Maths: building on our work on mathematical structures we have been developing our calculation skills in addition and subtraction. We have been applying key vocabulary and ensuring we are setting out written methods accurately. We are now exploring a range of problems and establishing the most efficient methods of finding the answer.
Literacy: 'So What Do You Say?' After reading this chapter of our class novel Stormbreaker we are exploring points for and against Alex taking the mission to go under cover at Sayle Enterprises. Alex Rider has written to us asking for advice and we are planning to write a letter back providing him with some valuable advice. SCIENCE: We are now well on our way to learning about electricity ad circuits. To tie in with Park Street goes green we have explored the pros and cons of renewable energy and why it may be a better option for the environment. We deployed our oracy skills to debate our thoughts and opinions. We have recapped prior learning about electrical circuits revising key elements of a circuit and application of taught vocabulary. We are going to find out a little about famous scientists and the HISTORY of electricity before getting on to planning some circuit based investigations.
RE We are really exciting to begin learning about a brand new religion which he have not learnt about before - Buddhism. Children have carried out a little research and explored the life and teaching of the Buddha. We are looking forward to finding out even more. PE - We have been getting stuck into our Basketball unit - learning how to pass, dribble, attack and defend. We are working hard to improve our hoop shooting accuracy. MUSIC - We have been listening and appraising a range of musical styles and genres including soul, pop and rock. Our focus song at the moment is Do You Wanna. We have been learning about the term adagio and songs at a slow pace. We are developing our music notation skills further as we prepare to perform the piece on our recorders. Art - As well as developing our sketching and drawing skills further we are currently planning sculptures based on a range of different natural disasters. We are busily collecting appropriate materials to represent the colour, shape and texture. Watch this space for photos. Our artist of the term is JMW Turner who depicts a range of stormy weather scenes in his art work. PSHE: We have been exploring themes such as choosing friends based on our interests and how to appreciate the opinions of others in a non-threatening way. Computing we have been learning about IP addresses and networks MfL - We have been revising Spanish pronouns and regular verbs. Design and Technology will involve us designing early warning systems for a natural disaster - we will be blocking this project out in the last week of this half term. GEOGRAPHY: We have made an explosive start to our learning based on our 'Extreme Earth.' Pupils explored the location of different places around the world and considered the variation in climate and weather. We also explored some of our planet's most extreme weather.
We were lucky enough to receive a visit from Isabelle Gorst who is a Meteorology student currently completing her PHD. She shared some really interesting information with us about how weather is measured. She also gave us some tips about what subjects to study should we want to take up the study of the weather. Well done Year 6 you really have made an amazing start to Year 6.
Literacy: We have been revisiting word class in SPaG and looking at spelling rules when adding suffixes. We are already hooked with Alex Rider's adventures in Storm breaker by Anthony Horowitz (our class author). We are just in the process of establishing what our impression of Alex's character is and then we will be producing a character description together. Our Year 6s will then get to choose a character of their own to describe. Maths: We have been ensuring out times tables skills remain top notch and are in the middle of the three week X Table challenge. We are completing in some lightning speeds. In our maths lessons we have been exploring mathematical structures and developing number stories around a variety of different structures and forms. We have been applying the use of our key mathematical vocabulary. Well done to all the children who will be in Team LL next year. We have had the most amazing transition time together. We have worked hard to develop our class rules. We have spent some time getting to know each other. Children have enjoyed showing the staff just how superb their writing skills are: as they produced a volcano description. Children added all the things that make them special to their pickle jar and also created their hand of five special people. I have been amazed by their art skills. The children enjoyed finding out about our themes for learning and we are all really looking forward to working together in September.
