This weeks line of inquiry has been "What's in the egg?". We started by listening to the story 'Am I Yours?' by Alex Latimer. Our Talk through Stories of the week has been 'Gigantosaurus'. We have learnt that dinosaurs are extinct because there are no more living members. We know that some dinosaurs were herbivores and that they had blunt and flat teeth. We know some dinosaurs were carnivores and their teeth were sharp! We learnt that dinosaurs lived in different places such as; wetlands, forests, desert, polar ices and the sea. Our learning activities have included; writing about what we can see in the dinosaur picture, using cotton buds to create a dandelion painting, creating a hatching dinosaur egg, exploring our dinosaur small world and adding spikes to dinosaurs by clipping on tiny pegs to work those finger muscles. We have enjoyed exploring the small world dinosaurs and learning their names. Reception have continued to access appropriate RWI groups and have worked with myself to complete assessments ready for next half-term - they have blown me away! In Literacy Year 1's have learnt about add the suffix -er to words and amazed me at how good they were at adding it to root words. We have also been practising spelling our common exception words and the days of the week. We have had a big focus on reading words using "special friends, Fred Talk, read the word". In Maths, Reception have found ways to partition a set of 5 and we have used what we know about 5 to work out a hidden number. They have also worked with myself to complete a variety of maths tasks relating to counting, comparison, patterns and recalling facts.
Our Year 1 children have been using their knowledge of addition facts within 10 to add within 20 and their knowledge of subtraction facts within 10 to subtract within 20. In Science, we have learnt that all creatures need air, food, shelter and water to survive. We have learnt to name a variety of large habitats including; rainforest, woodland, desert, ocean and polar ice and to name plants in some of these habitats such as orchid and coffee plant in the rainforest, cactus and tumble weed in the desert and dandelion, moss, grass, clover, conifer and shrubs in the woodlands.
