It has been so lovely and hot this week, the children decided they would visit the seaside on their role play train journey today! We extended the role play by visiting the station cafe and buying a ticket on the platform before boarding the train to the seaside!
The children loved taking their shoes and socks off to paddle in the water and explore the sand with their bare feet.

Today the morning children decided to build their own train outside so they could travel to different places. They worked together and used lots of different resources from our construction site. They thought about the different parts that a train would need and chose suitable materials. Great team work, Shooting Stars!
Our book of the week is "The Magic Train Ride" and we will be focusing our learning around the theme of travelling by train. This book has a lovely repetitive, rhythmic structure which we will be encouraging the children to join in with.
Today in the outdoor area, we have been role playing our own train journey. Firstly we worked as a team to draw a large train track on our playground floor with our chunky chalks. Then we took turns to wear our "Thomas the Tank Engine" suit and drive the train around the track. The other children were the passengers and had to get their tickets stamped before they could get on the train. There was lots of language modelled and used during this activity including: train, tracks, engine, carriage, ticket, station, ticket collector, passenger and platform. On the way down to the nature reserve today, we carried out a survey of the different coloured cars we could see parked around our school grounds. We worked together to spot the cars, talk about the colours and then record on a tally chart. Then we counted up how many of each colour, wrote the number and worked out which was the most and least popular.
Some of the children were so excited by this activity and the morning children were amazed to spot 7 different white vans!! Brilliant Mathematics, Shooting Stars! Thursday is baking day in nursery and today we baked biscuits in the shape of different vehicles. A group of children worked with Mrs Hart to follow the recipe and weigh and mix all the ingredients to make the dough. Then everyone carefully rolled out their own dough and then chose and cut their own vehicle shape using a cutter. They smelt delicious as they were cooking!
In our Maths group time today, we have been sorting our types of transport in a different way- by whether they travel on the land, in the air or in the water.
During provision time, the children had a go at sorting the vehicles independently by clicking and dragging them on our interactive whiteboard. As a focused activity this week, we have been making our own vehicles in the box modelling area. The children chose which kind of vehicle they would like to make and then selected materials they thought would be good to use. They learnt how to attach materials using tape and glue and practised lots of cutting and sticking skills.
This week in our painting area, we have been printing using paint and different objects. We began the week by printing with different vehicle shaped sponges. We had to dip the sponge into the paint and then press it onto the paper to make the picture. Later in the week we used our toy vehicles. We enjoyed driving them through the paint and then driving them around on our paper to make vehicle tracks. We tried to drive them up and down, across and around on our paper to make different patterns.
In our investigation area this week, we have been exploring with magnets. Our focus words have been: magnet, magnetic, stick and attract. The children have been fascinated with how the magnets attract and repel each other and some have spent a long time exploring. Some children also enjoyed taking a magnet for a walk around nursery to see what things were magnetic- great exploring Shooting Stars!
At group time we have been learning to say and clap out the syllables or beats in lots of different vehicle names. This really supports our speech development as we practise saying the different parts of the words as we clap them. It is also really great for supporting our early phonics skills which will in turn help us to be good readers!
As well as clapping out the words, we have been counting the syllables in each one by counting how many claps we did. We have been showing how many on our fingers and then sorting the vehicles by if they have 1, 2, 3 or 4 syllables. Lots of great Mathematical learning too! |
