If you did not know, at Park Street we pride ourselves on the pupil voice we give to our children. Hosting the Junior Reader Leader meetings is one of the greatest privileges as our children are passionate and dedicated in their roles.
What has been lovely to see over the last few weeks, is the ferocity with which our Junior Reader Leaders have attacked their new role as mentors to other children through school. Their coaching sessions have paid off tremendously, with staff through school commenting on how lovely it has been to hear our Junior Reading Leaders reading with accurate use of MTYT and Fred Talk to support our early phonics readers. The Junior Reader Leaders have also provided great feedback around loving this role. They are taking ownership, pushing progress and providing fantastic peer support. I could not be more proud of their achievements. Well done JRLs you are making Park Street so proud!

Parents/carers/children of Park Street - keep your eyes peeled over the next week as an exciting email should be arriving with a new event planned to celebrate our love of Reading and Writing. This is a new celebration on the Park Street calendar and staff are already excited to see the wonderful response to our new challenge!
Today marks National Poetry Day across the country. In school, we have been busy celebrating the special day in lots of ways. Miss Baxter and Mrs Lawson have been busy holding assemblies with our Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classes to share the day and enjoy a poem or two together. Children have also been busy knocking down the door of Team CB to come and read a poem with adults when they have had a spare second. It has been lovely to hear the children read with such confidence and expression.
We are also holding a Poetry competition within school, tied in to the theme for this year "the environment" by asking our children to create a poem about Autumn. This will be judged by our Arts Council, and already some of the entries we have received have been to an exceptionally high standard - judging will definitely be challenging! In Literacy, all classes in Key Stage 1 and 2 have been working hard on creating their own poems. Each class has has a different poetry focus, with Year 2 doing shape poems, Year 3 doing rhyme poems and so on. The children are very proud of these and can't wait to share them with wider school later in the term! What a delightful start to the week it has been through school as our Junior Reader Leaders have got underway with their new roles and responsibilities. After some essential training with Miss Baxter, our Junior Reader Leaders from Year 4 to 6 have been buzzing about the school corridors helping our younger readers to develop their reading skills. The corridors were filled with children reading to each other, plenty of use of my turn, your turn strategies and a general sense of sheer LOVE of reading. Some of our children have had stories read to them, while some work hard to develop their accuracy and fluency. It is simply wonderful to watch. Our Junior Reader Leader team are doing a tremendous job and we are certain you will share in celebrating their fantastic success!
From 27.09.22 our Reading Together sessions will be resuming. This is something that parents of Park Street have always enjoyed as well as our young readers, and so we are very excited to get the first sessions of the year underway. Be sure to pop back soon to see how we all enjoyed this lovely time together!
Home Readers have now been dispensed to all children throughout school. This may comprise of phonics books, books linked to your child's current stage of development and also an age appropriate text which can be enjoyed independently or modelled by parents/carers a home. Please can we remind all parents and children that books should be returned daily to ensure that these amazing resources can be read regularly through the school day, redistributed to other children once they have been read, and used to further enrich children's learning. We thank you sincerely for your co-operation as always!
Junior Reader Leaders have now been selected through school for this academic year. Earlier in the week we held our first fortnightly meeting to carry out introductions and set the agenda over the coming year. This year, our Junior Reader Leaders will be working harder than ever, supporting our younger readers, carrying out timetabled events daily to drive and support reading through school, as well as offering new and exciting ideas for how we can further enrich reading here at Park Street. Be sure to check out our Junior Reader Leader page where the minutes of our meetings can be found.
Did you know that today marks Roald Dahl's birthday - he would have been 106! Through school we have been celebrating this special event in different ways. In some classes, children have been creating their own stories based on the style of Roald Dahl, in other classes they have been creating a biography of who Roald Dahl was and what he achieved in his life. In our assembly, we read some of Roald Dahl's work to appreciate his brilliant mind! Whatever way you have spent the day, we are sure you will appreciate that the world of children's literature would look very different without the classics Roald Dahl created, often in his shed at home!
Welcome back to all our lovely students, parents and visitors. We hope you have had a restful Summer. Whilst staff have also enjoyed Summer, since arriving back to school our foot is firmly back on the pedal of supporting all of our students in becoming independent and successful readers. Reading starts from Day 1 in Park Street and Read Write Inc is already in full swing throughout school. Our children are working hard to learn new sounds in EYFS and Key Stage 1. In Key Stage 2, children are working hard on their texts to develop accuracy, fluency and comprehension skills to further support their reading. We can't wait to share the exciting things we have planned this year for reading!
What an absolutely AMAZING day it has been through school today to celebrate World Book Day. The school has had such a buzz of excitment all day as we have engaged in lots of exciting tasks to mark the special occasion!
It all began at the beginning of the week with books being hidden around school for children to find and keep. The children have loved hunting for books and this has created a real aura of excitement. The children were then invited to mark the day by dressing as their favourite book characters. It was lovely to see so many fantastic outfits; from Alice in Wonderland, to Romans and even Willy Wonka! In the morning we spent time discussing what World Book Day is and why we celebrate it. As classes, we then reflected on books that meant the world to us. We created our own "Writes of Passages" which explained why our books were so important. These were lovely to read and will make a beautiful display in our library area in the coming weeks. Children from Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 were given the task of creating their own Supervillain this year. Each class had to create and describe their own villain and ensure he committed a terrible crime against books. The outcomes of these were fabulous, for example, Sammy Slick the International Word Scrambler was a villain I certainly didn't want to come into contact with! Children also linked their Maths and SPAG knowledge to World Book Day to escape the Library. Using their Maths and SPAG skills, children had to solve clues to reveal the combination code to escape the library. I certainly heard Team JD screaming at the fact they were locked in! Luckily, they all escaped by the end of the day! In addition to this, all class teachers were asked to fetch in an object from home. Then, starting in Year 1, Mr Holmes and his class had to use their object to write the beginning of a story. This was emailed to the next class who used their object to add on additional sections of the story and so on. The outcome of the whole school story was simply hilarious. The title could not sum up the outcome any better - The most random, unpredictable story of the year! It has been a truly fantastic day and the children have loved marking the occasion! We are already busy planning for next year's fun! |
