This week our learning has linked to ‘Sound and Hearing’ and Road Safety ahead of the National Road Safety next week. Our story this week was ‘Peace at Last’.
In the writing area, children have had the opportunity to write lists of sounds that they can hear whilst in our class and EYFS playground and they have also had the opportunity to show others how to keep safe by writing instructions. In the creative area, children have had the opportunity to make rain sticks. In the painting area, children have used forks to print to make fork bears – they look amazing! Our funky finger activity was to use the pipettes to carefully drop water into the holes on top of the bricks.

Today as part of our 'We Love Words Day' children were invited to come to school wearing a word. Children came to school wearing a word and dressed to show the meaning - we had some very imaginative costumes in Team EO!
Our words included: happy, splat, sport, festive, cosy. police, football, strong, rainbow and fluffy. For our Incredible Us! time today, we all played a listening game. Children took turns to sit on the chair in the middle of our circle, under the chair Miss Overton place some keys and the person in the middle of the circle had to close their eyes whilst one of their friends carefully took the keys without making too much noise! The child in the middle had to carefully listen to see if they could work out who had taken the keys!!
We had so much fun playing this game as a team, so much so that we have asked Miss Overton to play it again! As we went on our weekly Welly Walk, the children put into practise their Road Safety learning on how to cross a road safely. Children stopped, looked, listened and thought whether it was safe to cross or not. The adults were super impressed with how the children crossed the road this week,
Once in our Nature Reserve, children used the fallen leaves to make Autumnal pictures. Children made pictures of butterflies, birds and hedgehogs to name a few! This week our focus is on 'Sound and Hearing', as part of this we have started our learning on 'Road Safety'. We have learnt Super Cat's Rap to help us cross roads safely. We know there are 4 steps to keep us safe:
1. Stop - at the side of the road 2. Look - both ways 3. Listen - for cars and other vehicles 4. Think - is it safe to cross? Ask your child to see if they can remember the actions we learnt to help us remember these steps. Reception children have been consolidating previous learning on ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ and have been introduced to the concept of ‘equal’.
This week we have been learning all about Diwali. We listened carefully to the story of Rama and Sita and were able to join in with key parts of story by using actions that we had learnt at our Diwali Dance Workshop from before the holidays and we learnt how Hindu’s celebrate Diwali.
Team EO had a food tasting session where we tried 5 different types of food that Hindu’s may eat to celebrate Diwali. We tried: garlic chicken, naan bread, poppadum’s with mango chutney and pilau rice. The children discussed what the food was like as they tried and compared them to foods they were more familiar with! The children have had the opportunity to print Rangoli patterns in the painting area, make Diva lamps in the creative area and to colour and write Diwali cards to send to friends. Our funky finger activity this week was to use the wooden end of a paint brush to make patterns in the glitter! We have also learnt about Bonfire Night – how it came about and how it is celebrated. Children had the opportunity to create firework pictures and write "I can see" sentences about what they see on Bonfire Night. We also spoke about to stay safe when watching fireworks and holding sparklers. In Literacy, Year 1 have been writing instructional sentences through ‘hold a sentence’, some children have had a go at composing their own sentence.
In Maths, Year 1’s have worked really hard to place numbers on a number line – they have enjoyed playing a game of ‘fastest fingers’ to find numbers on the 100-square. In Geography, we have had a discussion on extreme types of weather and how they impact on the lives of people. In Science, we have learnt about how the weather, trees and what we wear in change in Winter. Welcome back! I hope you have had a fantastic relaxing holiday and you are feeling rested and recharged for a busy Autumn 2!
Our theme for this half-term is 'Sparkle and Shine' all our learning activities will be linked to colour, light and celebrations. Our core book for this haf-term is 'Zog' by Julia Donaldson. This book has a very repetitive structure which will help us learn to read the book ourselves as we read and re-read it. Zog has lots of rhyming words within the story, as we become more familiar with the story we will begin to listen and pick out the rhyming words. The language is exciting and is helping to extend our vocabulary. This book is about a brightly coloured dragon which links with our theme this half term ‘Sparkle and Shine’. On Thursday afternoon, we discussed the celebration 'Diwali' and learnt that it is the festival of light. We listened carefully to how Diwali is celebrated and we will be continuing learning about Diwali in the first week back after half-term.
We then took part in the Diwali Dance Workshop – we listened carefully to the story of Rama and Sita, joined in with actions to the story and then enjoyed putting these actions together to create a short dance routine! |
