Following the children's interests, we have enhanced our water area with penguins and polar bears and we have been talking about where they live and what kind of conditions they like. This is perfect to support children's early understanding in Geography.

To link in with our story of the week, we made and ate porridge for our snack today. Firstly we talked about the dry porridge oats and some children knew they needed to be mixed with milk and cooked before we could eat them. The children had the opportunity to pour the oats into a bowl and add milk before all having a good mix. Once it was cooked in the microwave, the children all had the chance to choose a topping and then taste it. They talked about what it tasted like and some children thought it was "just right" like Goldilocks did in our story. Finally, the children wrote their name onto a chart to show whether they liked the porridge or not and we counted how many were in each column. We found out that most children in nursery did like porridge! Yummy! Our number of the week is number 3 and there are 3 bears in our story! We used the Numberblocks to help us learn that three is one more than two and to recognise the number. On our Maths table we have had a challenge to sort different objects into boxes according to whether they represent 1,2 or 3. Some children were amazing at explaining why they had sorted them in the way they had.
Our focus book this week is Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have read the story and we are going to keep re-reading it over the week so the children can learn to join in with the repeated phrases. We will be learning to change our voices for the different characters and practising saying their speech from the story. In our provision, we have lots of props, puppets and books about the story to help the children to re-enact it and take on the role of the different characters. Here is some of our exciting provision ready and waiting for the children: Here are some photos of us exploring the provision together so far this week:
Happy New Year everyone!
We are looking forward to welcoming you back into nursery tomorrow for the start of the Spring term. We are also excited to welcome some new children and hope they will settle in quickly and make lots of new friends. Our new theme for learning is "Magical Storyland" and we will be focusing our learning on a different traditional tale each week. |
