Reception Rainbows
Class blog 22-23
Rainbows were so excited to visit Whistle Stop Valley this week as part of our Places and Transport topic. Some children had not travelled on a coach before so it was a very fun experience. We sung lots of songs until we arrived! It was a very wet day but we had a great day anyway! There was so much to see and do. We were able to travel on the mini train and looked for the fairies in their houses around the track. We listened to a talk about "Fox" the narrow gauge steam engine and learnt that they need coal to work. The lady showed us how the steam travels through the engine to make the wheel turn and we were all able to look inside and see what all the gauges and levers were for. We travelled on a diesel train called "Jay" to the station at the end of the line. It was a very misty day but we tried to see what we could spot through the windows. The highlight had to be travelling through the tunnel because it was so dark, but there were lots of lights in the carriages so we were able to see. We were very brave! When we got off the train we were excited to have lunch, something we had talked about all morning! After lunch we were able to watch the engine turn around on the turn table before it took us back again. We boarded the train for the return journey and then got on the coach to return to school.
We had such a lovely day and the rain didn't dampen our spirits. In fact we were still talking about our trip at the end of the week! Here is a selection of photos from our trip.

As our topic this week has been about caring for the environment we have all had the opportunity to take part in a litter pick on our school playground and playing field.
We spent all week learning about how to look after our environment to keep creatures safe and to make our world a lovely place to live and were dismayed at how much rubbish there was! There were sweet wrappers, crisp wrappers and so many small pieces of litter. We tried really hard to squeeze the litter pickers to pick up each piece of litter. Some of us persevered and kept trying to pick up tiny pieces of plastic to save our environment. We did great team work and made our school a better place to be. Check out these photos of some of us litter picking. This week we have been consolidating our knowledge of subitising and number bonds.
We have been using tens frames and double sided counters to help us. We could identify the amount of each of the colours and say which two numbers make 10 and can recall these numbers quickly. We have also used the part whole method to find two numbers that make 5, and then 10. We moved all of the counters down from the top circle into the bottom two circles and subitised both amounts to say what numbers make 10. Here are some of us working incredibly hard! Rainbows had fun trying to guess what was hidden inside our feely bag. They listened carefully to the sound they could hear when the objects were hit together and decided it sounded like metal or pieces of glass. The mystery objects were in fact old metal keys! Most of the Rainbows had never seen such old and ornate keys before and were astounded by their size! The Rainbows each had the opportunity to examine the keys and thought they seemed very heavy! Some of the words they used to describe the keys were small, medium, big, rusty, old and brown. A few children said they had shiny keys for their house, and that they were much smaller. We discussed the words "dull" and "tarnished" to describe them.
They talked about what they thought the keys could be for and some ideas were houses, a treasure chest, a garden shed and a church! We discussed that the large key may have been used for a really big door and one Rainbow said it might be for a church door and the Rainbows agreed. He we are examining the keys! Here is this weeks bedtime story called "Bird Girl."

Some of us have written our questions and we typed some of them into Google to find out the answers. There were some amazing and interesting questions, that inspired the Rainbows to go on and ask further questions! Here are some examples about what we wanted to ask; Why do dogs like bones? How can cats climb trees? How high can kangaroos jump? Why do dragons breathe fire? Why do dogs bark? Why do Cheetahs run fast? Why are fire ants red? How can we learn? I am sure you will agree how fantastic these questions are! Rainbows have been practising some new sports skills this week as we are getting ready for Sports Day! We have been learning that racing is not just about winning, it is about taking part and that we dont need to always come first, we need to enjoy it and have fun!
We have been learning how to run races from a start line to a finish line and have been taking part in different races. We have practised running races, balancing races and sack races this week! This has been tricky as we need to hold the sack as we jump and to try and keep our feet together inside. We had so much fun competing and trying our best! Here we are in action! This week The Rainbows have been introduced to Rekenreks in maths. Rekenreks are similar to an abacus and we have been learning how to use them.
We know that instead of counting each bead across, we can subitise (instantly look at a number of objects and recognise how many there) and move a number across at the same time. We have been practising this subitising by putting our finger in the correct place and moving the beads across together. We can confidently do this and have achieved and demonstrated this in just a couple of lessons! We have also been spotting patterns and have been able to demonstrate moving a number of beads, and then identifying the number that is one more and moving that number of beads. We will continue using the Rekenreks to learn new skills. Here are some photos of us subitising and showing amounts and then showing one more than the previous number. Our team work skills have been continuing this week on Welly Walk after a break for the holidays. As our topic is all about London, we have been learning the song "London Bridge is Falling Down."
During Welly Walk we worked with a partner to create a London Bridge using sticks. We needed to decide lots of different things to create our bridge and we knew that listening carefully, taking turns to talk and working together would enable us to create our bridges. First we decided a sensible place to make the bridge, then we decided what size and length sticks we would need and finally we decided how we would place the sticks so they stayed together and didn't fall down. Have a look at our photos and see if you think we used our team work skills! Here is this weeks bedtime story "The Golden Key."
