Yesterday, our Reception children participated in their first 'Time to Talk' session. This is a programme to develop oral and social interaction skills.
The children were introduced to 'Ginger Bear' who shared his listening rules - they are:
The children worked hard to follow these rules as Miss Hanson read them a short passage about Ginger before she asked them questions to test their listening skills! The children did a fantastic job as they were able to recall where Ginger bear lives, who he lives with and what her friend was called. We then made a puppet of one of the characters we met today. We tried really hard to hold our pencil with the "perfect pencil grip" and to colour within the lines. Next we listened carefully to the poem "Teddy Bear Teddy Bear". We are looking forward to our next session next week where we will continue to develop our listening and turn-taking skills.

This week our learning has been focused around the question “What makes a good friend?”. Our book of the week was “Rainbow Fish” and we discussed how the Rainbow Fish and his friends felt throughout the story. The children were pleased that Rainbow Fish turned into a good friend and shared his scales! The children have been trying really hard all week to be good friends - we are so proud of them. After we learnt to name the 3 primary colours last week, this week we have explored what happens when we mix them. We have practised a song called “Mixing Colours” to the tune of ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ to help us remember how to make the secondary colours – can your child tell you which primary colours make purple, green and orange? We have also discussed the ways in which we are the same and different to our friends. Our activities this week included printing with celery in the painting area, rolling the dice subitising the number of dots and carefully counting out the correct number of scales and in our funky finger area this week we have been making friendship bracelets for our friends! In RWI, Reception children have continued to practise oral blending through Fred Talk, they have been working hard to form taught letters/sounds correctly in books and our Y1 children have been accessing RWI groups with the rest of KS1 children at their appropriate level. In Literacy, Y1 children have continued to practise forming letters correctly and reading and writing tricky red words.
In Maths, Reception children have been focusing on counting, cardinality (the knowledge of how many things are in a set and the number name for that quantity) and ordinality. Our Y1 children have continued practising counting to 100 using a Gattegno chart. We have started our Science unit on materials – we been naming materials and describing their properties. Our Y1 children have accessed their second Computing lessons – they were able to identify the parts of a computer, log on and use the mouse to click and drag parts of jigsaw puzzles! Today was our first Feel Good Friday of the year and what fun we had! We took part in some Just Dance activities including A Pirate You Shall Be and the Dinosaur stomp! We had to carefully copy the different moves and be careful of those around us. Our next Feel Good Friday is in two weeks!
It was also Team EO's turn to have Mr Smith join us for our Incredible Us! time. Mr Smith had set up the dinner time equipment on the field for us to learn how to use correctly and safely. We started by listening carefully to Mr Smiths' instructions on how to use each piece of equipment. A huge focus of our session was sharing and turn-taking. We had lots of fun using the equipment - the hurdles and balancers were the most loved pieces of equipment. We look forward to being able to use these at dinner times and we are looking forward our next Incredible Us! session with Mr Smith. This week our learning has been focused around the question “What makes me a me?”, our book of the week has been “Super Dupa You” which is also our class book for this half-term. We have learnt about different body parts and that we have 5 senses – can your child remember what they are? Children have had the opportunity to paint self-portraits using mirrors to add their unique features. The children have continued to name primary colours and have been experimenting mixing them to see which secondary colour they make. Children have had the opportunity to make name collages and to draw around their foot with a friend to then measure with cubes to see who has the longest/shortest foot. Children have had the opportunity to use pattern tracing sheets to practise their pencil control and have accessed a fine motor game called “Feed the Bird” to strengthen their funky finger.
