In Nursery, our core book this half term has been Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy. We have loved reading and re-reading this book and we are now really good at joining in with lots of the phrases, especially the rhyming words. In our reading area, we have been learning to turn the pages carefully one at a time, going the right way from front to back. At group time, we have focused on developing our listening skills by tuning into sounds. We have learnt lots of nursery rhymes and have been singing these and playing our musical instruments. These are all essential pre-reading skills which will really help us when we start to learn letters and blend sounds into words.

Today marks a very special day in our calendar as it is National Poetry Day. Across school, all our children will be taking part in learning linked to poetry, right from Nursery working on Nursery Rhymes to Year 6 recreating Jabberwocky on the Green Screen! We have so many wonderful activities planned, which include both reading and writing poetry. Teachers will enjoy sharing some of their favourite poems before our children get hands on creating their own wonderful writing, Our writing will take all forms, with some of our children heading outdoors to gather ideas practically as their stimulus for writing. We can't wait to see this wonderful work throughout school in the coming weeks!
We are very excited that next week will be book week in school. All classes will be engaging in lots of reading based activities to support a love of reading and an appreciation of different literature. On Thursday 4th March, for World Book Day, all children are invited to dress up as a book character of their choice. Children learning at home are encouraged to join in and dress up for their zoom call or send in photos. We cannot wait to see all your fantastic costumes! Throughout the week the staff will also be sharing their favourite stories with you via video so look out for these. Here is the letter which has been sent home with all the information you will need about the week: ![]()
It has been a very busy half term and the children in Reception and Key Stage One have once again made super progress in their reading through the Read Write Inc program.
The children in Key Stage One have been bringing home their Read Write Inc book back books over the last few weeks and I hope they have been able to show you how amazing they are! Please remember to encourage your child to read their book over a number of days. This will help them to develop their fluency and use of a story tellers voice as well as build their confidence. The children should be able to sound out every word in the book using their phonics knowledge but the more they read it, the less they will need to sound out and the more fluent they will become! If you have any questions or need any support with your child's reading, please speak to your child's class teacher who will be happy to help. Tomorrow marks National Poetry Day across the country. Schools around the UK will be celebrating some of literature's finest poems and the theme for this year is vision. With so many different forms of poetry including couplets, tongue twisters, shape poems, calligrams, acrostic, riddles, limericks, haiku, kennings and odes - we are taking on the challenge of exploring some of these text types further. The aim is for each class throughout school to create a poem linked with this year's theme, but covering a range of styles. We can't wait to share these with you and hope to have a display of some of our favourites very shortly!
If you want to get involved in this year's poetry day, why not challenge your family to a poetry battle? Perhaps you could have a theme of something linked to home? Good luck! With all of our students having settled well into the new academic year, it has been lovely to see and hear of all the fantastic progress they are making towards their phonics, reading, writing and SPAG objectives. That said, we are always looking for ways in which we can further support our students and parents/carers. Attached below are a list of useful websites we have compiled which we feel may benefit children in either securing, refining or consolidating some of the Literacy learning they encounter within the classroom. We hope you find this to be a useful tool and one which encourages, motivates and engages those young minds! ![]()
Yesterday marked an important day in the calendar for Roald Dahl enthusiasts as it was Roald Dahl Day. This day is celebrated annually on 13th September to raise the profile of the fantastic work that Roald Dahl contributed to encouraging young readers. In school, we have made sure to celebrate his valued contribution through discovering more about his famous works. Classes have been tasked with investigating one of his well known books and engaging in a lesson linked to their chosen text. Some children have been busy designing and making a tortoise linked to Esio Trot with knowledge of ratio and proportion, others have been creating their own perilous potion recipes linked to George's Marvellous Medicine. We have even had children creating their own characters who's personality does not match their appearance, much like in the case of The BFG. All in all, it has been an excellent opportunity for our students to learn more about the fantastic works that Roald Dahl produced and further their understanding of why he still remains such an influential children's author!
Yesterday marked National Read a Book Day across the country. With this falling on the weekend, we decided to celebrate the event in school today. Across the school, children have made time in the day to enjoy the simple pleasures of some of their favourite books. From fact to fiction, humour to horror, our children have loved spending time reading some of their favourite genres and getting reacquainted with some of the classics as well as exploring our new content!
Keep up the brilliant work Team Park Street! We would like to begin by wishing you the warmest of welcomes back to Park Street following the annual Summer holidays. We hope you have all managed a restful and well earned break and can't wait to get back to seeing all your friendly faces each day!
As with any new school year, we are looking forward to documenting all the fantastic Literacy learning that has been taking place across our school. From reading to writing, phonics to SPAG, we can't wait to show you all the brilliant learning journey we are about to embark on. Make sure you check back on here for regular updates about what is happening across the English curriculum as well as exciting ways we will aim to mark some of our Theme Days. We are so eager to share the wonderful work we will craft over the coming months! With the Summer holidays just around the corner, we would like to take this opportunity to thank both our parents/carers and our pupils for their continued support this year. We are so appreciative of all the hard work our learners have put in to working from home, as well as the help they have had in achieving this from those at home with them. We certainly would love nothing more than to give them a huge pat on the back and are truly looking forward to welcoming each face back in September.
Some resources will remain available to children in to the holidays that we have previously blogged about such as Ruth Miskin's Read Write Inc. We hope you will continue to find these useful and hope that you all have a restful, relaxing and well earned break over the summer. See you in September! |
