What a fantastic experience the Sunshines had on Wednesday! We had a visit from Michala at Lion Learners and she bought in some animals for us to meet. We did some very carefully listening about how to handle the animals, and how important it was for us to wash our hands before and after handling the animals. We got to meet Timmy the Royal Python, Spinderella the Tarantula, Claude the Bearded Dragon, Nina the Guinea Pig and Xena the Millipede.
Michala demonstrated how to safely interact with the animals and made it clear that if we didn't want to hold or touch them we didn't have to. She gave a choice if we could like to hold some of them, stroke them or have them placed on our leg. While we were holding the animals she told us some really interesting facts. The Royal Python can be found in Africa and has 300 bones. One member of Team EO asked how many bones humans have so after our workshop we used Google to find out and now know that adults have 206 bones and children have 270 which then fuse together! We learnt that Timmy shreds his skin every 3 months to grow. We discussed what Nina like to eat and drink. Spinderella and Claude were both 8 years old and we learnt that Xena has 250 legs! We said they tickled us when we held her! It was wonderful to see how brave, and engaged with the animals the Sunshine were. We had a lovely afternoon and the adults are super proud of everyone!

Team EO were amazed on Tuesday morning when they saw how much their broad beans plants had grown and that the sunflowers we planted last week had started to shoot too!
The Sunshines took home their broad bean plants on Tuesday. We would love you to measure them as they grow and send us updates on Seasaw! We have enjoyed observing our sunflower seeds to see how they have grown and changed too! We will bring these home one day next week! This week’s line of inquiry has been “What’s inside a fruit?’. We started the week listening attentively to the story ‘A Fruit is a Suitcase for a Seed’. We learnt that a fruit is a ripened part of a flowering plant that contains seeds and that vegetables grow from plants but do no have seeds in or on them. This helped us to distinguish between different types of fruit and vegetables. We have also enjoyed listening to Oliver’s Fruit Salad and we have been practising singing and signing along to ‘The Planting Song’ and ‘Way Up High in an Apple’. Our learning activities this week have included; making a shopping list of different types of fruits, looking at the inside of different fruits at the seeds and drawing what we can see, sorting photos into fruit and vegetables, making a poster to show how we can stay healthy and in our funky finger area we have been practising our scissors skills to cut out the fruit pieces and sticking them in the bowl to make a fruit salad! In Maths, Year 1 children have started a new unit of learning. We have explained that the digits in the numbers 11-19 express quantity and explained that the digits in the numbers 11 to 19 express position on a number line. Reception children have discussed our understanding of equivalence and made and described double arrangement on fingers, distributed collections into equal and unequal groups, sorted numbers to 10 according to whether each number is a double or not a double and practised rapid recall of double facts to 10. Here we are sharing objects between ourselves and Rosie Rabbit. In Literacy, Year 1 children have been working on writing their alternative short burst for the story “The Whales Song’. We have been working hard to produce independent sentences using capital letters, fingers spaces and full stops accurately, using the conjunction ‘and’ and the suffix ‘es’. We will be finishing these off next week! Reception children continue to access appropriate RWI groups and are trying super hard to produce independent sentences during morning work and in choosing time. Here some are some of the Sunshines and Rainbows during our first read of 'Six Fish' this morning! In PSHE, we have continued to focus on accepting other people and appreciating different views. This week we looked at what strengths an individual might have, we discussed how we will have our own strengths and that these will be different to others, we then went away and identified our own strengths. We will continue working on identifying our strength and then we will share them with a friend and then share what our friend is good at with the class!
