Our theme this week was the ‘Arctic’. We were able to remember that the Arctic is a continent and Team EO impressed me with how they could name the other 6 continents! It seems our song 7 Continent Song has really helped our children – here is the link if you want to listen at home with your child https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DSMZ8b3LE.
We started the week discovering what it was like in the Arctic and we learnt the names of different Arctic animals such as; Polar Bear, Arctic Hare, Arctic Fox, Snowy Owl, Reindeer, Seal, Walrus and Husky. We also learnt different facts about these animals which we had to remember for a ‘What animal am I?’ quiz later in the week! We have been exploring using watercolour paints to paint Arctic landscapes – we learnt that we don’t need too much water though as it makes our paper go all soggy! Some of us began to used the ideas and techniques from our new junk modelling books to help us better our creations. We also enjoyed looking at our class picture of us in our World Book Day costumes - we were able to spot ourselves and friends and we had lovely discussions about the books the characters were from! In Literacy, Year 1 children worked hard to order sequencing cards of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, the children then used these to help them retell the story as their assessed piece of writing. In Maths, Reception children have continued to focus on composition, this week we have focused on identifying when 2 sets are equal and have used dice and fingers to explore the idea of ‘2 equal parts’ and combining them together to get the whole. We have spoke about doubles and used the stem sentences “___ is made of ___ and ___; ___ and ___ make ___.”. We are developing our confidence in recalling doubles facts. Year 1 children have completed some assessment questions as part of assessment week before moving onto explaining that the = sign can be used to show that the whole and the sum of the parts are equal and adding parts to find the value of the whole and writing the equation. In Science, we have begun work on this half-terms inquiry focus ‘observing change over time’. Team EO are going to observe how a cut apple changes over the course of a week. We made predictions with our talk partners and we think that it may go squishy and change colour!

Team EO were very excited to see it begin to snow this afternoon. We spent some time looking at the map of England and the weather forecast! We were able to recognise the United Kingdom and England and we looked at towns and cities on the map that were close to where we are in Wombwell!
We went out into our outdoor area and spent time exploring in the snow. We used brushes to mark make in the snow that had settled on one our mats but it soon melted so we moved on to mark making on the tables. Some of us made snowballs by sculpting the snow by pressing and moulding it together and practised our throwing skills by carefully throwing them onto the grass away from others. We explored our footprints and watched as we caught it on our clothes and in our hair! We had lots of fun! In EYFS we have had a competition to decorate a potato as a book character. Each child was sent home with a potato and they had to choose their favourite book, discuss the characters, choose their favourite character from the book and describe what they look like, and finally dress their potato including as much decoration as possible!
We had an amazing response in Team EO and it was clear to see that the children and their families had worked really hard together! Thank you for all your fantastic efforts! Here are some of our brilliant creations! Well done to our two winners P and J! Can you guess the books and the characters? We started the week listening to the story ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell – we recapped about that an author is the person who wrote the book. We explored lots of different wild animals and talked about why these animals wouldn’t make good pets! We have written our own ‘Dear Zoo’ book! Each child worked hard to use there Fred Fingers to write the name of the animal they had chosen and what was wrong with it! Our funky finger activity was to colour in the spiral snake before using our carefully cutting skills to cut along the dashed lines! We have been turn-taking and practising our counting skills in our ‘Visit the Zoo’ board game. All Reception children have played a caterpillar track game with Miss Overton focusing on comparison. In Literacy, Year 1’s have practised joining sentences together using the conjunction ‘and’. We have been practising saying the days of the week in order, learning to read the days of the week and trying hard to spell them independently! We have been practising using the suffix ‘ed’ in our sentences before we complete our assessed write next week! In Maths, Reception have continued to focus on composition of number, particularly Number 7. Children used 2 different