This week we have thought about and discussed whether all fairy tales have a happy ending and started by listening to “Cinderella”. Throughout the week we have also listened to “Sleeping Beauty” – we concluded that both of these fairy tales have a happy ending and we were very pleased that they did. We have also thought about characteristics of a fairy tale and know that they have a good character, bad character and some magic. For our Talk through Stories this week we have focused on having poetry time where we have begun to learn “Bedtime March-Past” that we look forward to sharing with you at our class assembly. Our learning activities have included; using multi-link cubes to measure the length of wands, copying fairy-tale themed building brick models, writing party invitations and thought bubbles about what we would wish for if we had a fairy godmother, creating wands, crowns and shields and threading the correct number of beads onto the wands. In Literacy, Year 1’s have worked hard to join two sentences together using the conjunction ‘and’. The children have been describing several different settings in preparation for writing the description of the top of the beanstalk. Children have worked hard to ensure their sentences have capital letters, finger spaces and full stops with correctly formed letters. We have also tried to include the conjunction ‘and’ in our own sentences. Reception continue to access their appropriate RWI groups. In Maths, Reception started the week comparing length and height to measure how long/tall an object is. We then used our conceptual subitising to describe parts of a whole set and described the arrangements, next we investigated ways of making 7 using two pars and used our fingers to make and describe 7 as “5 and 2 more”, then we worked out the missing part of 7 using the “5 and a bit” structure and finally we have seen that 7 can be composed in different ways and explained our understanding the composition of 7. Our Year 1 children started the week representing the numbers 6 to 10 using the five and a bit structure, next we identified the whole and parts of the numbers 6-10 using the five and a bit structure, then we explored the numbers 6-10 using the part whole model and the five and a bit structure, finally we explained where 6,7,8 and 9 lie on a number line. In Science, we have learnt that animals are grouped together in ‘families’ based on shared properties and know that the names of the groups are: birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and fish. We have been listening to this song to help us remember them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VixROiu8Qg. We learnt that these animals are similar in that they have vertebrates and we have been identifying animals in each group that we can find in Barnsley and the wider world. In PSHE through oracy, we have explored the question “Why do I need to wash my hands?”. We started by sharing ideas with our talk partner about when we should wash our hands and then we learnt that germs are everywhere and that they are even on our hands. We know that germs are so small that we cannot see them and that if we do not wash them away then we can spread the germs and they will get into our bodies and make us poorly.

Our story of the week this week was ‘’Little Red Riding Hood”. This week our focus was on story goodies and story baddies – we could identify the Woodchopper as the story goodie and the wolf as the story baddie. We also listened to the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ where we identified Goldilocks as the baddie and the Bears as the goodies. Our Talk through Stories this week was ‘On the Way Home’ by Jill Murphy. We started by listening attentively to the story, we then identified the characters and explored what the problem was. We have enjoyed joining in with the favourite phrases and showing expressions in a freeze-frame when given a situation from the story. Our learning activities have included; using puppets in the small world area to retell the story, creating wanted posters, playing ‘what time is it Mr Wolf?’, making flowers using creative materials, weaving the ribbon in and out of Little Red Riding Hoods’ basket and playing a CVC game where we had to roll the dice, move our counter along and if we landed on a word we had to use our Fred Talk to read the word. We were also challenged to make a maze using the Duplo for the characters to go through - just like Little Red Riding Hood had to go through the forest to get to her grandmas house. In Literacy, our Year 1 children have started their new unit of learning where our end piece of writing will be a setting description. The children started the week listening to the traditional tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ where they then answered questions related to the story. Next, we were introduced to our text driver ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’, we looked at the cover and predicted what might happen within the story after listening to the story we compared how it was similar and different to the traditional story. We have also been introduced to conjunctions and know these join clauses/sentences together. Here we are hard at work completing our handwriting, red words and hold a sentence! In Maths, Reception children started the week looking at capacity where we used the language full, empty and nearly full and we can say that the taller containers don’t always hold more. Throughout the rest of the week we have subitised arrangements of 6 and not 6, ordered Numberblock images to 8, represented 8 as ‘5 and 3 more’, described how to place the numbers 1-8 in order, explained how to order quantities to 10, reasoned about which numbers are ‘more than’ others and noticed when numbers are increased or decreased and explained our thinking. Our Year 1 children have explored, discussed and compared 2D shapes, explored, discussed and identified circles and shapes that are not circles, explored, discussed and identified triangles and shapes that are not triangles and explored, discussed and compared quadrilaterals. In History, we learnt that the year 1666 was over 350 years ago and we know that this is the year that the Great Fire of London broke out. We looked at photographs of modern London and with our talk partners we discussed what we could see including; houses, buildings, transport and people. Next, we thought about why we don’t have photos of what London was like in 1666 (17th century) and we discovered that this was because cameras had not been invented! For our main task, we worked as a group to sort picture of past and present London. We discussed how the buildings were different in the past and how the people travelled differently. In PSHE, we have looked at the question ‘Why do I brush my teeth?’. We then spoke about how it is just as important to look after our teeth like we look after the rest of our body. We learnt that we need to brush our teeth twice a day and that brushing them gets rid of any food that is on our teeth that may cause them damage. We then listened to a song about brushing teeth – we know we go up and down, around and around and left to right! Then in our choosing time we practised cleaning dirt off some model teeth - we practised going up and down and all around!
