In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white person. At that time, white people and black people were kept apart in some American states this was known as segregation. Her actions lead to a bus boycott and eventual changing of the law so that people were no longer segregated. Now every year on 4th February we think about Rosa Parks and how she changed American history forever.
Team AC wanted to find out more about Rosa Parks. Through watching videos and reading information they discovered why she became known. They discussed what they had found out, then thought of questions they would like to ask Rosa. The children acted out the incident on the bus, freeze framing at different points to get reactions from the characters. Finally using ‘hot seating’, they asked Rosa questions about what she might have said and thought at that time.

Over the past few weeks Team CW have been seeing how food changes over time. In separate sealed bags they placed a slice of bread that had been handled, a piece of bread straight from the packet, a strawberry, an apple core and a banana skin.
Over a few weeks the Rainbows used magnifying glasses to see how the food changed over time and discussed what they could see. There didn't seem to be much happening at the start, and the processes of change were very slow, then suddenly lots of changes seemed to come at once. Comments from the children included "It's gone furry," "The bread has got green, brown and yellow bits growing on it!" "The strawberry is brown and there is lots of juice coming out of it," "The strawberry has nearly disappeared!" and "the banana skin has gone brown and black!" The rainbows could see that the bread that was handled very little did not change much at all but went very hard. They knew that bacteria had grown and changed the food and it was dangerous to touch. Here are some photos of what happened. What a fantastic half term of learning they have had in the Shooting Stars! The children loved their "Magical Storyland" theme and have been so excited to learn about a new story each week.
Here is a photo of their Learning Journey display which showcases their learning over this half term. The children have been able to look back on this to re-cap their learning and recall what they found out previously, This will be added to their nursery floor book so the children can continue to re-visit it and talk about their past learning as they begin their new learning journey next half term. Team CW have revisited their learning throughout this half term. Their topic has been "Magical Storyland" and they have learnt about lots of different traditional tales and fairy stories.
Each day, the Rainbows recap their learning and talk about what knowledge they have learnt across the curriculum. They talk about work they have completed and recap key vocabulary and what these words means. The Rainbows love sharing their achievements and accomplishments with each other! They add their learning to their learning journey display and this helps them to revisit it throughout each day. Here are some of their achievements! Team EO and Team JF have been learning the key vocabulary to describe the features of a castle. They have labelled pictures and explained why castles have these features and how they can defend themselves.
In year 1 they have been learning that ‘chronological’ means putting events in order in which they occurred from first to last.
The children watched a short video to show how castles changed over time and then they created a timeline of castles and events. They discussed the materials that castles used to be made from, such as wooden motte and bailey castles, how wood easily sets on fire and that this was one of the factors why castles were later built from stone which helps to date them. The children looked at the years in which the castles were built to help put them in chronological order. Team JF have been learning why castles were built, the different types of castles and the benefits of each type of castle. They know that castles evolved from being made from wood to stone and the good and bad points of building each type.
Today the History Ambassadors met to discuss the pupil voice questionnaires. It was a really interesting exercise and brought up lots of good points about history in school, and some points we can discuss and work towards changing in the future.
Here are a few of the positive things we found; - Most children enjoy history and their favourite topics are The Egyptians, Vikings, Romans and the Stone Age period. -Children enjoy special learning days such as history days. -Children could say that history is important because it helps us understand the world now. - They could recall some facts from previous learning, including topics in previous years. Here are some points we would like to improve in the future; - when asked about the skills historians need some children found this tricky to recall. - Lots of children are really interested in the Vikings and would like the opportunity to learn more about them (including seeing a real Viking long ship.) -Some children are interested in topics that are not covered at school and would like the opportunity to learn about them. The Plague was mentioned a few times, as was historical natural disasters. -The children would like more historical trips or visitors in school to support learning. There is a lot to talk about and decide what actions we would like to put in place so the ambassadors are going to meet again after half term. We also spoke about our significant individual dress up day after half term. The ambassadors are keen to teach the younger classes about their character and had the opportunity to research them. Keep revisiting the blog to find out more! Today Park Street has been celebrating the life of the inspirational Rosa Parks. Classes through school have been learning about the changes she brought in her lifetime. The two quotes above are from two year 1 pupils who were amazed at what Rosa achieved.
Year 1 and 2 have been discussing what questions they would like to ask Rosa Parks. There were some fantastic discussion points and they generated some brilliant questions. Please see the gallery below to read what some year 1 children would like to ask her. Team AC have been learning to develop an awareness of the past through research and discussion. They have used the internet to find out about the topic through research and have begun to describe and explain the changes that happened throughout the stone age to the iron age.
