On our welly walk last week, we looked for signs of Spring and we spotted lots of blossom on the trees. To reinforce this learning, we decided to create our own blossom tree for our Mother's Day cards. We looked at some photographs of blossom trees first and spoke about them. The vocabulary we focused on during this activity was: tree, branches, flowers, blossom and buds. The children created their blossom by carefully dipping their fingers into paint and then pressing it onto the tree shape. This was great for their physical development as they had to manipulate each finger and press down hard. It was quite tricky but everyone was successful- we hope you like your cards!

Our Amazing Animals theme has moved onto learning about creatures that live under the sea this week. We began by watching a clip of different sea creatures and we learnt to say and sign each one using Makaton. The children can now sign starfish, sea horse, whale, dolphin, fish, shark and crab. We also practised saying each one and clapped out the syllables to make sure we were saying all the parts.
Our book of the week is "Commotion in the Ocean" and we have enjoyed finding out about different sea creatures from this book. It is a rhyming story so the children have been trying to join in with the rhyming words while I read it. Here are some photos of us busy learning in our provision so far this week: In EYFS we have had a competition to decorate a potato as a book character. Each child was sent home with a potato and asked to choose their own book character to create.
We had an amazing response in nursery and it was clear to see that the children and their families had worked really hard together! At group time today, children were given the chance to show their creation to the class and talk about how they made it. The other children also tried to guess the character and the book which it is from. Here are some of the amazing creations: Today on our welly walk we were looking for signs of Spring. We talked about the season of Spring, new life and things growing before we set off and then went on our hunt. We found buds, blossom, daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops and lots of catkins! We learnt lots of new words and talked about the different colours and shapes we could see.
We also heard lots of birds singing and talked about all the different songs. We have some very observant children in the Shooting Stars! We also had fun on our swinging rope today. The challenge was to hold onto the rope and try to lift their feet and swing. This is such a fantastic activity for physical development and it was great to see the children's perseverance as they didn't give up and kept on trying! Some children did manage to swing and were very proud of themselves. We will keep re-visiting this activity over the next few weeks so the children can build up their confidence and skills- we cannot wait to see their progress.
We had a wonderful World Book Day today celebrating our love of books and reading. All children and staff dressed up as their favourite book character and shared their favourite story. Firstly, in nursery we had a parade where every child had the chance to show off their costume and the other children tried to guess who it was. Then they told us about it, what book they were from and why they like it. It was lovely to have discussions about our favourite books! In the morning, we were very lucky to have a reading buddies session with the children from year 3, Each child was paired up with an older child and they shared books together. It was so lovely to see the children enjoying books and both groups of children definitely enjoyed themselves! In the afternoon nursery, we had a story swap! Every teacher in school swapped classes and read a story to their partner class. Our nursery children enjoyed an alternative version of Little Red Riding Hood which was read by Mrs Longden. She was impressed that the children knew and could join in with the repeated phrases- "what big eyes you have!" and "all the better to see you with." Well done, Shooting Stars! The afternoon children also attended a special assembly with the rest of the school to celebrate books, share everyone's costumes and listen to Miss McGinnes read "Giraffe's Can't Dance" dressed as a giraffe! Finally we had the very difficult job of choosing a winning costume from morning and afternoon nursery. After some deliberation, we finally chose "We're going on a bear hunt" from morning nursery and "Elmer" from the afternoon. Well done, girls!
We have been artists today in nursery as we looked carefully at some daffodils. Firstly we spoke about the shapes and colours and then we looked carefully and tried to draw what we could see using pastels. We also had a go at the painting easel and mixed our own colours to paint with.
As we drew, we learnt the words: daffodil, flower, petals, leaf and stem. Look how hard we are concentrating! We have introduced a voting system into our reading area. Each morning when children come into nursery, they can put a cube onto the tower of the book they would like me to read for story time. Once all the children have voted, we count how many votes we have for each book and then decide which is the most and which is fewer. The children know that the tower with the most cubes is the tallest tower and shows us the book we will share at story time.
As well as promoting lots of talk about reading and lots of mathematical thinking, this activity also supports our early understanding of democracy which is one of our British Values. |