coloured multi-link cubes to make the number 7 and we discussed how many of each colour they had used. We have used our fingers to describe 7 as ‘5 and 2 more’ and we have begun to explain our understanding of the composition of 7. Can your child remember the different numbers 7 can be composed from? Year 1’s started the week systematically partitioning the numbers 6-10. We have solved missing part problems in the range from six to ten using part-whole models and we have used the + symbol to write expressions – we have learnt about the commutative law! In History, we begun to explore the significant individual William the Conqueror and the significant event in national linked to him. We wrote questions about what we would like to find out. In Computing, Year 1’s have worked in groups to combine ‘forwards’ and ‘backwards’ commands to make a sequence to programme the Bee-bots. They had to think carefully about which buttons to press on the Bee-bots and we had to remember to press 'clear' after it had completed our command before inputting another command. We hd lots of fun
Wow! What a fantastic day we have had celebrating World Book Day! Children were invited to come to school dressed as a book character and to bring their favourite book with them! Team EO staff absolutely loved seeing the children's amazing costumes. At circle time we shared who we had come to school dressed as and we told our friends a little bit about our character! Here are some of our comments: J "I'm Zog and he breathes fire out". G "I'm Venom and he's Spiderman's enemy". J "I'm Harry Potter and he casts spells". O "I'm the Cat in the Hat and he does tricks". H "I came as Black Panther and he fights monsters". E "I'm Elsa and she's magical". Children had lots of fun engaging in World Book Day activities in provision such as making bookmarks and completing book scavenger hunts. Some children to choose to draw a picture of themselves in their costume and they have used their Fred Fingers to write who they dressed up with and why they chose that character! We were super proud to show off our work! Reading Buddies!
This morning we were very lucky to have the children from Team DB come and join us in Team EO and they read us lots of books - some that we had brought in from home and some from our class reading area! A massive thank you to Team DB for coming and reading to us. What an amazing and busy first week back we have had! Our theme this week was 'pets'. We started the week listening carefully to the story ‘Tabby McTat’ by Julia Donaldson. We explored what animals we could own as pets such as cats, dogs, rabbits, lizard, tortoise, horse, guinea pig, hamster, snake, fish and chickens! We discussed what we need to do to care for a pet and concluded that pets need a loving home, a space safe to live, water and appropriate food – we spoke about how certain foods can make animals poorly.
A group of us worked with Mrs Stevens to make play-dough. We carefully measured out the ingredients and practised our turn-taking! In provision, children have had the opportunity to draw a picture about a pet they have at home and we have been writing sentences about our pets! If we don’t have a pet at home, we have been writing about what pet we would like. Children have been completing graphs to show what their friends favourite pet is out of a dog, cat, rabbit, fish and bird! Can your child tell you what their friends favourite pet was? Some Reception children worked as a team to order the Numicon pieces 1-10 - discussing what one more than their current number was - it was so lovely to see the children choosing to practise what we have been covering in our Maths lessons. We have been practising our carefully colouring and cutting to make our own split pin pets and we have been using the 'How to Draw' sheets to develop our drawing skills! In Literacy, Year 1’s text driver for this half-term is “Where the Wild Things Are”. We started the week listening carefully to the story and answering questions about it. Children have moved onto the ‘acquire’ stage of our unit where we are learning about adding the suffix ‘ed’ to given words and using these words in sentences. In Maths, Reception children have focused on ordering numbers to 8 and using the stem sentence ‘X is more than___”. We have used the 5 and a bit structure to represent 8 as 5 and 3 more and we have used the NumberBlocks episode ‘Peekaboo’ to help us reason about which numbers are ‘more than’ and ‘less than’ others. Year 1 children have explored partitioning numbers 6 to 10 using the part-whole model representations and have begun work on systematically partitioning numbers 6 to 10. In Science, we have begun to describe materials using key property vocabulary - hard/soft, stretchy/stiff, shiny/dull, rough/smooth, bendy/rigid, waterproof/not waterproof, absorbent/not absorbent and opaque/transparent. Team EO had lots of fun dressing up as their chosen inspirational figure and sharing lots of interesting facts about them!