Reception children have been taught the first 5 RWI sounds ‘m’, ‘a’, ‘s’, ‘d’ and ‘t’. We have also continued to familiarise ourselves with the silent signals including "My turn your turn," "Team stop," "Turn to your partner" and "1..2..3." We use these within our daily learning throughout each day too. In Maths, we have been learning to subitise amounts to 3 (saying how many we see without counting), describing spatial patterns with 3 dots, representing quantities on our fingers in different ways and identifying sub-groups of 1, 2 and 3 within larger arrangements. Year 1 children have been practising our letter formation in Literacy ensuring we start and finish in the correct place – we will be continuing with this over the coming weeks. We have also been practising reading and writing tricky red words. In maths, we have been practising counting within 100 in different ways. We have completed our pre-unit assessment for Science and Geography. In our first Geography lesson we have learnt that there are four countries in the United Kingdom. We watched videos exploring the countries and have been able to identify each country on a map. Our Year 1 children accessed their first Computing lesson of the year too which was very exciting! We started by thinking about what the word ‘technology’ means. We then explored some different examples of technology that can be found within our classrooms such as computer, laptop, pencil, phone, pencil sharpener and scissors. We considered the purpose of each of these examples of technology using the stem sentences “It helps us to…”. Our first activity was to sort the images of different items into two groups ‘technology’ and ‘not technology’. As a class we were then shown pictures of different technology and we had to match them to the correct explanation of how that technology helps us. It has been lovely to meet all our new Reception starters this week and welcome them into our school and class and we have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming back our Year 1 children who have been absolute superstars!
This week we have been focusing on our transition into school - we have been getting used to our classroom, our teachers, teaching assistants and our routines. We have been accessing different areas of our classroom, exploring our outdoor area, we have been in the dinner hall and accessed the EYFS playground for dinner time play! We will transition next week into the big playground! Most importantly, we have been making new friends and we have discussed and decided what our classroom rules are going to be. The children have enjoyed several circle times this week where we took turns to share the fun things we had been up to in the holidays, tell our friends our favourite colour and our favourite food! The children waited really patiently to hold our circle time object and know that they can only speak when they are holding this object. We have done lots of Fred Talk this week through games and everyday routines and the children are becoming experts at oral blending! We have done lots of oral counting to 10 and to 20 using actions and we have worked hard to remember our stopping number. Year 1 children have been working on recalling number bonds of 5 using the stem sentence '5 is made of …. and …..'. The Year 1 children have also been introduced to the Caterpillar track game to support their mathematical learning in choosing time. We are now looking forward to diving into our phonics, Literacy, Maths, Geography, Science and Computing over the coming weeks. The staff in class are so proud of how the children have settled in - keep it up Sunshines! Photos will be added shortly once all permissions have been gained. What an amazing day our Reception new started and new Year 1 children have had in Team EO. Next year we will be Team EO – The Sunshines! I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting our youngest children and their parents and seeing how amazing our Year 1 children are going to be!
The Year 1’s started the day in assembly with Mr Fidment sharing the story ‘The Planet in a Pickle Jar’ which focused on difference, not taking people for face value and making a difference by accepting each other – allowing you to be yourself and stand out from the crowd! I then welcomed the children to Team EO and then the children got straight on with our first activity our ‘helping hands’. Each child had a picture of a hand and on each finger children identified someone in school who helps them. The children then decorated them and these will be displayed on our class doors next year so that all staff know which staff members/children best support individuals when they are not feeling okay. Our Reception children will complete these in September. Whilst the Year 1’s were hard at work our Reception children were happily exploring our learning environments inside and out! The children took part in lots of different activities such as painting and making models in our creative area, exploring in the home corner and play-dough area. Outside children were able to build in the construction area, explore the sand, water and mud kitchen areas and climb on our climbing frame and wall. We had such a lovely time that we didn’t want to leave! The Year 1 children were very excited watching short introductory videos to some of next years’ learning and I can tell that we are going to have such a fantastic year – they were so enthusiastic and kept saying “I love it” at the end of the videos! Year 1’s next job was to create “Me in a Jar” here the children drew pictures of the things that make them them – what they like and we are going to cut out photos of the children and they will be holding their jar – these will be displayed in the cloakroom from September. The Year 1’s also explored their new inside learning environment and spent some time in the more familiar outdoor environment! Each Reception session ended with me sharing the book “On the night of the shooting star” which was a book about friendships as we will all make new friends in September! The Year 1’s ended the day listening to several stories and singing some songs! Every Reception child will have received a story book to take home and keep at home to read with their parents and enjoy over the holidays. It has been lovely for all staff to meet our brand new Sunshines. We are all looking forward to welcoming you back in September so that we can get to know you more and do lots of wonderful learning together! Have a wonderful holiday and we can't wait to see you again in September! |
