In Year 6 children have been developing their basketball skills. We have been focusing on marking and defence developing the correct stance and shooting effectively after dribbling. we have been developing further our knowledge and use of key vocabulary including: intercept, target, arc and accuracy. We have also completed a classroom based unit on mindfulness as well being is about the mind as well as the body

Team LL and AF are thoroughly enjoying our work on The Extreme Earth. we have explored the make up of the Earth and looked more closely at plate tectonics. Following this, we have looked at a range of natural disasters. We have focused on a region of the Earth called the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is where may of the plates of the Earth meet and results in a high volume of earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. We have applied our map skills and geographical vocabulary to locate and describe the position of various locations. HISTORY FOCUS: We have researched a range of historical natural disasters and the impact they had on communities locally and on a global scale. Pretty fascinating stuff!
Children worked in groups to investigate the question…’Is there a link between your outstretched arms and your height?’
Children had to decide how they would carry out the investigation, how to measure and how to record. Pupils then looked for patterns in their data. We felt that the data from just a few children wasn’t enough to look in detail at patterns so we collated the data for the full class. Children drew conclusions and identified anomalous data which may have been down to inaccuracies in measurement so children rechecked. After this children suggested their own investigations for pattern seeking. Today the Year 6 children have been learning about Diwali. This will be celebrated by Hindus during half term. We learnt about what Diwali was and why it is celebrated. We then looked at how it is celebrated. We found out about the iconic 'Diya' lamp and made these using clay.
LO: Generate electrical circuit investigation questions.
TASK: Experiment with making a range of circuits using bulbs, wires, motors, buzzers, cells/batteries and switches. Children worked in pairs and small groups to experiment with the circuit components they then discussed what they had discovered and generated their own enquiry questions here are some examples from the children in Year 6 Over the last few weeks we have been working hard in maths. We have been developing and refining our written methods for formal multiplication and division. We made outstanding progress on our times tables race challenge. we also had a very competitive inter-class TT Rockstars tournament. We have been applying our skills to a range of word problems and reasoning challenges.
In literacy we have been continuing to read all about Alex Rider's adventures in Stormbreaker. We recently, developed our own descriptions of Alex's journey through the Dozmary Mine. We considered figurative language including: personification, metaphors, similes and pathetic fallacy. We have been revising expanded, complex noun phrases and have tried where appropriate to add these to our own writing. We have been working hard on our daily reading challenges and RWI spelling work. As part of our computing lesson, we have been using Purple Mash for coding and designing flowcharts. In this lesson, we looked at ‘Billy’s Bedroom’ and followed some flowcharts that had been set up to show different procedures to aid visual effects. We debugged any incorrect procedures to ensure that they worked. After this, we created our own procedures to show visual aids for different items in the bedroom which had not been coded.
As part of our computing lesson, we have been using Purple Mash for coding and designing functions. We first started by designing our own functions and carefully looking at the properties of an object. We then made a function. This allowed us to set up a variable and run a code so that an object does something that it is coded to do. We call this executing. This allowed us to have a command that was performed and the object did what we wanted it to
