Today children and staff were invited to wear odd socks to kick off our Anti-bullying week in school. In nursery, we looked at everyone's socks and decided if they were the same or odd. We noticed and talked about all the different patterns and colours on them. We also discussed how being different is okay and linked this to our odd socks as well as other ways in which we are all different.

Today we participated with the whole school in "We Love Words" day. The children were all invited to come dressed as a word. In nursery, our words included: magical, sleepy, rainbow, blue and superhero! Morning nursery: Afternoon nursery We took turns to guess each other's words and we talked about what they all meant. We also went on a parade through the other early years classes to show them our outfits. It was very difficult to choose two winners but we finally decided on these lucky ones:
The children loved exploring mixing colours in our painting area today. They learnt to mix powder paint with water and mix in a palette to make their paint. Then they explored mixing different colours together to make new ones. The children were fascinated and spent lots of time engrossed in this activity. There was such a lot of learning and lots of lovely language used too.
We are continuing our colour and light theme with a focus on rainbows this week. Today we introduced the theme by singing different rainbow songs to help us to learn the order of the colours and to help us learn the colours indigo and violet. Then we used a singing hands clip to help us learn the Makaton signs for the colours. We practised saying and signing lots of different colours and will keep practising this over the week.
In our provision so far, we have been colour mixing in the painting area, having a go at lots of different colour themed puzzles and jigsaws and investigating colour with kaleidoscopes. torches and coloured blocks. For our funky fingers activity, we have been using tweezers to pick up fruits and sort them by colour into the fruit pie. At story time, we read the story of Noah's Ark and spotted the rainbow at the end, We learnt that the rainbow is God's promise to never flood the world again. We found out that we see a rainbow after the rain when the sun comes out. What a lot of learning already this week and it is only Monday! Today on our welly walk, we enjoyed celebrating together with a pretend bonfire party. Firstly, we explored the nature reserve to find sticks of all different lengths. There was lots of Maths involved in this and we used the words- big, huge, long, longer, short, small, little, shorter and medium sized to describe our sticks. We worked together to carry the sticks and place them together to build a bonfire. Once it was finished, we sat around our bonfire and celebrated together. We sang bonfire night songs, made patterns in the air with our stick sparkers, pretended to be fireworks and pretended to eat burgers and hot dogs!
Finally, on our return to nursery we had special snack of hot chocolate and parkin (real this time!) We spoke about staying safe and having fun on Bonfire Night with our families. Over the course of the week, we have been talking lots about the sights and sounds of fireworks. Today we used what we had learnt to help us create our own firework dance with ribbons. Firstly, we curled up small and blasted off, practising different gross motor movements which was great for our physical development. We accompanied our movements with sounds such as BANG, BOOM, POP,. WOOOOO. WEEEEE, WOOOSH!
Then, we played the song "Firework" by Katy Perry and performed our dance to the music. Here are some photos of us in action! It was our day to engage in a food based activity today so we decided to make edible sparklers. Earlier in the week, the children were unsure what sparklers were so we looked at some photographs and talked about them. We also spoke about real sparklers being hot and dangerous so they needed to hold them at arms length and stay with a grown up.
Firstly, we recalled how to melt chocolate from earlier in the term and then dipped a breadstick into chocolate to create the end of the sparkler. Then the children used their fine motor skills to carefully sprinkle sweets onto it to create the sparks. At home time, the children noticed that the chocolate had set and gone hard again. Super learning, Shooting Stars! I hope you enjoyed eating your creation! Our number song of the week is "5 Little Fireworks" to link in with our weekly theme. At our group times, we have been using our fingers to represent the fireworks in the song and taking one away each time, We have used the words "less" and "how many left?" to help us talk about the Maths. The props were left out in the Maths area for the children to explore independently with their friends.
We continued with our firework creations today by working on a big scale! We rolled out a large sheet of black paper to represent the night sky and then we added colour using paints. For a different technique, we used brushes to splatter the paints and we also used pipettes to drop paint on. The children noticed that they made firework patterns as they hit the paper and they practised saying firework words (boom, bang, woosh, pop, wheeeee) as they dropped the paint onto the paper. Finally, the children shook glitter all over the top of the paint to make it sparkle and recalled the words glitter, sparkly, sparkle, glittery and shiny from yesterday.
For a focused activity today, we had a challenge to create fireworks in the night sky using cotton buds and glittery paint on black paper. Our challenge was to use our fine motor skills to manipulate the small cotton buds to create different patterns. We tried to draw lines up, down and across, circles, spirals, zig-zags, dots and wavy lines. We have some very skillful, careful artists!!