Our story of the week this week was ‘’The Three Little Pigs”. We have enjoyed listening to and joining in with the favourite phrases throughout the week as part of Talk through Stories learning. The children are experts at identifying the characters and the problem in stories and are perfecting their expressions in freeze-frames when given a situation from the story! We have listened to an alternative version of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and we looked at how they were same and different. We identified that they were the same because there were still the same characters, the same problem, the pigs made houses of straw, stick and brick in both books. The differences we identified in the alternative version were that the pigs had names, that the first little pig went to the second little pigs stick house before they both went to the brick house, the wolf burnt his bottom on the pot of boiling water but managed to escape and that the pigs built a new big brick house so they could all live together! Our learning activities have included; using puppets in the small world area to retell the story, writing speech bubbles to show what the characters might say in the story, creating box house models and in the funky fingers area we have been using tweezers or our thumb and index fingers to move matchsticks to create different houses! We could also name different materials, we know a house is usually made of bricks and know that a house needs to be strong and waterproof. We have also enjoyed playing a game called "Run, run as fast as you could...". In Literacy, our Year 1 children have spent the week composing and holding sentences to describe several characters from ‘Snow White in New York’. We have really focused on ensuring our sentences have letters formed correctly, capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. The children have successfully included the prefix ‘un’ in sentences about the wicked Stepmother! On Thursday we practised re-reading our sentences before reading them aloud to our peers! In Maths, Reception children started the week recapping previous learning on balance scales and using the language heavier, lighter, heaviest and lightest. Throughout the rest of the week we revisited the principles of counting, practised counting aloud and used statements such as ‘5 and 1 more makes 6 altogether’ to describe the ‘5 and a bit’ composition of numbers 6-8. We have investigated the ‘1 more/1 less’ pattern of the base-10 counting system and ordered numbers between 1 and 10, noticing the ‘5 and a bit’ structure. Our Year 1 children started the week investigating tetromino and pentomino arrangements. We know a tetromino arrangement is made up of 4 squares and a pentomino arrangement is made up of 5 squares. Next, we investigated ways that four cubes can be composed into different 3D models. We have explored, discussed and compared 3D shapes and identified the 2D shapes within 3D shapes. In Science, we named a variety of common animals including; pets, wild animals, farm animals and woodland animals.
In PSHE, we have looked at the question ‘Why are fruit and vegetables food for me?’ as part of our learning on being able to talk about things that help keep us healthy. We have learnt; that some foods are food for us and some are unhealthy for our body and teeth, fruit and vegetables have vitamins that our body needs to be healthy and we named different fruit and vegetables and some foods that are sweet and have lots of sugar in and we know these are bad for our teeth. Our story of the week this week was ‘The Gingerbread Man’. In the writing area children have been taking on the roles of the characters from the story and writing thought bubbles for what they would be thinking if they were that character - we have had some super writing! Children have been using creative materials to create their own gingerbread man. In our funky finger area, we have been using tweezers to place loose parts on the gingerbread man to add the features! Most excitingly of all, we have baked our own gingerbread man!! In Literacy, Year 1’s have begun a new unit of work based on the story ‘Snow White in New York’. We started by listening to the traditional story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. We then carefully answered questions about the story. We then started reading ‘Snow White in New York’ before pausing to make predictions about what the stepmother was plotting. We have learnt that the prefix ‘un’ changes a word into it’s opposite and means not. We then worked hard to had compose and write sentences containing the prefix ‘un’. In Maths, Year 1 children have begun work on their Geometry unit we have been composing pattern block images (looking at what smaller shapes we can see inside shapes) and continuing and developing patterns! In Maths, Reception children were introduced to balance scales. We know that these are used to weigh objects. We know that the heaviest object makes balance scale go down and the lightest object goes up. We then spent the rest of week comparing sets of objects. We have used the language use ‘more than’ and ‘fewer than’ to describe quantities and we know that it is quantity – not colour, size or type of object – that determines if 1 set has more or fewer items than another. We ended the week using the words ‘an equal number’ to say when there is the same number of items in 2 sets. This week we have completed our pre-unit assessments for our History learning on ‘Why are these people famous? Samuel Pepys and the Great Fire of London’ and for our Science learning on ‘Animals Including Humans’. We are looking forward to diving into these units next week!
