Maths This week Team JF started a new unit of learning to explore position and movement. To begin with we discussed new mathematical vocabulary and the directions we move in. From this we focused on identifying our left and right and went outside to give our partner some instructions to follow! From this, we recapped the vocabulary we used the previous day and built upon it including in front, behind, above and below. We carried out a range of practical activities to deepen our understanding of this concept. Firstly, we used objects in the classroom with sentence stems to write about their positions. After that we had a challenge activity to build a tower from cubes using the instructions I gave. Finally, the children had to carry out the same activity again but with a partner to give their own instructions for each other using the extended vocabulary. Literacy This week we also started a new unit of learning. We decided as we had been learning all about seaside habitats in Science, we would write about what we could get up to if we went for a day there! To begin with, we read the book ‘A Day at the Seaside’ and discussed the adventures within that. From this, we unpicked the genre of this text and why these types of stories are written. Finally, we worked together as a team to think of many different things we would get up to if we went for a visit to the seaside. As the week progressed, we moved into our skill building and looked at speech within writing and expanded noun phrases to describe our characters and a beach setting.

Science-Design Technology Before half term Team JF began to plan and create a science based DT project based on our topic 'Life by the Seaside'. We decided that we were going to make a coastal shoe box habitat. First, we chose which habitat we were going to create, most of us chose a beach or a rockpool. Then, we drew a labelled plan of what our habitat was going to look like and what materials we were going to use. A week later after many of us brought in a cardboard box, it was time to create our coastal shoe box. The first thing we did was paint our boxes and added details like clouds, made of cotton wool and waves with white paint. Then once dry, we added sand, seaweed made from pipe cleaners, animals, rocks and other materials. This week we evaluated our habitats and reflected on what went well and what we could change if we were to do it again. Literacy Team JF have been introduced to our new literacy topic which is Poetry and animal riddles. Last week we began to become familiar with poetry as many of us had never seen or heard of it before. We read some poems out of a poem book and lots of us found them to be quite funny. Then we discussed that they will be writing their very own poem about an animal from the seaside. We have been working on our use of adjectives and commas before we start to write about our animal. |
