As part of Team CB's writing this term, the class have been creating their own newspaper reports linked to the Anglo Saxon invasion. To enable the class to do this, they firstly took on drama parts to act out the scene and support them in recalling events. They then dissected what features were needed within the text and any relevant grammar skills they may need to acquire before writing their own. If you would like to read all about it, why not look at the images below to see examples of our fabulous writing?

During this term, the class wrote their own newspaper articles linked to the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the start of the First World War. To ensure they were incorporating the correct features for this genre, the class analysed similar articles written during the war period before creating their own. Further to this, Team LG also looked at war poetry, taking into consideration the emotion portrayed within war poems. They also looked at elements of SPAMO and included this within their work where applicable.
During the Spring term, the children in Team GG have read the Stone Age boy. This was a great text to use as a hook into writing as it linked well with the history topic being taught in class. The children could then use their knowledge of understanding of the historical period of time within their own writing. Through exploring the events in the text and applying their historical knowledge, the children had the challenge of writing their own diary entry. Before they wrote their own, the class read through different extracts of diary entries to unpick the features, the language and the layout.
During the Spring Term, Team JF have been using the book The Stone Age boy to inspire their own writing. This text was selected not only to support the class in understanding life during this time (as this links directly to their current History topic of The Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age) but to also to base their own adventure stories on. Children used the text driver to plan their own writing and as soon as they had edited and published their pieces they were then able to share these with younger children through school.
During the Autumn Term, Team CC have been working really hard to combine their knowledge of phonics into writing! The class have been learning phoneme and grapheme correspondence in order to form letters correctly and begin to write CVC words accurately. Fred the Frog has been very helpful in teaching the class to Fred Talk these first. The children have had lots of fun writing Christmas lists and letters to Father Christmas, which they have read aloud in their reading tent!
During the Autumn Term, Team LL developed character descriptions after analysing devices and strategies applied in Stormbreaker. The class wrote a character description of Alex: developing character through – actions, interactions, dialogue and description. Pupils wrote letters to Alex giving reasons for and against taking the mission. As a class, they also developed detailed accounts of Alex’s journey through the Dozmary Mine. The children applied their understanding of strategies identified in the novel to create their own imagery, build suspense and create a sense of pace. Team LL also wrote biographies of Guy Fawkes. As part of our geography topic ‘Extreme Earth’, the children also developed non-chronological reports based on a chosen subject (e.g. volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes).
During the Autumn term Team AC have been busy writing in various different forms to Katie Morag. They have considered different genres of writing throughout the term and the styles that these texts have. For instance, they have written a letter to Katie, as well as also creating some descriptive writing about new places linked to her adventures. Non-chronological texts have also been taught which allowed the children to demonstrate their ability to include new geographical vocabulary in an appropriate context.
Linking with their reading focus for story time, Team AF have been using The Gruffalo as a text driver to generate their own setting descriptions of the woods where the Gruffalo lived. As a SPAG focus the class looked at adjectives and feelings linked to the setting as well as different senses to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences they would be exposed to should they find themselves in the woods.
During Autumn Term, Team CT have been focussing on lots of different styles of writing. One included instructional writing where the class wrote instructions for how to turn someone into something magical. This was a very exciting unit, which began with the children completing active literacy games in the hall to understand importance of instructions and the need to follow them in order. As a class, they studied imperative verbs and adverbs before writing their sequenced instructions and then reading to aloud to one another.
During the Autumn Term, Team JF linked their literacy to their geography topic and researched a variety of things in Brazil. From this, they decided to write their own non fiction posters to inform others of life in this part of the world. The children were able to choose 3 key areas they wanted to know more about and present them to one another. They then centered their learning around the Amazon and started exploring the impact of deforestation. As they learned more, the class made the decision to write a letter to the Brazilian government to persuade them to change their behaviour and suggest a move to sustainable deforestation.
