This term we have had lots of opportunities to develop our gross and fine motor skills which are essential for writing. We have loved our ribbon dancing where we have been making circles, lines, zig-zags, up and down and across movements on a large scale to music. We have also had lots of opportunities to explore play dough, gloop and foam, threading and mark making on a small and large scale to develop our fine motor skills. In the writing area, we have been mark making linked to our weekly themes and some of us have been learning to write our names to go on our pictures.

Today marks a very special day in our calendar as it is National Poetry Day. Across school, all our children will be taking part in learning linked to poetry, right from Nursery working on Nursery Rhymes to Year 6 recreating Jabberwocky on the Green Screen! We have so many wonderful activities planned, which include both reading and writing poetry. Teachers will enjoy sharing some of their favourite poems before our children get hands on creating their own wonderful writing, Our writing will take all forms, with some of our children heading outdoors to gather ideas practically as their stimulus for writing. We can't wait to see this wonderful work throughout school in the coming weeks!
Tomorrow marks National Poetry Day across the country. Schools around the UK will be celebrating some of literature's finest poems and the theme for this year is vision. With so many different forms of poetry including couplets, tongue twisters, shape poems, calligrams, acrostic, riddles, limericks, haiku, kennings and odes - we are taking on the challenge of exploring some of these text types further. The aim is for each class throughout school to create a poem linked with this year's theme, but covering a range of styles. We can't wait to share these with you and hope to have a display of some of our favourites very shortly!
If you want to get involved in this year's poetry day, why not challenge your family to a poetry battle? Perhaps you could have a theme of something linked to home? Good luck! With all of our students having settled well into the new academic year, it has been lovely to see and hear of all the fantastic progress they are making towards their phonics, reading, writing and SPAG objectives. That said, we are always looking for ways in which we can further support our students and parents/carers. Attached below are a list of useful websites we have compiled which we feel may benefit children in either securing, refining or consolidating some of the Literacy learning they encounter within the classroom. We hope you find this to be a useful tool and one which encourages, motivates and engages those young minds! ![]()
Yesterday marked an important day in the calendar for Roald Dahl enthusiasts as it was Roald Dahl Day. This day is celebrated annually on 13th September to raise the profile of the fantastic work that Roald Dahl contributed to encouraging young readers. In school, we have made sure to celebrate his valued contribution through discovering more about his famous works. Classes have been tasked with investigating one of his well known books and engaging in a lesson linked to their chosen text. Some children have been busy designing and making a tortoise linked to Esio Trot with knowledge of ratio and proportion, others have been creating their own perilous potion recipes linked to George's Marvellous Medicine. We have even had children creating their own characters who's personality does not match their appearance, much like in the case of The BFG. All in all, it has been an excellent opportunity for our students to learn more about the fantastic works that Roald Dahl produced and further their understanding of why he still remains such an influential children's author!
Did you know today is International Literacy Day? The event is an annual awareness day held each year on the 8th of September which marks the importance of Literacy to all countries and cultures. Whilst we are always promoting and practicing our Literacy skills across school, today our students will gain an insight into more of what this day represents and why Literacy is so important.
From reading to writing, our pupils are constantly developing and broadening their application of Literacy-based learning and should be immensely proud of the hard work they put in to harnessing new skills. So, why not celebrate International Literacy Day in a way that your child best enjoys? Perhaps you could share your favourite story with your child before bed tonight and explain what made you fall in love with the book? Maybe you could create your own 'unexpected end to the day' story around the dinner table? Or why not enjoy some digital Literacy online. Dig deeper into some of your child's favourite genres through BBC Bitesize using the link below: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/subjects/zv48q6f Happy International Literacy Day! We would like to begin by wishing you the warmest of welcomes back to Park Street following the annual Summer holidays. We hope you have all managed a restful and well earned break and can't wait to get back to seeing all your friendly faces each day!
As with any new school year, we are looking forward to documenting all the fantastic Literacy learning that has been taking place across our school. From reading to writing, phonics to SPAG, we can't wait to show you all the brilliant learning journey we are about to embark on. Make sure you check back on here for regular updates about what is happening across the English curriculum as well as exciting ways we will aim to mark some of our Theme Days. We are so eager to share the wonderful work we will craft over the coming months! With the Summer holidays just around the corner, we would like to take this opportunity to thank both our parents/carers and our pupils for their continued support this year. We are so appreciative of all the hard work our learners have put in to working from home, as well as the help they have had in achieving this from those at home with them. We certainly would love nothing more than to give them a huge pat on the back and are truly looking forward to welcoming each face back in September.
Some resources will remain available to children in to the holidays that we have previously blogged about such as Ruth Miskin's Read Write Inc. We hope you will continue to find these useful and hope that you all have a restful, relaxing and well earned break over the summer. See you in September! The National Literacy Trust offers a wealth of resources to support with reading and writing at home. Following school closures, the trust have offered many fantastic resources by their Family Zone. These are age grouped and offer reading and writing opportunities for all. Why not check out some of their content to see if anything takes your fancy?
Use the link below and then select the appropriate age range for your child: https://literacytrust.org.uk/family-zone/ David Walliams is a much loved author amongst children at Wombwell Park Street. The children love the humour within his books and unique way in which he tells his stories. Over the course of home learning, he has provided Elevenses which has given our children the chance to listen to some of his funniest stories from home.
This serves as an excellent addition to home learning as our students can experience listening to others read the story; providing chance for modelling of intonation and expression, as well as allowing them to further focus on comprehending the direction of the story and the plot. Should you want to take a listen, why not catch on this week's audio clips using the link below. https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses-catch-up/ You could also try BBC Bitesize for some work linked to David Walliams Slime where you take reading into writing. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zqpx8hv |