Some of our inspirational figures included Florence Nightingale, Edith Cavell, Geoff Hurst, Dr Alex Fleming, Neil Armstrong, Cleo Patra, Pablo Picasso, Pele and Anne Frank! We awarded two certificates, one for the best and most accurate costume, and one for the person who was most interesting to learn about and had the most interesting facts, well done to Cleo Patra and Dr Alex Fleming! Here are some of our inspirational figures and our interesting facts! Welcome back to the second half of the Spring term in Team EO. We hope you all had a lovely holiday and are ready for an exciting and busy half-term ahead!
This half-term our topic focus is 'Amazing Animals'! We will be exploring different types of animals and their habitats and we will also be discussing the needs of the animals. Our core book for this half-term is "The Tale of the Naughty Little Rabbit". Team EO have had a wonderful day to end learning on our 'Magical Storyland' topic. We had lots of book fun and there was lots of talk about reading and relaxing!
Children were invited to wear their pyjamas to school and bring a bedtime book - some children also brought in their teddy bears! We enjoyed listening to stories from various member of staff including Miss McGinnes, Miss Crookes and Miss Hodgson. Miss McGinnes read 'Tiddler', Miss Crookes read 'The Worrysaurus' and Miss Hodgson read 'Stickman'. Miss Overton shared various books with the children including 'The Night Pirates' and 'Beware of the Bears'. To start our afternoon, the children participated in yoga, we spoke about how this was good for our mental health and how it helped us to relax. We then created a bedtime atmosphere by turning the lights off and shutting the blinds before snuggling up on the carpet to share our books from home with our friends. We enjoyed listening to adults read with a hot chocolate and biscuit! Our story of the week was ‘Cinderella’. We carefully thought about the characteristics of a fairy tale – we know that it has a good character, a bad character, some magic and a happy ending! We then thought about what we would wish for if we had a fairy Godmother and one of our activities in the writing area this week has been to write our wishes in a thought bubble. Children have also had the opportunity to write their own invitations for a party and have been giving them out to their friends. Our provision maths activity has been to read the numeral on the wand and put the correct number of beads on the wand. In the creative area we have had the opportunity to create our own wands and shields. In the construction area we had ‘fairy tale themed copy the building brick model’ challenge cards and we have had some amazing models built! After we have been our models we have been making labels and captions to tell others what our models are.
This week was Children’s Mental Health week – this years’ theme was ‘Let’s Connect’. We started off by discussing what mental health is. We learn that it is all about how we are feeling, the thoughts we are having, how this affects the choices we make and how we behave. It is also how we are able to cope with what is happening in our daily lives. We then moved onto explore connections and discussed with our friends who we had connections (relationships) with. Children were able to identify that they have connections with parents, grandparents, siblings and friends! We spoke about how these connections make us feel. We then made a class paperchain that is going to be joined to every other classes to show our connection as a school! In Maths, Reception children have focused on counting, ordinality and cardinality. We have verbally been counting to 30 placing emphasis on “1’s” past 20. While working with numbers to 10 we have continued to develop our understanding of the ordinal aspect by consolidating our understanding that each number has a value of ‘1 more’ than the previous number. Year 1 children have been consolidating their learning on the positioning of numbers to 10 and estimating where they lie on a number line. They have learnt what odd and even numbers are and the difference between them and we have learnt that an even number can be partitioned into either 2 even number or 2 odd numbers and that an odd number can only be partitioned an odd and even number. In Literacy, Year 1’s have worked hard to produce a description of the top of the beanstalk! Children worked hard to orally compose and hold their sentence, use capital letters, finger spaces and full stop and use the conjunction ‘and’ within their work. On Thursday, linking to our History learning and fairy tale themed week, we learnt what ‘armour’ is. We know that armour is a special suit made from metal that knights wear to protect themselves and that it is very heavy! We learnt the names of the following parts – helmet, throat guard, shoulder guard, breast plate, chainmail, guantlets, cuisses, leg plates, sword and shield. This inspired some of us to create our own shields and swords! |
