Team CH have been thinking like investigators and asking questions about the materials in their boxes.

At the end of Autumn term, Team JF took part in a seasonal walk in Wombwell. The children were incredibly observant whilst being very sensible and safe. As we set off from the school grounds, we started to look at the changes to our environment during this season. We stopped at regular intervals to discuss what we could see and why these changes were occurring. As we arrived at our destination (a large open field space) we split off into small groups to explore the surroundings and hopefully tick off some of the autumnal changes. I was so proud of the way the children conducted themselves and how engaged they were in their learning. When we arrived back at school, we looked closer and some of the findings we brought back and discussed these. We then proceeded to complete our investigation pro forma as a class to present our findings.
Children have thoroughly enjoyed finding out all about the circulatory system and the function of our heart, lungs and blood vessels. We have also been finding out about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
PROBLEM SOLVING - is this terms scientific enquiry focus and Year 6 became detectives trying to get to the bottom of what exactly had happened at the hedgehog crime scence. Applying lots of problem solving skills, asking what if.. questions and using evidence to make predictions and draw conclusions. This half term our science enquiry focus has been to use secondary sources to research. We applied our research skills by looking at a range of books, articles, leaflets and websites to research nutrition, food groups and why our bodies need a balanced diet. The knowledge we gathered has supported our learning in science, PSCHE and PE.
Children worked in groups to investigate the question…’Is there a link between your outstretched arms and your height?’
Children had to decide how they would carry out the investigation, how to measure and how to record. Pupils then looked for patterns in their data. We felt that the data from just a few children wasn’t enough to look in detail at patterns so we collated the data for the full class. Children drew conclusions and identified anomalous data which may have been down to inaccuracies in measurement so children rechecked. After this children suggested their own investigations for pattern seeking. LO: Generate electrical circuit investigation questions.
TASK: Experiment with making a range of circuits using bulbs, wires, motors, buzzers, cells/batteries and switches. Children worked in pairs and small groups to experiment with the circuit components they then discussed what they had discovered and generated their own enquiry questions here are some examples from the children in Year 6 This week Team CH have been talking about the weather. We discussed how different types of weather makes us feel; how we should dress for different weather types and, also observed the changes of weather throughout the day.
The children have been really busy this week, and have already made a start on their science learning. This half term we are focusing on States of Matter and the children participated in being a molecule, showing how they vibrate when in the state of a solid, a liquid or a gas.
Team AF and LL have started their science learning based on electricity and circuits. We have learnt about key figures and innovators in the field of electricity. We have also explored and found out about renewable and fossil fuels. We have also produced work around the importance of staying safe around electricity. We are now looking forward to the practical elements of investigating more complex circuits.
