In Team CH the class have been giving their all to developing their reading through Read Write Inc phonics and Read Write Inc comprehension. The class have been developing confidence in the accuracy and fluency of their reading to support them in the coming months as they prepare for their Phonics Screening Check. We are super proud of you all - keep it up!

The children in EYFS had a wonderful Bedtime Story Day to end the half term today. The children were invited to wear their pyjamas and bring their favourite bedtime story to share with their friends. During the day we shared lots of lovely stories while curled up under blankets. We even read some stories by torch light! Some different grown-ups from around school visited our classes to share their favourite stories and we finished the day with a hot chocolate and yet another lovely story time.
The children and staff had a magical day and we all agreed that WE LOVE BOOKS! Please see our class blogs for further details and photos. A HUGE well done once again to the Readers of the Week this week, who were beaming with pride when award with their certifi-card! So AMAZING to hear the gasps in Golden Book assemblies when so many children are achieving well! ![]()
Over the course of the Spring Term, Team JD have been working incredibly hard in their reading. They have been using the text driver 'WildLives: 50 Extraordinary Animals that Made History' to facilitate their writing and provide them with a deeper understanding of the way in which non-fiction texts are designed. They have looked carefully at organisational devices, subject specific vocabulary and applied what they have read to a range of different reading VIPER skills. Feedback around the text has been great with the class saying they felt it was inspiring and entertaining to read and that it was an excellent book full of wonderful stories of remarkable animals.
A massive well done to our Park Street team this week! It is so amazing to see that week on week, we have more and more children working their way up the bronze, silver, gold and platinum awards system! What is always so lovely to see too is their BIG smiles on their faces when they proudly stand in Golden Book! An extra special mentions to Thomas in Team CH this week who was so incredibly proud of himself for his achievements. Staff were blown away by his reaction! It was a pleasure to witness such pride and excitement! ![]()
In reading, Team DB have worked really hard to unpick non-fiction texts. They have been reading about individuals from the class text, ‘Herstory’. The children have enjoyed learning about women, past and present, who have been so influential throughout history to the modern day. They have focussed a lot on vocabulary and determining why certain phrases have been chosen, and deepening their understanding about the definition of new words. Vocabulary and retrieval have been the team's key VIPERS focus. The class have spent time each week unpicking texts and using images and actions to develop an understanding of unfamiliar words, enabling them to use these in context and explain their meaning. They have then built upon their fluency skills through echo reading.
As friends, parents and children of Park Street will be aware, our reading outdoor provision was in much need of some TLC. Over the summer the paintwork was restored and now we are ready to commence phase 2 of our plans. Phase 2 involves children across school, including our Junior Reader Leaders working closely with Mrs Fitchett our Art Co-ordinator to design and bring the reading area to life. Using wooden boards, our children have been bringing ideas, drawings and artwork to life as they have included some of their favourite book characters on our boards which will form a back panel to the reading hut to really make sure all reading inspires our children at every opportunity.
Well done once again to all of our AMAZING Park Street Readers of the Week! Keep it up Park Street! So thrilled to see so many reaching their next target areas and all with SMILES on their faces! Every child a READER! ![]()
Team HG have linked their reading to their class book: Amazing Evolution. The class used pages of the non-fiction book to aid their understanding of evolution and they have found it absolutely fascinating. Vocabulary has been a key VIPERS focus. Using images and actions to develop an understanding of unfamiliar words. Retrieval has also been a key vipers focus where children have been locating relevant information beginning with reading questions effectively, identifying key information, skimming and scanning for target language and forming a suitable answer. Team HG are currently focussing on inference questions; justifying their ideas by referring back to the text. The class are also continuing to develop their fluency skills through choral reads and echo reading.
A huge well done to our Readers of the Week for this week! It is so amazing to see so many children achieving well and reading at home with their special people! Just a reminder that WPSPS expects children to read their reading book at home each evening and an adult / the child if old enough, should mark this in their reading diary! Every child has an age appropriate book and if their assessed reading age is less than their actual age, they have one at the relevant age too so as they can access this independently. Please read the age appropriate book to them if they can not access it themselves. Every child a reader! ![]()