In PSHE, we focused on the statement ‘beginning to control our behaviour in a range of situations’. We looked at sharing and how it can make us feel when our friends won’t share with us. We also spoke about the importance of saying sorry and how it can make others feel better. In Music, we started our learning on the unit 'Combining Pulse, Rhythm and Pitch'. We started by finding and trying to keep a steady beat to a piece of music, we copied back simple long and short rhythms with clapping, warmed our face, body and voice up and copied back simple high and low patterns. Next, we listened and responded to the song 'Days of the Week'. We started by listening to the song, then we played it again where we moved, danced and marched along to the song. We spoke about how the song made us feel and whether we liked it or not. Finally, we had a go at singing the song. The staff in Team EO hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year, we would like to say a huge welcome back to everyone.
This half-term our learning journey focus is 'Magical Storyland' where we will explore a variety of traditional tales and fairy tales - we will look at the characteristics of these tales and alternate version. Our core book for the half-term is 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. All the staff in Team EO would like to wish our children and families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
We hope you all enjoy spending time with your loved ones and are looking forward to welcoming you back in new year! This week we have continued to enjoy lots of festive activities. We started the week listening to the story ‘We’re Going on a Elf Chase’ and we have enjoyed listening to lots of different Christmas stories throughout the week such as ‘The Nutcracker’, ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ and ‘We’re Going on a Present Hunt’. Our learning activities have included getting creative and making a stable with baby Jesus, writing Christmas cards to send to our friends and in our funky fingers area we have been practising our cutting skills by cutting along different shaped lines! We have also been busy finishing our cards and calendars which we hope that you like! On Monday afternoon, we held a Christmas Craft afternoon and it was lovely to see so many grown-ups come along and craft alongside their child! The children thoroughly enjoyed having their special people in school to enjoy the festive activities with them. We hope you enjoyed it too. On Wednesday afternoon we had our Christmas party in our classroom – oh, what fun we had! We started our party by tucking into our delicious party food at dinner time we had – a sandwich, pizza slice, sausage roll, cucumber, pepper, carrot sticks and a chocolate bun! When we got back into class we dove straight into our party games. We played pass the parcel, musical statues and then we sat in a circle and in the middle of the circle were cups with Freddo’s in. We had to bounce or throw the ball into the cup to win our cup for juice and our Freddo! Our was successful and we persevered until we had got the ball in. We ended our party by sitting down with juice and popcorn and watching ‘Stickman’. In Literacy, Year 1’s started the week holding and writing a sentence. On Wednesday they compose their own sentence about Zog and on Thursday they presented it to Team CH. In Maths, our Year 1 children have been recapping this terms’ learning through fun Christmas activities – we have counted objects, filled in missing numbers and used the equality and inequality symbols to compare numbers within 100. Our Reception children have represented 4 in different ways on a die frame, used their fingers to represent 6 as ‘5 and a bit’, used double dice frames to represent 6 as 5 and 1 more and seen that 5 and ‘2 more’ make 7. In Geography, to conclude our learning on “What’s it like in different parts of the UK?”, we began by identifying the different continents that the United Kingdom and Mexico lie on. We then moved on to comparing the similarities and differences between Tocuaro and Wombwell. We looked at the population of each place, discussed the weather and then looked at the human and physical features!