We started the week listening carefully to the story ‘A Tiny Seed’. Our learning activities included; using Fred Fingers to write a list of plants and gardening items, cutting and sticking a life cycle of a sunflower, using the tweezers to fill the numicon with magic seeds, making a cupcake case flower and carrying out observational drawings and paintings of roses. We have learnt about the different stages of a sunflowers and we have learnt about the different parts of a plant – petals, leaf, stem, roots and buds). We have also planted our own sunflower seeds and we cannot wait to watch them grow! We have loved observing our beans they have grown so much since the start of the week! This week for our Talk through Stories we have been practising reciting this half-terms poem ‘Zanzibar’. Reception children continue to access RWI groups and are making good progress in their reading and writing. Year 1 children were hooked into their new learning by closing their eyes and listening to the sounds – they guessed correctly that it was whales. Our new text driver is ‘The Whales Song’ and our purpose is to write a short burst from the story. This week we have been learning about the rule for adding the suffix ‘es’ to words to make them plural. In Maths, Reception children have subitised quantities to 5, say which set of objects contains more than the other, used the rekenreks to push amounts of beads that are equal to, more than and fewer than and ordered towers to 10 – recognising the ‘1 more’ pattern of number. Our Year 1 children started the week learning to explain what happens when a number is subtracted from itself. We then moved onto doubling numbers and know that doubling is when the addends are the same. We have also explored halving and know that halving is the inverse of doubling and is when a number is split into two equal parts. We are fantastic at recalling doubles and halves within 10. In Science, we have begun our new unit of learning ‘Living Things and their habitats’. We started by completing our pre-unit assessment that got stuck straight into our learning on exploring and comparing the difference between things that are living, dead and never been alive. We were amazing at sorting items into the categories – living, dead and never been alive! In PE, we warmed up by travelling around our designated area in a variety of ways – we are working on listening to commands and looking for space to move into. Next, we were put into 6 groups and completed the shuttle run as a relay race – we had to sprint to 3 different distanced cones before returning to the start after each cone. We then had a sprint race where we had to run to the opposite end and back twice. We had lots of fun!
On Thursday, we went on Welly Walk and enjoyed looking at all the flowers in bloom and carrying observational drawings. Team EO love listening to a variety of storybooks and enjoy snuggling up in the tent to share books. Today it was lovely to see the girls choosing to practise their phonics skills in their choosing time!
This week we have explored the question “What do plants need to grow?”. We started the week listening attentively to ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Our learning activities have included; ordering the life cycle of a bean, making a book cover with our name and a beanstalk illustration, building a castle, making a leaf to add to our class beanstalk, writing instructions on ‘How to plant a seed?’ and in our funky finger area we have had a track game where we had to build a beanstalk! On Tuesday, we learnt that plants need soil, water, air and light to grow and we have all planted our own bean seed which are excited to watch grow and we have been observing throughout the week to see if we can see any shoots! We have started to learn “The Planting Song” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a44NFSiIn54) and we have been learning Makaton signs to go with it too! Our Talk through Stories this week was ‘The Bear and The Piano’. We were able to identify the characters and the problem, we have learnt about the meanings of new words and we have taken on the role of the ‘Bear’ and carried out freeze-frames to show how we feel in different scenarios! In Literacy, our Year 1 children have written questions that they wanted to know about their job, they have them presented these to their peers and we have asked Google their questions to find out the answer! In Maths, Reception children have subitised numbers to 5, arranged 6 or 8 objects into groups that can be subitised, shown numbers from 5 to 10 in ‘5 and a bit’ arrangements, counted 20 objects, practised saying the ‘tricky’ teen numbers and practised counting to 100. We have also discussed strategies for counting larger amounts that can’t be moved. Year 1 children have learnt to; explain what happens when 2 is added to or subtracted from odd and even numbers, explain what the difference is between consecutive odd and even numbers and explained what happens when zero is added to or subtracted from a number. In Science, we have looked at the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amount of different types of foods and hygiene. We know that exercise makes our muscles stronger, makes us flexible and improves our circulation. We know that there are 5 food groups and that each food group has an important job. We can name basic hygiene rules that prevent the spread of germs – we know that germs are super small living things that make us poorly!
