Reception Rainbows
Class blog 22-23
Last week The Rainbows were very busy with their Christmas Nativity and beginning all things Christmas.
We learnt about number 8 in Maths and then sang Eight Mince pies in the Baker shop about our new number and we looked at how we could decorate a tree with 8 decorations or make a Octoblock using the multilink. Later in the week we recapped on shape and working out what shape was wrapped up. We used the wooden nativity characters to tell the story in the reading area and in the creative area made decorations and nativity scenes. We modelled writing lists and cards. In the painting area we had a go at swirling paint to make a starry night scene in the style of Van Gogh. In the role play area we have been putting on the Christmas hats and making the area Christmassy. In Phonics we have been using ‘Fred fingers’ to spell out cvc words as we as reading ‘green words’ and beginning to read some red tricky words. Next week we will continue with all things Christmassy as well as finding out a little about Hanukah which is a Jewish festival happening at this time.

Last week was rainbow week. We began the week by listening to ‘Life is a rainbow’ and have learnt about colour mixing by experimenting with mixing drops of red, yellow and blue dye and in the painting area mixing colours of the rainbow. We listened to the story of Noah’s Ark and retold it with actions and listened on joined in with songs about the story. We made collage rainbows, doves and made arks using the construction materials. The children demonstrated some excellent teamwork making arks together. Later in the week we thought about how we could describe an animal on the ark to write about it as well as sorting animals and putting them into different sized enclosures. We have learnt the Rainbow song using Makaton and enjoyed other songs about rainbows and colours as well as practising our singing for our Christmas concert. In maths we learnt about number 7 and that when counting we do 1 to 1 and the last object we count is our stopping number. We sorted groups of different coloured objects and practised counting to see which colour had the most objects. Later in the week we did more sorting by sorting animals so that only 7 could be in a group. Last week was Anti-Bullying week. We started the week with Odd sock day and the story of Simon Sock. We talked about the meaning behind the day, shared our odd socks and matched pairs of socks to identify the odd ones. We decorated our own odd socks using creative materials, pens and paint.
During the week we thought about ‘kindness’ we sorted actions into kind and unkind. We made a kindness heart to display with our thoughts on what are kind actions and words. We listened to the story of Elmer designed our own elephants, made large elephant ears and made incredible me! Certificates our friends. This weeks stories taught us about the importance of being kind, playing with and accepting people who are different. That we are all different from each other and special. We listened to some positive songs from Andy and The Odd Socks about kind words and being unique. At the end of the week it was Children in need day and the children enjoyed participating in some events organised by the school council such as a Spot scavenger hunt. In maths we learnt about ‘equal’ identifying equal and un equal amounts and using our learning about ‘more and less’ from the previous week to say if an amount is ‘equal, more or less’. Over the past few weeks Team CW have been working hard with Mr Smith, the PE leader, to help develop their gross motor skills.
We have been working on fundamental movement skills. All the children have been listening carefully to instructions to jog, walk in different directions and skip! We have worked on these by doing a variety of games. A couple of examples are the bean game and follow the leader. The children are progressing every week and they follow every instruction given to them! We have been learning two different topics this week. Firstly, we learnt about Road Safety. We explored materials with different torches and investigated which materials were shiny that could help keep us safe in the winter weather and during the darker evenings. We also used a range of materials in our creative area to design hi-vis vests. In the role play area, we had hi-vis vests and lolly pop signs and were able to practise crossing the road. We were able to put this into practise when we crossed the road to Welly Walk!
We learnt about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. We watched a story about animals and how they felt when soldiers came. We knew that before the soldiers came and after they left the emotions that the animals were feeling were “excited” “happy” and “safe.” We talked about how their lives changed when the soldiers arrived and decided that the good emotions had changed and the animals were feeling “scared,” “frightened”, “terrified” and “worried.” We enjoyed making poppies using different materials and textures, and practised our cutting skills to make tissue paper poppies. We all wore our poppy with pride! In maths we learnt about “more” and “less” and could identify these groups of objects. We also learnt about squares and rectangles and their properties. We used the words “straight”, “sides”, “corners”, “length” and “equal” to describe them. In phonics we have been continuing to learn the handwriting phrases for Set 1 sounds and some of us have been “Fred Talking” to segment and blend to read green word cards with CVC words on. Some of us have been orally blending and some of us have been using magnetic letters to write CVC words. On Welly Walk we explored our Autumn woodland and made bark and leaf rubbings. We were able to identify leaves that were smooth, soft, spikey, bumpy and brittle. Everyone looked fantastic for our “wear your favourite word day!” There were some very creative costumes and fantastic words, such as “curious” “hero” “sporty” “dangerous” “love” and “outer space.” We really enjoyed talking about our word and describing it to our friends! Last week we began out topic of Sparkle and Shine. We began the week with two days celebrating and learning about the Hindu festival of Diwali and then two days celebrating and learning about Bonfire Night. The children made sparkly pictures and explored cutting tubes to make firework prints. They designed and coloured mendi hand patterns, made lanterns and rangoli patterns, as well as learning though stories and videos about how Diwali is celebrated by British Hindus. We also looked at how dance and fireworks are important to Diwali, the festival or light. The children recalled the story they learnt through dance before the holiday or Rama and Sita. Wetalked about how the light was to lead Rama and Sita home and that light and goodness would overcome darkness. We also shared some naan bread and poppadoms at snack time. We used our senses to explore some spices used in Indian cooking and made rangoli patterns using paint mixed with spices. Later in the week chidren used their phonics to hear the sounds in words such as bang and try and write some of these sound words. They made shape rockets and used creative materials to make sparklers. They also used their funky fingers to make patterns in glitter with paint brushes.