We have also talked about our route to the nature reserve and we have used the following direction words: down, through, across and up. We have been working hard to practise singing and signing for our amazing nativity play over the last few weeks and were very excited to perform it to you on Wednesday afternoon! Our nativity was a fun and exciting way for us learn about the Christmas story,
Our hard work and enthusiasm shone through and we had an amazing time performing it. We hope that our special people from home who came to watch it enjoyed it and felt just as proud as all the Team CW and Team EO staff did of the Rainbows and Sunshines. Here we are in our costumes - we looked brilliant! We are sure you will agree! This week our focus question was “What is the nativity?”. We know that the nativity tells the story of the birth of Baby Jesus and that this is what we celebrate at Christmas. We learnt that Christmas is celebrated by Christians. We listened carefully to ‘The Christmas Story’ and compared it to our nativity performance. We spoke about how our nativity tells the Christmas story through reading, singing and signing. We had an amazing time performing our nativity to our special people and I think you will agree we were absolutely incredible! This weeks’ independent learning activities have linked to Christmas. In our funky finger area we have been creating paper chains, in the painting area we have been printing with our fingers to add baubles to the Christmas tree template and in the creative area we have been colouring and sticking onto star and angel templates which we are sending to St Mary’s Church and they are going to hang them from the ceiling in the church! In our writing area we have been writing letters to Santa using the toy catalogue to help us and we have posted these in our letterbox then Buddy has been taking them to Santa each night. We have also been practising writing simple CVC words linked to Christmas! In Literacy, our Year 1 children were hooked into their new unit of writing with our text driver ‘Zog’ the children listened carefully to the story and were able to join in with the repeated refrains and phrases. We were able to answer simple questions about the text. We know that in this unit that our audience is Team CH and our purpose is to compose a sentence to read aloud to them. In Maths, our Reception children started the week learning to use time language including day, night, today, tomorrow, morning, afternoon, before and after. We then showed the numbers to 5 on our fingers, learnt to see that 5 can be partitioned into 4 and 1 and 3 and 2, explored ways to partition a set of 5 and explained what the parts are and used what they know about 5 to work out a hidden number. In Geography, we have learnt about the village of Tocuaro, Mexico. We learnt that Mexico lies on the continent of North America and we were able to locate Mexico on a map of North America. We learnt that Tocuaro, Mexico has a population of 600, it has 3 shops and 1 church that is pink! We know that these are human features. We identified that in Tocuaro the physical features are mountains and the lake. In Science, we carried out an investigation into ‘Do objects move the same on all surfaces?’. We started by predicting what we thought might happen then shared our ideas with our talk partner and then we came up with a class prediction. We predicted that the object will not travel the same on all surfaces because some may be rough and other may be smooth. We carried out our investigation and recorded how far the car travelled with one small push on each surface and then identified the surface that the car travelled furthest on. This was the plastic. We then worked as a team to conclude our investigation. We concluded that objects do not move the same on all surfaces. The car did not travel the same distance on all the surfaces because some were rough and some were smooth. We know from our learning last week that the resistance is greater on a rough surface and therefore the object will travel less.
In Literacy, Year 1 children have worked hard to hold sentences ensuring they are punctuated correctly with a capital letter and full stop. On Wednesday we composed our own sentences about what the tiger was doing and on Thursday we enjoyed our tea party with our favourite teddy where we read them our wonderful sentences! We continue to work hard practising our letter formation – please ensure your child is practising at home (starting and finishing in the correct place). In Maths, for our Year 1 children it has been assessment week and they have completed a 15-mark reasoning paper – they have made Miss Overton super proud! We have also been learning to reason about the location of numbers to 20 on a number line. Children know that 5 is located halfway between 0 and 10 and therefore 15 is located halfway between 10 and 20 as they both have 5 ones. The children have worked hard on locating the correct position of numbers on number lines and explaining how they know that it goes there! Our Reception children have continued to recognise and order numerals from 1-5, match numerals to quantities in order, built towers in order from 1-5 squares, seen the staircase pattern and recognised that each number is 1 more and represented staircase patterns in different ways, knowing that each new ‘step’ is 1 more than the last. Our Art learning this week has linked closely to our learning on rainbows! This week we have revisited colour mixing and looked at the work of Kandinsky. We know that Kandinsky was a Russian painter. When we looked at his painting we could identify that he had used circles and squares to create his painting as well primary and secondary colours! I am sure you will agree that we did a fantastic job at recreating the work of Kandinsky. In Science we have been learning about resistance and friction. We know that resistance is a force that slows down a moving objects and that friction occurs when two things rub against each other. The children experimented with cars and two different surfaces and now know that when the surface is smooth the resistance is less and the further the car will travel. They also know that when the surface is rough the resistance is more and the less the car will travel.
