As yesterday was St George's Day, Nursery decided to celebrate it today. Firstly they spoke about the story of St George and found out that it is a legend from a long, long time ago. One of the children asked "Is it ancient?" What a fabulous word and in the correct context too!! They read the story of George and the Dragon and the children were fascinated. They thought George was very brave to slay the dragon and save the princess and they talked about why he is so famous now. Then they found out that some people celebrate with Morris Dancing so they watched a clip of it on the interactive whiteboard. They noticed that some dancers had sticks and some had bells tied around their legs so they tapped their claves and shook their bells along to the music. Then they stood up and had a go at some of the moves to the music- tapping their claves and moving their bodies at the same time was quite tricky but the children did a brilliant job. Some of Nursery even tried to tap their sticks with a friend like the Morris dancers did!
They also spoke about the flag with the St George's cross and how special it is as it is the flag of England. During provision time, the children were given a challenge to create their own flag using paint and collage materials. In the painting area, they had to be careful to go down and across with their brush to make the cross shape. In the creative area, they had to select red materials to decorate it in any way they liked. The children also had a castle with different knights and dragons etc in the small world area and a challenge to try to follow instructions to draw a castle. The afternoon children loved the story so much that they decided to build their own castle and act out the story outside. This term Team JF have centred their art and DT around the castles topic. They have produced some fantastic shield and castle designs, focusing on the intricate details. As part of their DT project this term, the children have designed and built some amazing castles of their own!
Team JF have been creating their own castle paintings during their computing lesson! The children tried really hard to ensure their pictures were accurate and included the key features of castles they have been learning.
Here is some of their hard work! Team CW have been looking back at all their learning this half term on their learning journey timeline. Looking back at the timeline has supported them to reinforce their knowledge and develop their understanding of chronology.
They have been discussing the topics and activities they took part in and told their friends what they learnt. They recalled key vocabulary and have enjoyed sharing their knowledge of recent topics. During the spring term Year 6 have explored the life and times of the Ancient Egyptians. They started by looking at the geography and chronology. They looked at where Ancient Egypt would come on their class timeline and considered when it was in relation to other historical periods and people they had covered. They compared ancient and modern maps and explored implications of position on land use. They were lucky enough to visit Tut 22 an exhibition at Experience Barnsley. They have looked at the work of famous archaeologists such as Howard Carter and influential historic and modern archaeologists. Egyptologists from Barnsley (Joann Fletcher and Ernest Jones). They have explored the importance of evidence and sources. Some of the key areas they have learnt about include: structure of society, religion and beliefs, importance of preparation for the afterlife, land use, leisure, roles of different individuals, importance of the pyramids, innovation and legacy. Pupils have had the opportunity to generate their own enquiry questions and carry out research. They have also made links across the curriculum and through conceptual learning.
Team LL developed their printing skills by exploring images, tomb art and hieroglyphics from Ancient Egypt and then created printing blocks to create print work.
