In nursery we have been Scientists as we explored gloop in our investigation tray. Firstly we mixed the cornflour and water together and talked about the texture. As we played with it we noticed that it changed consistency in our hands! The children used some great words such as hard, sticky, wet, slimy, runny and soft to describe it.
Team JF started the year exploring and investigating light. They initially identified a variety of light sources establishing natural and man made examples. From this, the children researched the best reflective materials to keep them safe in the outdoors and tested a range of materials to recognise transparent, translucent and opaque items.
The children's learning concluded with a series of investigations involving the formation and variation of shadows. So far, in team AC we have been learning about materials.
Our learning has included: Recognising and naming the different types of common materials such has glass, wood, plastic and metal. We designed rockets to link with a literacy unit we did on the story ‘a spaceship’. We had to label the materials we would use. Identifying the properties of materials and learning vocabulary such as man-made, natural, transparent, flexible and waterproof to describe them. Testing the properties of materials to see which as best suited to their job. Mrs Crossfield wanted us to test her coats to see which one was the best to take with her on a wet weekend away to the seaside. She let us squirt her with the water pistol to test if her coats were waterproof! We also tested the cups that our teachers have their coffees in to see which cup kept the coffee the warmest for the longest (the best insulator). We used a thermometer and a timer to take readings after every five minutes to see how warm the water was inside the cups. Identifying which materials are best suited to different jobs and why some would be no good to do a certain job. We are currently looking at the Great fire of London. We are discussing why the materials the houses were made from caused them to burn so easily. We have completed practical activities, watched videos and clips, worked alone and in teams and even used the ICT suite to carry out our learning. |
