How has the first half term of the year already made its way around? I cannot quite fathom how quickly the last eight weeks have gone. Team CB have made such an excellent start to this school year and I could not be more proud of the progress they have made in their learning. They truly have given their all and excelled in so much of what they have been tasked with. I wish all the children a restful. happy half term and hope they enjoy the chance to relax after such a busy and productive start to the year. I am thoroughly looking forward to seeing them all again next week and I can't wait to hear what they have been up to!
Meanwhile, in our Maths, we have concluded our topic of addition this week. The class have shown such fantastic effort in their understanding of addition and should be so very proud. When we return to school, our next unit will focus on subtraction. I am certain they will be every bit as successful as they have been with their learning so far! In Literacy this week we have finally produced and published our travel brochure. The class were fantastic in working hard to use all their learned persuasive techniques to make their reading as compelling as possible. It has been a pleasure to read them and it is already apparent just how much progress the class has made since the start of the year! Well done Team! When we return from the holidays, we will be jetting off to Italy in the next stop of our European tour, where the class will learn how to write instructions for an authentic Italian pizza. I am sure a few tasty treats will be making their way home! Enjoy the break ahead and I look forward to another jam-packed half term filled with lots of exciting events!

This week has been a very busy week for Team CB. We have spent time beginning to gather information to support in writing our travel guide to Spain. As a class we worked hard to develop our understanding of features of travel guides, before beginning to consider fact and opinions and how these play vital roles in persuasive writing. The whole team worked really hard to grasp the concept of writing an opinion and presenting it in the style of fact. They certainly had me convinced! Following this, we then began to plan out the way our information would be presented. Check back next week as we put pen to paper and fetch our fabulous reviews to life!
Meanwhile, in Maths this week we have been busy learning all their is to know about addition. We worked on developing our understanding of procedural variation through representing addition calculations in the form of a bar model. The children were using lots of apparatus to help them, including cuisenaires and the Ipad Manipulatives app to support their learning. They were fantastic in identifying which elements were parts and wholes. We used this knowledge later in the week too when we investigated addition and subtraction pyramids. All staff in Team CB were so impressed with how speedily the class recognised when they needed to add and when they needed to subtract to fill in the missing values. Well done Spectacular Space Cadets! Meanwhile, we participated in French Day this week throughout school. In Team CB we worked super hard to learn all about clothing and fashion. We began by investigating french colours, before using this to describe our clothing and appearance. The children were so engaged throughout the day and so proud of the work they had produced. It was lovely to see them so engaged and trying new things. The croissants were delicious also!! In another busy week, I am once again beaming with pride at the way our team continues to conduct themselves. I am so impressed. Keep up the hard work!!! As another week draws to a close, I once again reflect on how hard the class has worked this week and the clear progress they are already making.
This week was the start of our new maths unit centred around addition. As a team we have explored the concept in many different ways, including using place value counters and grids to support in the process of addition, as well as using part whole models to represent this. The class showed great understanding of procedural variation and were able to spot how different representations were constructed. They have then began to look at applying their reasoning and problem solving skills to word problems to further reinforce their skills in context. I am so proud of how hard they have worked and the understanding they are developing around number. In our Literacy this week we have participated in a Spanish themed session where the children were trying all things Spanish. The reason for this, is that this week the children's writing focus is on creating a travel guide to Spain. In order to be successful writers we created an immersive learning opportunity where they researched Spain and its heritage, took part in Flamenco dancing and tasted a range of Spanish cuisine such as paella, patatas bravas and tapas. We then pulled out what makes a good travel brochure and used this to inform our success criteria for writing. Next week, we will unpick some of the grammar concepts we could include before applying this to our own writing. I can't wait for you to see the finished result! In Science this week we have been busy conducting many experiments. We began the week by exploring the inquiry question "Does gas weigh anything?" We then created our own experiment with fizzy pop to prove that gas indeed does have a weight. The children were thoroughly engaged throughout and showed great knowledge of the processes by the end of the session. We also created our own water cycles in a bag this week as part of our learning. The class looked at the processes involved and how evaporation and condensation had links to changing states of matter. The recognising how liquid can turn to gas and back to liquid again using the heating and cooling process. Check back in with us next week to see what else we get up to! This week the class have been working incredibly hard on their maths skills. We have now completed our unit of place value and roman numerals and the class have shown that they have some excellent understanding around the learning they have done. Keep an eye out for our maths next week as we will be moving on to a new topic of addition using formal written methods.
Elsewhere, in our Literacy we have been busy completing our published writing of our own traditional tale. The class were so eager to share these and did brilliantly well in working hard to implement our new handwriting policy. We have several pieces now up on display in our Handwriting Heroes section of the classroom - well done Team CB you should be so proud of your hard work. Meanwhile, we have been busy working hard in other areas of the Curriculum this week. We have been showing plenty of progress in ukulele with the confidence we now have in playing different chords and beginning to create songs. In our Art work, we have used our watercolour artwork of different European landmarks, to inspire the 3D models we have started to build. The class have shown excellent enthusiasm for this project and I cannot wait to see the end result. Pop back next week to see what else we have been up to. |
