This week we have worked incredibly hard on recognising how numbers used to be formed as Roman Numerals. We spent time understanding the reason that we shifted towards our current number system, before working out the value of different numerals. From this we created and solved our own problems which required us to write in numerals, before calculating numbers up to 100.
In Literacy, we have been busy completing our writing liked to our whole class fairy tale. The class worked hard to ensure the story flowed and spent time developing ideas from our shared writing, before continuing independently. Next week, we will begin our redraft and edit process before producing our best work and celebrating our stories with Year 2. I am sure the class will be so eager to share their first independent write! Meanwhile, in topic this week, we have been looking and rivers and how they are formed. We spent time investigating the features of a river before moving towards looking at key European rivers and where these can be found on a map. The class are working hard to develop their maths skills in particular! Keep up the good work Team CB! Next week, we will be working hard to investigating experiments which link to States of Matter. Make sure you pop back to read about how we got on.

Here we are, once again Friday has quickly come around and its time to reflect on the productive week we have had.
This week in our Maths we have been working incredibly hard to secure our understanding of rounding numbers to the nearest 10/100 or 1000. This required the class to show confidence in their place value knowledge in order to identify which columns may change as a result of rounding. The class were fantastic at using the rule "5 or more add 1 to the number next door, 4 or less let it rest". They were able to confidently round up to 4 digit numbers to the specified value. Well done Team CB I am incredibly proud of the confidence and competence you are showing in your learning so soon into the academic year. Elsewhere, in Literacy we have been looking at traditional tales. We have looked at a range of different texts and the similarities and differences that they have before working to develop our understanding of how to incorporate descriptive language in our writing. We have focused specifically on expanded noun phrases and prepositional phrases as ways of including further information. In order to ensure we are ready to hit the ground running with writing our own tale next week, we have planned a class tale looking at the plot structure carefully to ensure it flows. Whilst I can't give much away currently, what you should know is that these will be fantastic - i'm sure! Check back next week to see what we get up to in our writing! How time flies when you’re having fun! How are we already at the end of the second week of learning? This week the class have worked their socks off and shown just what fantastic learners they are.
Whilst still keeping up with our three week Times Table Race, we have jumped straight in to looking at Place Value as part of our Maths unit. The class have been busy exploring the different value of digits based on their position in a number and did so with resounding success. We have also explored how to compare and order numbers, as well as using our knowledge of Place Value to support in finding 1000 more or less than a given number. Our understanding of Maths is really evident so keep up the hard work Team CB! In Literacy, we have started our new topic of Traditional Tales. The class have been tasked with identifying different tales that have originated from Europe, as this is the continent we are currently exploring as part of our Geography unit. From this, we have looked at a range of different tales, comparing their plot structures and key features, in order to help us establish our own Success Criteria for writing. The class were fantastic at recognising similarities in stories as well as subtle differences. From this we focussed on key SPAG features which would support us in our writing. In particular, we looked at expanded noun phrases to give further detail, as well as speech to illustrate thoughts of characters. Next week, we will move on to planning our own class tale before we develop this into what will be our first independent write. Elsewhere in our learning, we have been busy working hard in our PE sessions to develop our skills with accuracy when throwing and catching. The class responded really well to instructions and showed progress in their confidence when throwing or receiving the ball. We have also attended our second ukulele session, which was lovely to listen to and clear that the children are going to perform to a phenomenally high standard by the end of the year. In Science, we have started our new topic of States of Matter, where the class have been busy looking at particle formations and their properties to understand the differences in Solids, Liquids and Gases. Head back to our blog next week, where you can see what new things we have been learning. Welcome Back! For those of you who are visiting the class blog for the first time, let me explain how it works. Over the course of the year, I will aim to do regular check ins to share what exciting things Team CB have been up to. We will cover a wide range of topics and share exciting news and plans as they arise. So in true Team CB style, here is a run down of the week so far.
What a wonderful first week back to school. I could not be more impressed with how the children have settled in and the fantastic attitude that they have shown towards their learning. They have really strove to meet my high expectations and I could not be more proud of their conscientious nature and willingness to learn. This week we have focussed on introducing expectations around how our new classroom will function and began to embed new routines, class seats and such like. The children have all responded really well! In addition to this, we have been working really hard in our Maths, the first three weeks back of school are renowned for being the whole school focus on times tables and the class have worked so hard already on completing their Times Tables Race and improving their score each day. Well done Spectacular Space Cadets! We have also been practicing ways to learn new times tables including our 6 and 7 x tables and we are already picking these up with confidence. Meanwhile, we have also worked hard in Literacy refreshing our reading skills and beginning to practice our new handwriting approach. The class have shown how well they can recall information learned last year, and we are already beginning to build upon this knowledge as we have explored generating Higher Order Thinking Questions and response stems. Next week, will mark the start of our new writing sequence where we will begin to look at traditional European tales. Be sure to check back next week for an update. Like that wasn’t already enough, we have also been busy in our first Ukulele session – the class loved it and are so keen to get started learning their new instrument! Well done Team CB – keep up the fantastic work! We have also began looking at Europe and the countries it is made up of. Sometime back in Summer, the class advised they would like to create a patchwork map to kick-start their learning so that is exactly what we have done – I will aim to upload a few snaps of our creative bunch hard at work! As you can see, it has already been a week full of wonderful learning and I can’t wait to see even more of this continue as we head into next week. Be sure to pop back and see what we have been up to! Miss Baxter |
