In Literacy, Year 1 children have learnt that the prefix ‘un’ changes a word into it’s opposite. We have tried hard to use the prefix ‘un’ in a sentence and we have been writing sentences to describe Snow White and the Reporter from Snow White in New York. We continue to work hard to ensure our sentences start with capital letters, have finger spaces throughout and full stops at the end!
Year 1 children have begun work on their Geometry unit we have been composing pattern block images (looking at what smaller shapes we can see inside shapes) and continuing and developing patterns!

Our story of the week this week was ‘The Gingerbread Man’. In the writing area children have been taking on the roles of the characters from the story and writing thought bubbles for what they would be thinking if they were that character - we have had some super writing! In the maths area, we have been consolidating our subitising skills – we have had to choose a gingerbread man with a dot arrangement on, say what number it is and then feed the gingerbread man to the fox! Children have had the opportunity to draw around a friend to make a big gingerbread man and label the body parts. Children have been using creative materials to create their own gingerbread man. In our funky finger area, we have been using tweezers to place loose parts on the gingerbread man to add the features! Most excitingly of all, we have baked our own gingerbread man!!
Reception children are working hard to write initial sounds in words and some children are developing confidence in writing simple words! Can you encourage your child to label the pictures they draw at home? They could write the initial sound in the word or use their Fred Fingers to sound the whole word out!
In Maths, Reception children have been learning about the composition of 5. We have used the song “5 Little Speckled Frogs” to support our learning. Can your child use the stem sentence ‘5 is made from…’ to tell you the different ways we can make 5? Today the Reception children were really lucky to have a visit from Reverend John Armstrong and the Lay Minister Stephanie Peake from St Mary's Church in Wombwell.
Many of the children had never met a vicar before and were interested to learn about his role in church. He began by explaining what can happen at church, which includes baptisms, weddings, funerals and Sunday services. He told us about other things that happen at church including a food bank and special groups for children. Stephanie then explained her role and said that she looked after children at church including toddler groups and after school groups. Stephanie also said she is a Lay Reader to help run church services. Both told us that people who attend church services believe that God loves us and wants to be part of our lives. They showed us what they wear for services including a cassock, surplice and prayer scarf. Stephanie also showed us what she wears for her children's groups and read the words on the back and told us what they meant; "engaging, nurturing, disciplining." The children were keen to ask lots of questions including "Why do you wear special clothes?" "What do you do at church?" "What food do you eat at church?" and "Is Jesus real?" These opened up very interesting discussions from our visitors, and the children are looking forward to them returning in a few weeks to learn more! In Science, we began work on our new topic ‘Everyday Materials’ – we learnt the names of different materials and we were distinguishing between the object and the material it is made from.
This week has been ‘Mindfulness Week’ in school. We learnt that practising mindfulness can help us feel good about ourselves. We have used the Mindfulness Monsters to give a focus to our mindfulness sessions. On Tuesday, we were ‘positive’ with Giggles, we learnt what a compliment was and then gave compliment to the friend sat next to us in the circle. On Wednesday, we practised concentration with Thinky – we started by counting how many teeth we have with our tongue. We then learnt that we have the super power of smiling – we passed a smile around our circle and spoke about it made us feel good inside. On Thursday, we practised creativity with Sparky. We started by sitting with our eyes closed listening to a piece of music and took our pencils for a ‘walk’. We then opened our eyes and used colouring pencils to colour in between the lines we had created whilst taking our pencil for a 'walk'.
Team EO staff hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year, we would like to say a huge welcome back to everyone, it has been wonderful to see you all back this week, happy and eager to learn!
This half-term our topic focus is ‘Magical Storyland’ where we will explore a variety of traditional tales and fairy tales – we will look at the characteristics of these tales and alternative versions. Our core book for this half-term is ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. This weeks’ story has been ‘The Three Little Pigs’. Children have enjoyed using puppets to retell the story in our small world area, we have been writing speech bubbles to show what the 3 Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf say and children have been putting their creative skills to the test to create a model of one of the houses from the story with a focus on adding detail to ensure our houses look like a house! Our funky finger activity this week has focused on scissor skills – we have been cutting out clothing and sticking them onto the pigs! This week our learning has focused around the book ‘Night Monkey Day Monkey’ by Julia Donaldson and our activities have been based around light and dark, opposites and jungle animals!
In the writing area we have had the opportunity to use our Fred Fingers to write ‘I can see…’ sentences about what we can see in the day and at night. In the maths area, we have had the opportunity to make the Numberblocks up to Number 7 using the unifix cubes. Our Year 1’s in provision have been consolidating counting a set of objects and writing the numeral. In the creative area, we were tasked with making a jungle animal out of our junk modelling resources! In the painting area, we have been painting our hands to print them onto the paper and adding detail to our handprints to make handprint monkeys! For our funky finger activity this week we had to use tweezers to balance pom poms on top of the golf tees which were stuck in play dough! On Thursday, our class Elf, Buddy arrived! We can’t wait to see what mischief he gets up to each day in the countdown to Christmas! This week our learning activities have been focused around rainbows and we have linked this learning to the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. We have enjoyed singing ‘The animals went in 2 by 2’ and we have been learning the Makaton signs for colours by singing and signing ‘I can sing a rainbow’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLpEGM34Fic).
This week, in the painting area, children have opportunity to do bubble paintings. The children mixed powder paints into bubble mixture and used pipe cleaners as bubble wands to blow bubbles onto paper. It was lots of fun! In the creative area, we have been scrunching up the different coloured tissue papers to make our own rainbow – they have looked fantastic! In the funky finger area, we have been using the peg boards to make our own patterns. We have had the opportunity to retell the story of Noah’s Ark using the small world resources. We have also enjoyed using the 'how to draw' sheets to begin to learn different types of objects and animals! We have some future artists in Team EO! Team EO have also been working hard to learn all the songs for our Nativity performance – we cannot wait to share it with you! |
