It's been a busy couple of weeks in Team DB, we have performed our Christmas concert for our grown-ups at home. The children were marvellous, as always, and did an excellent job! Well done Team DB, you were fab!
Writing
In Year 5, we have started a new topic in our writing, learning about how to write instructions effectively. The children have used a hook into their learning, discovering where and how instructions are used in every day life. Moreover, the children have been learning the literary features that are used to write instructions and have been implementing these into their own writing. Reading During our class reading sessions we have been continuing to enjoy the class text, 'The Arrival'. This is a book based on images rather than words, and the children are having to use their previous knowledge of texts to try and tell the story through the pictures presented. As a class we have had deep conversations surrounding moving from one country to another with the possibility of doing this alone without our families. Maths In our maths sessions we have been continuing our learning about decimal fractions, involving hundredths. The children have been developing their knowledge surrouding addition, subtraction, multiplication and division when using decimal fractions and whole numbers. Science We have been very busy in our science sessions, learning all about sound. As part of our investigation, we discovered that the further away a sound is the harder it is for us to hear. We took ourselves outside to investigate, which saw us testing our hearing skills. Today the children have been learning about the history of Children In Need and how it started one November Day back in 1980 - which of course is a really long time ago to our Year 5s! During their reading, the children developed an understanding how the charity developed from a tradition established during the 1930s, whereby there would be a 5 minute radio plea on Christmas Day for those children who were less fortunate. This then progressed into a televised plea as technology progressed, until, finally becoming a telethon on national TV.
The children established an understanding of Sir Terry Wogan's legacy and how he was the face of Children in Need for many years. To help raise money for this amazing cause, the children were invited to wear spots for the day, as well as taking part in Spot-tacular event, chasing and finding as many spots as they could around Park Street. And, because Team DB are fabulous, they found all 50 in no time at all. Throughout the day, the participated in maths events, as well activities during out Incredible Us! time. During the Autumn half term Teams JD, DB and LF have been studying the similarities and differences between Wombwell and Whitby. As part of their Design and Technology learning, the children were asked to research, design and create a box to contain a holiday souvenir. The children spent time researching what a holiday souvenir is, looking at what holiday souvenir would be appropriate for the ize of box they were designing as well as looking at different shaped boxes, their construction and what would be a useful box itself. The children then moved onto designing their box, considering how the box would be constructed and how it would be held together. We spent some time constructing prototypes of various shapes and sizes, enabling the children time to evaluate which one would be the most appropriate for its use. The children then created their own boxes using the craft skills they had learned during the day. We then spent time evaluating each others' boxes, identifying what went well and how we could improve our designs for furture DT activities. This week in Team DB we have been very busy in all areas of our learning. Literacy In Literacy, the children have been working very hard in their writing these past few weeks. We have been sudying poems by our class author, Michael Morpurgo. The children have been reading poems and short stories written about nature itself and trees, from his text, 'My Heart is a Tree'. Based on Morpurgo's love of nature, the children have been focussing upon adding similes and metaphors into their writing, as well as adding powerful adjectives and expaned noun phrases. Maths In our maths learning this week, we have been continuing our learning about decimal fractions. We have been developing our understanding about tenths and representing these using diennes, fractions and decimals. P.E. During our P.E. session this week, we have been sequencing our Bollywood style dance together. We worked as a whole class and used various moves and different dance styles, including the Peacock, Lotus, The Prayer as well as various foot movements. The children have enjoyed listening to the different music styles from Indian culture. Teams JD, LF and DB participated in a DT Day this week. The objective was to design and create a box to hold a seaside souvenir. The children had aleady chosen a shell as there object, as this casually linked to their Art learning. The children researched their project first, looking at different box designs and which would be better for their own box, The children were tasked with designing, creating a blue print desing to then actually creating their boxes. The children had great fun drawing their boxes and then creating them for the end product, They had to decide WWW and EBI, whilst providing constructive feedback to their peers. This half term we have continued our learning about Islam. We have learnt that people who follow the Islamic religion are called Muslims and that the faith was founded in Saudi Arabia. We know that Muslims believe in one God, who is called Allah and that he has ninety-nine names. During our lessons, we have also learnt that the Islamic faith follows the 'Five pillars of Islam' and these are the main beliefs of the religion. , We had the privilege of a workshop, led by Imran, a follower of the Islamic faith. Imran focussed on the importance of prayer, the times in which Muslims pray and how they pray within a mosque. He brought artefacts for the children to look at and also taught the children the key features of a Mosque building. The children thoroughly enjoyed listening intently to Imran, and were very enthusiastic about taking part in a workshop activity. The children explored the different headress worn by Muslims as well as looking in detail at the various prayer mats used by both adults and children. Today in R.E. the children have been developing their understanding about the Five Pillars of Islam: Shahadah - the Muslim statement of their faith; Salah - Muslims pray five times each day; Zakat - giving to those in need; Sawm - fasting during Ramadan; Hajj - the pilgrimage to the Holy City The whole class got out of their seats to explore the Five Pillars around the classroom, matching the statements to each of the Five Pillars. |
