid references.
As the term progressed, we focused on the formation of mountains and rivers. Here we identified the features of them and explored the largest ones in Europe. The children in Team AC have been busy learning about our Geography topic 'Life in different places'. We have started to compare where we live to life in Columbia, South America. We have looked at maps, atlases, globes and the internet to research where Columbia is, what continent its in and what the climate is like there. The children have had lots of interesting questions about Columbia and we are combining this with our science work looking at the habitat of Columbia with its rich variety of plants and animals to be found there.
Since returning to school in September following partial school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been working hard to identify the areas of learning individual pupils may need to catch up on. As always, we are making core subjects the priority - particularly the basic skills of numeracy and literacy. However here at Wombwell Park Street, we are passionate about our broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum offer and feel now more than ever pupils need the opportunity to engage in a wide range of learning opportunities. Children will be accessing the full range of curriculum subjects this year. If you wish to discuss our current curriculum provision further or have any specific questions relating to geography in school do not hesitate to contact school and Mrs Longden Deputy Head can provide further information.

In the Autumn Term our team looked at the local area in which we live (Wombwell) and our surrounding area (Barnsley). We looked at familiar places around Wombwell and Barnsley and named them. The children had to learn how to write their addresses and they became familiar with vocabulary such as village, town, city, country and continent. They had the opportunity to look at aerial view maps and plans of the area around the school and we used google earth to help them to understand where Wombwell ‘fits in’ when considering the position of other places and the wider world. We also linked our Geography work with Literacy and compared where we lived with where Katy Morag lives in her stories. |