In PSHE, our enquiry question has been “Why do we like and dislike different things?”. We know that other people have different likes, dislikes and opinions from ourselves and that it is okay but we know that it is still important to listen to the opinions of others. Our learning this week has focused on minibeasts and where they live. We started the week listening to the story “Superworm” by Julia Donaldson. This week our Funky Finger activity was to wind the thread around the worm templates to make our very own "Superworm"! Our other activities have included; writing about our favourite minibeasts, creating junk modelled minibeasts, painting finger print paintings and spotting doubles on ladybirds! We have had some fantastic independent writing this week and we are super proud! We have learnt to name a variety of different minibeasts and we know that insects have 6 legs and antennae. We have also learnt about some of the different micro-habitats that each minibeast lives in. On Welly Walk we had a wonderful time exploring our nature reserve hunting for different minibeast – we found; woodlice, bees, a wasp, a ladybird, worms, a spider and a beetle to name a few! In Literacy, our Year 1 children have continued with their unit of work on questions. This week that have worked had to come up with questions about different stimuli in preparation for writing questions about their chosen aspirational jobs next week. In Maths, our Reception children have spent the week exploring a new manipulative that they will be using in their learning going forward. The children learnt that it is called a "rekenrek" and we have spent lots of time learning how to use this equipment correctly learnt using ‘one finger, one push’ to move the beads. Our Year 1 children have been practising recalling pairs of numbers to 10, adding one to any number, subtracting one from any number and we have learnt to explain what the difference is between consecutive numbers. In Science, we have learnt about the three basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival – air, water and food and we can say why each need is important.
In PSHE, we explored feelings and began to show an understanding of not only our own feelings but of those around us. The Sunshines regularly have brain breaks where we take part in 'Just Dances' and repeat after me songs. This week we have enjoyed taking part in different yoga activities.
We spoke about how this helps our brain relax, to stay calm and focused and we know that this is good for our mental wellbeing Wow1 What a fantastic first week back we have had and we have done lots of amazing learning. We have started our new topic ‘Watch it Grow’. Our learning question this week has been on ‘How does it grow and change?’ with a focus on life cycles. We started the week listening to the story “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. This week in our Talk through Story time we have focused on this half-terms poem “Zanzibar” which is about a caterpillar growing into a butterfly – we will continue to practise reciting this poem throughout the half-term. Our learning activities this week have included; painting symmetrical butterflies, creating split pin frogs, sequencing the picture cards to retell the story, using our Fred Fingers to spell the foods that the caterpillar ate, creating a caterpillar on a leaf and making a domino rally in our funky finger area! We have also enjoyed playing our caterpillar track game with our friends! Our Reception children have been accessing their new RWI groups. In Literacy, our Year 1 children have started a new piece of work on questions. Our text driver for this unit of work is “An Engineer Like Me”. Our text is questions, audience is Miss Overton and our purpose is to generate questions to find out about an aspirational job. This week we have learnt that a question is a type of sentence that asks something and ends with a question mark not a full stop! We have learnt question words and identified these in a text and we have identified whether a sentence is a question or not In Maths, our Reception children have practised their subitising within 5. We have also been practising joining in with a backward count from 5 to 1 and ordered towers of cubes from 1-10 on a class number track, we have described the position of each number on a number track and we have looked at the rules for a new linear track game! In Maths, our Year 1 children have learnt to explain that addition and subtraction are inverse operation, learnt to explain that addition is commutative and we have begun to learn to find pairs of numbers to 10. In History, we have looked at the changes that were made in London after the fire. We know streets were made wider, houses were built further apart and that they were made out of brick. In RE, we recapped our learning on Ramadan and know that Muslim’s fast during Ramadan. We know that at the end of Ramadan Muslims break fast with a celebration called “Eid”. We know that Muslims celebrate Eid by getting new clothes, going to the Mosque and by have a party with their family and friends with lots of yummy food! We made some “Happy Eid-al-Fitr” cards which we passed to Mr Holmes to give to Mrs Chavan to take to Barnsley Mosque. In Science, we continued our learning on Animals including Humans and we looked at different life cycles including; humans, butterfly, chicken and frog. We know that the term ‘metamorphosis’ describes the change from a caterpillar to a butterfly. On Welly Walk, we took part in a Spring nature wall. We drew and wrote about what we could see, hear, feel and smell. We had a lovely time exploring our nature reserve in the sun and to see how it has changed from Winter to Spring.
lToday Team EO a trip to the library.
The grown-ups who supported at the library were super proud of how safely the children to and from the library! At the library we learnt about different types of books that they have including; non-fiction, audiobooks, board books and easy to read books. We then listened to the librarian read us a story informing us about different farm animals then completed a word search within our groups before exploring and reading the different books independently. We ended our library session listening to a fiction story! |
