Once again a BIG well done to all of our Amazing 'Readers of the Week' this week! Keep going Park Street! ![]()
Another week means another library visit for our Park Street pupils. This week it was the turn of Team DB who thoroughly enjoyed their visit. Mrs Fitchett accompanied the class down there and had handily taken her library card so that she could take some books out to share with our children back in school. I am fairly certain I saw her arms full with books about trains and history! The class really enjoyed their session and have already been eagerly asking about when they will be returning - this is what I love to hear! Team DB will be heading off to explore more next week and we'd love to see some children with their library cards taking out books if they so choose!
Welcome back! We hope you have had a lovely restful and memorable half term at home with loved ones. This week, in true Park Street style we have been working our socks off in all things reading, be that phonics, comprehension skills or reading for pleasure.
In addition, today has marked the start of our Summer reading campaign where our children through school visit the library as part of our Incredible Me sessions. Mrs Firth and Team LF are the lucky class who have been for the visit today and the children and staff came back to school full of enthusiasm from their visit! The class were initially introduced to the library and the way it works, discussing different books such as fiction and non-fiction and how we can identify these. The children were then given a quiz around the library where they had to locate different types of books. Team LF were thrilled to participate in a story with the librarians before concluding their session by learning more about the history of Wombwell Library. It sounds like its been a truly wonderful afternoon. Next up on our library visits are Team DB - be sure to check back to see how they got on! A continued HUGE well done to all of our Readers of the Week! So amazing to be handing out so many Platinum Awards out! I wonder who the overall winner will be! Keep it up Team Park Street! ![]()

In reading, Team LL and AF are thoroughly enjoying reading Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll – exploring vocabulary use and text features of historic fiction. The classes have been reading a wide range of texts linking to their history theme of Ancient Egypt: information texts, extracts from Howard Carter’s diary, contemporary newspaper articles about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb from 1922, websites and online information. Within reading lessons the classes have explored a range of narrative extracts, poems and non-fiction texts. Year 6 have had a focus on vocabulary – applying a range of strategies to develop their breadth of vocabulary, considering the impact of word choices and developing accurate definitions. The teams have been developing inference skills by unpicking the concept of ‘impression’. They have been describing the impression they have of a given character and then supporting their views with concise and accurate evidence from the text. Year 6 have also been developing summarising skills.
This half term, we have really enjoyed reading books about our Amazing Animals theme. Our core book is Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell and we have been reading and re-reading it so we can learn to join in. We learnt the words "perfect" and "fierce" from this book and have been trying to use them in our speech. In our reading area, we have six copies of this book and the children are enjoying reading it with their friends.
While reading our books we have been learning to go from front to back, turning the pages carefully one at a time and pointing to the writing left to right. |
