During the Spring Term, pupils in Team LL have thoroughly enjoyed learning about Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Whilst exploring the genre of historic fiction through their class novel, the class have developed historic narratives detailing Carter’s epic discovery. Pupils have researched past events to ensure their narratives combined historically accurate information, whilst using their imaginations to convey thoughts and feelings of the characters. The children explored how language use has changed over time and adapted their style as appropriate for the task. The class will also be writing first person accounts in the form of diaries and developing their non-fiction writing skills through science investigations.

During the Spring Term, Team CC have been using their reading stimulus of Robin Hood to write some rules for the King’s Castle and a list of people who were allowed in our Merry Men hideout. The class had also written wanted posters for the Sheriff of Nottingham because they wanted people to stop him from catching Robin Hood! They have been working really hard on their letter formation, as well as applying their phonics into writing and including basic punctuation in what they record. Keep up the excellent work Team CC.
As part of their History topic, Team CT are exploring the Great Fire of London. Their writing has been largely linked to this, with the class working to create their own newspaper article on the events of the Great Fire of London. To start the unit, the class conducted research before completing and interactive game linked to the events of the disaster. To ensure their writing was robust and appropriate to genre, the class focussed on using expanded noun phrases and speech within their writing. Once these were complete they read to children lower down school to support in their understanding of the event in future years.
During the class' continuous provision activities in the Spring Term, the children have been encouraged to apply their phonics skills to write speech bubbles for story characters. They have also used purposeful, real-life scenarios to make shopping lists. In addition to this, Team WM have been busy writing sentences about a story or labels for a picture. They have had lots of fun thinking of different animals that the zoo might send them, based on the story of Dear Zoo.
Today our Key Stage 2 classes have been full of a buzz and excitement about their Literacy, as they received a visit from a member of staff at Hogwarts. The children were taught how to create their own potions to help them in their understanding of instruction writing, but most important to stop Boggarts from taking on fears. The class created their own wands and potions which were then transformed into a detailed account of how to effectively replicate the potion. I must say, I was most shocked to find a potion of "How to turn a teacher into a frog". The children of Key Stage 2 were really enthusiastic about their learning and it was a pleasure to see. I'm sure the imagination and engagement in lesson will continue to filter through in all the children put their mind to this week! Well done TEAM Park Street!
Tomorrow will see a buzz of excitement around school as Barefoot Arts Education will be in school to deliver an exciting session to all Key Stage 2 classes around creative writing. Writing is something we are incredibly passionate about and we can't wait to see how much our pupils take from the session. I have it on good authority, that it may have links to Harry Potter and the fabulous author J K Rowling. I am sure the children will be absolutely gripped as we explore the power of how reading can influence writing. Be sure to check back on the blog later to see evidence of what classes got up to!
This term, the children in Team AF have been looking at the familiar fairy-tale of Snow White. After reading the text, the children received a letter from Snow White’s mum informing them that Snow White was missing. The children focused on creating a wanted poster to help find Snow White. They then used another text driver, Snow White in New York to generate a recount of the events. The class focused on sentence structure, conjunctions and basic punctuation within their writing.
In nursery, we provide opportunities for mark making everywhere, both inside and outside to inspire the children to make different marks in purposeful situations.
The children have enjoyed making marks on large rolls of paper, with gigantic chalks on the playground floor, with their fingers in shaving foam and gloop as well as with pens and paper, Our writing area is very popular and some of our children often choose to draw and write linked to their interests. Some of us can write our names and some are starting to write some of the sounds in words to go with our pictures! Our main aim in nursery is that children are confident to make a range of marks and talk about them. We provide the foundations for writing and we want every child to feel that they are a writer as we value all marks! Wow! We are so proud of the children in the Robins this week as there has been so much independent writing! The children have been inspired to write independently in our continuous provision, applying the skills they have learnt during our Read Write Inc sessions.
Some children have chosen to draw pictures and write labels to match, some have written sentences about animals linked to our weekly theme and some have even written their own stories! As we have so many budding authors, we have taught the children how to make their own books to extend their interests. We cannot wait to see what writing can be produced next week! During the course of the Spring Term, the children in Team AC have written a diary entry of their own retelling the events of The Great Fire of London as they unfolded over the four days that the fire lasted. The children thought carefully about the type of language they used within their writing and ensured where possible correct historical terms were incorporated. To support them, they have learnt how to sequence their ideas through story boarding to enable them to transfer this accurately in written form. The class have worked hard on the need to what they write to ensure that all sentences make sense and flow accordingly.
