Teams CW and Team EO are delighted to see how much our grass caterpillars had grown over the half term holiday. All 62 caterpillars are now competition ready and have been photographed for our entry to the National Children's gardening competition.
Over the next few weeks, we are supporting our school catering team with the ‘Big Grow initiative’. This starts on the 9th May and runs until the 20th May. Throughout the fortnight, they will serve a different guest salad bar dish each day.
There will also be some virtual events for classes to participate in as well the opportunity for classes to plant seed and grow salad ingredients. Mental Health Awareness WeekMental Health Awareness Week is happening between 9 to 15 May 2022. The official theme is ‘loneliness’ and, across the week, we encourage you to build meaningful connections with your friends, family, colleagues and communities.
In school we have had a whole school assembly on the theme and are continuing the theme of thinking about loneliness and the feelings associated with it over the coming weeks. The youngest children in school have listened to stories with a theme of loneliness and talked about what they can do at playtime if they see someone on their own or someone looking sad. In Year 6 we have been engaging in many challenges and activities over the year with a focus on.
Keeping ourselves safe. Respecting the beliefs and attitudes of others Recognising the importance of empathy and caring and respecting the feelings of others During Interfaith week each class was asked to think of a meaningful act of kindness. 'Being kind and helpful' is one of out school Golden rules and we know that the children at Park Street really do demonstrate their kindness on a daily basis, but it is also important to spend time to think about the act of kindness and what we can do that might have an impact on others beyond our school. Team CW created salt dough heart decorations for Valentine's day and sold them for £1 or a donation. As a class they decided that they wanted to help children and so it was decided that money raised should go to the Tiny Hearts Appeal at Barnsley Hospital and the Bluebell Wood Children's hospice. So far the children have raised over £50 and will continue to find out about the good work that these charities do for children and to keep thinking of ways they can raise money for these causes. Team CB have also been thinking about others and decided to do an act of kindness for residents at Wombwell Care Home by baking them rabbit shaped biscuits.
Team CH decided to write letters to the residents of Parkside Care home to help cheer them after two years of isolation. During Anti- bullying week Team DB discussed how how kind words make us feel.
Teams LL and AF n team AF looked at cyber bullying and hate crime on the back of our learning at Crucial Crew. Team CW Did a circle time about time about times we have needed help and what someone has done to help us. They talked about who can help us in school and made Pudsey bear ears to wear when going to do an act of kindness to someone else in school.. They also practised giving out lots of compliments to people and celebrating our differences.
Team LL and AF had a brilliant day at Crucial Crew. Representatives from the emergency services and other services worked with the children to cover a range of really interesting topics and areas to help children learn about their responsibilities, the law and how to keep themselves safe. A really valuable day of learning. Topics covered.
- The danger of hoax calls - Importance of fire safety - Danger of arson - What a magistrate court is like and what children over 10 need to know when they reach 10 - The importance of road safety - The dangers of child criminal exploitation - The danger of knife and hate crimes |
