This week in maths Team JF have continued exploring numbers. We started the week by comparing objects identifying the greatest, smallest and equal amounts using the < > and = symbols. From this we moved into comparing numbers written in numerals and words. As the children demonstrated excellent understanding we moved our learning into identifying and writing numbers in ascending and descending order. The children have demonstrated excellent understanding of place value. Next week we will begin our new unit of addition and subtraction. Literacy This week in literacy the children were introduced to a new unit of learning, non fiction. This began with the children exploring a number of text types and identifying their purposes. After we established what non fiction texts were, we worked in groups to pick out their features. From this we decided to link our literacy with our geography topic and write our very own information sheet about Brazil. As a class we voted for the topics we wanted to write about and finished off the week by gathering research using the Ipads. Not only did the children have a fantastic attitude towards their learning they amazed me with their technical skills!

Literacy This week in literacy Team JF have been exploring writing from a different perspective. Throughout the week we took on the role of an alien from another dimension! From this, we imagined we had entered a classroom for the very first time and had seen some peculiar looking objects. After much discussion, we created a variety of word banks to inspire our descriptive writing about some of the objects we had seen. Team JF have amazed me with their creativity this week, what a great start to the year! Maths This week in maths Team JF have been exploring place value. We have been focusing on the value of each digit in a 3 or 4 digit number. To do this, we have had many practical sessions using the place value counters, base 10 and place value grids. The children have not only worked really hard to partition and represent numbers in a variety of ways but also explain their reasons behind this. We will continue to develop our understanding of place value next week. Literacy
This week in Team JF we have continued learning about poetry and the features of a poem. We have used the book Commotion in the Ocean as inspiration for our own pieces. During the week we have unpicked the features used and started to develop our own key words or phrases to use in our writing next week. The children had great fun choosing the sea creatures they would be using and thinking of rhyming words to go with them. The plans they have produced are fabulous and I look forward to reading the finished poems! Maths This week in Team JF we have been developing our knowledge of fractions. We initially focused on finding a fraction of a set of objects with practical resources, paired work and lots of discussion. From this, we moved into finding a fraction of a number using the practical skills previously used . This was a challenging task, however, the children demonstrated great resilience and a fantastic 'can do' attitude towards their learning. Literacy
What a busy week Team JF have had in literacy! Firstly, we planned our diary entries from the perspective of one of the Roman twins, Romulus and Remus. To do this effectively, we had to think about the thoughts and feelings of our chosen twin and ensure our writing was structured in chronological order. From this, we were able to write our first draft of the diary entry and further improve our writing with our purple editing pens. Finally, we published our amazing diary entries and presented them to each other. The children have made excellent progress this term in their writing and continue to amaze me with their attitudes and resilience towards their learning. Maths Our maths this week has been slightly different as Team JF have been exploring Roman numerals. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of using the rules of Roman numerals to make different numbers or converting our numbers into Roman numerals. As their confidence grew, the numbers began getting larger and the children were able to transfer those skills into adding them together. What a fun packed week Team JF have had!
History This week, year 3 took part in their history day with the theme of 'flight'. Throughout the day the children rotated around different activities to develop their knowledge of the Wright brothers, researching key questions such as;
Alongside this, the children had the privilege of two special guests to discuss their careers and how flight has evolved over time. This gave the children the opportunity to deepen their understanding and ask any burning questions they had! Finally, we finished off our day with the children experiencing what it would be like to fly a real aircraft. Mr Whittaker kindly allowed the children to sit inside a small aircraft he had designed and built which was amazing! Literacy As part of put exciting new unit of work, we had a very confusing visit from two people who appeared to be Romans. After much commotion, they left and we began exploring who they were from the clues they left. After much discussion, we discovered they were in fact Romulus and Remus. From this, we read the myth of Romulus and Remus and developed our understanding of what a myth is and why were they written? Throughout the week, we decided we needed to get to know Romulus and Remus a little better and worked in groups to act out scenes from the book and created word banks to describe the brothers. . In order to do this successfully we had to take on the role of different characters and use our inference skills to determine what they could have been thinking or feeling at that time. Maths In maths this week we have continued our learning around measurement. we have moved into converting lengths using m,cm and mm. The children have worked extremely hard on some challenging conversions and have shown great resilience by not giving up. from this, we moved into comparing and adding lengths with different units of measurement. Next week we will continue working with measurement but will move into subtracting lengths and measuring perimeter. Keep up the great work Team JF! Maths
In maths this week we have started our new unit of money! The children have really enjoyed exploring this unit. We started the week by consolidating our existing knowledge of different coin values and moved into converting from pence to pounds. From this, we proceeded with adding money using concrete and pictorial representations. Next week we will continue our learning around money practically progressing into giving change. Literacy This week in literacy we have been recapping the features of instructions. The children recalled what is required to write a clear set of instructions and had great fun going on a feature hunt around the classroom. We then linked our literacy with our art topic and moved into planning our own set of instructions on how to make a stone age pot. As the children made these without me our roles were reversed and they were teaching me something new! I look forward to beginning our writing next week. Maths
How has our first week ended already! This week in maths we have continued our learning around multiplication and division. As we are fabulous mathematicians we have been able to use the times tables facts we already know to solve much trickier calculations with numbers 10x as big! As always Team JF have worked really hard to explore and understand this concept and have demonstrated great resilience in working through the problems they were presented with. What a fantastic start to this term! Literacy Team JF's literacy this week has been really exciting! We have started our unit of adventure stories and have been using the book Supertato to unpick the structure and steal some ideas. We began working in groups to create our own checklist of what make a great adventure story and from this we started exploring these features. After a lot of discussion and many votes, we finally decided the plan for our own stories. We will begin our writing next week, however, I already know they are going to be amazing as the children generated an abundance of impressive ideas. This week has been Enterprise Week in school and I am incredibly proud of Team JF. The children produced some fantastic Christmas treats and they thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. Not only that, their products were a bit hit throughout the school.
Well done! Maths In maths we have continued our work around multiplication and division with a focus on the four times tables. The children have worked really hard not only to solve the calculations but also writing the inverse to them. From this, they were able to tackle some tricky word problems where they had to decide the correct calculation to use.. Once again, Team JF have blown me away with their determination and eagerness to learn. Literacy This week in literacy we have been exploring persuasive writing. We have looked at a range of persuasive techniques, their purposes and thought of our own examples. From this, we have decided to combine our literacy with our topic, of the Amazon rainforest, and will be writing persuasive letters to stop deforestation. The children have gathered lots of information and have developed a great argument against it. I look forward to starting our writing next week! Literacy .
Welcome back! Our focus this week in literacy has been an introduction to instructions. We initially explored different types of instructions and unpicked the features of them. From this, we worked in groups using the Ipad's to create our own instructional videos of how to make a paper hat. The children loved this activity and really got into character producing some fantastic videos! Next week, we will continue our work around instructions and will be transferring the skills we have learned into our writing. Maths We have spent this week finishing off our unit of addition and subtraction. The children have worked extremely hard tackling the formal method of column subtraction. As we moved into exchanging numbers they quickly grasped the need to take from a neighbour if they didn't have enough to complete the subtraction. The children's effort and determination has amazed me this week as I know this was challenging for them. Well done Team JF! |