In Maths we began learning about number 6 and representing the number as well as looking at ordering numbers to 6 and shapes with 6 sides. We hope you have all had an enjoyable half term week and are ready for returning to school on Tuesday. Before the holidays we had fun with our theme of ‘spooky surprises!’ We read Meg and Mog stories, using our Fred talk to read phonetically regular words within the stories. We learned some Spooky Halloween songs, Such as Five Little Pumpkins and Halloween’s Coming! We have created spells and used our fine motor skills to collect spiders and letters from the spaghetti worms, created lanterns, spiders and spooky paintings We have continued with our learning about what it means to be independent. The children have been working in small teams with an adult to set up the outdoor play equipment for the Nursery and Reception classes. Throughout the day they have to keep checking their area to make sure that it is being played with responsibly and help to tidy away at the end of the morning and afternoon. We have also talked about the importance of helping each other to learn new skills. If you are someone that can put your coat on then try and help someone else to learn to do this. We listened to a story called Cleversticks and talked about how the children in the story were all good at different things and used their skills to help their friends. In maths we have been learning about ‘more’ and comparing amounts and carefully counting to check which amount is more On Tuesday, before reading together, we had a special visitor who came to school to talk to us about her work at the Children’s Hospital. The children were really interested in looking at the photos about the hospital and the model helicopter and ambulance that were left with the Rainbows for them to play with. Our visitor, who just happens to be Ruby’s Grandma, also gave us a gorgeous soft Children’s hospital bear for our class. This bear is so cuddly that we decided he would help us feel better if we have a bump. If any parents, grandparents or family have any travel experiences, jobs, hobbies or cultural experiences, such as weddings, then we would be delighted if you could spare 10 minutes of your time to share with the children. All you would need is a photo or object that you could talk about. It all helps to enrich the children’s knowledge and understanding of the world. Alternatively, you could share a photo on Seesaw, with just a bit of background information, so that adults in class can discuss with the children. Our topics this week have been Harvest Time and Jobs. Our first story was “When I Grow Up” and we discussed different jobs in the community. We have been learning about people who help us and have enjoyed being doctors, nurses and patients and making our friends feel well again! We made some amazing scarecrows in our creative area and completed some “What I want to be…” sheets.
We have also been reading The Little Red Hen and learning how hard she worked to harvest the corn and bake the bread without any help. We know that teamwork is very important and have been practising this all week during learning and tidy up time. We read different versions of the story and compared how they were different. We made collages of The Little Red Hen, cut out shapes to create pictures of her, practised developing our motor skills by opening plastic eggs and placing chicks inside and mark making what we think characters in the story might say. We have been learning what the word “independent” means this week and are learning two new things we can do independently! The first is how to out our coat on by turning the sleeves the right way around if they are inside out, putting our arms in and trying to do it up! We have also been learning how to collect powder paint in the creative area ourselves, mix it with water, create different colours and to wash up the palettes and brushes independently! We are going to continue this over the next few weeks so we get really confident with it! In maths we have been learning about number five. We have also been learning the words “more” and “fewer” and can describe amounts. We are able to look at two groups and say which group has fewer objects and how we know that. On Welly Walk we were learning about Autumn. We collected lots of Autumn leaves and seeds including sweet chestnuts and sycamore seeds and were learning to describe them. Our topic this week has been “My Day” We have enjoyed listening to the story of The Tiger who came to Tea, and the unusual events that happened on the day in the story. The children thought about what would happen if a different animal came for tea, such as a Kangaroo jumping all over the house. Later in the week we also shared the story of The Bad Tempered Ladybird and looked at the events that happened over the day and how the time changes. We have also ordered events in our school day and referred to our class timetable to show how the activities we do happen at certain times of the day as part of our daily routines. We asked the children about days that they have enjoyed. If you have photos of a special day that your child could talk about it would greatly help with our topic if you could share one on Seesaw or bring into school. This is that we can encourage talk about special places and develop vocabulary around this. Our activities have included making tiger patterns and ladybirds, linked to our stories. As using the small clocks to show changes in o’clock times. This week we have been having a push on ensuring that we are using manners when asking for our dinners in the dining hall. We have to say that by the end of the week we were very impressed with the number of children who were ensuring they said thank you when receiving their lunches. In maths we have been focussing on subertising. This is the ability to be able to say how many is in a small arrangement of pictures or objects up to 5, without the need to count them. This is something we will practise throughout the year so that the children have mastered this by the end of the summer term. Our number this week has been number 4. In phonics, we have continued to learn new sounds and the corresponding handwriting phrase. Some of us have continued to blend to read words and used magnetic letters and boards to write words. Next week our learning is about “When I grow up.” It is also Diversity week next week so there will be lots of stories and talk about diversity, inclusion and accepting others. The Rainbows have had so much fun taking part in an investigation today to look for a pattern. We were learning about sycamore seeds and wondered if they all spin when they fall or if some do not. We guessed before the investigation so we could see if we were right! We looked carefully at them and noticed that they were different colours and sizes and some were different shapes because they had parts missing. We threw them one by one in the air and marked with a cross if they didn't spin or a tick if they did spin. Most of the seeds spun as they fell but we realised that not all seeds do spin to the ground! We were very surprised! |
