This week has been yet another busy one! Starting with Maths, our class worked hard to consolidate their knowledge of angles up to and including a straight line angle. From this, we began exploring how to estimate angles using our knowledge of the right angle. We concluded the week by looking specifically at 2d shapes, their names, properties and how to classify them, before looking more closely at the angles they possess.
In our Literacy, this week we put pen to paper as we drew upon all the skills and knowledge we had developed over the last few weeks to help begin writing our myths. The class' contribution was fantastic with so many high quality ideas and a range of different suggestions and for how our myth could unfold. Over the course of the week we wrote the entire piece which is ready to be edited, upleveled and then published, before our battle with Year 5. In our afternoons, we have been working hard on our Science, as part of Science week. We were lucky enough as a school to have a Science show on Wednesday, which the children absolutely loved and learned many new things from. In our own learning, we had been classifying plants as well as animals using our knowledge of classification keys. I would like to take this opportunity to say what a fantastic attitude towards learning the children have had! I am so very proud of each and every one of them!!! This week has been absolutely jam-packed of exciting opportunities for our learners in Team CB. This week in Maths the class have been busy working on their understanding of angles. The week began with an angle hunt where children needed to deduce the type of angle shown; be than an acute, obtuse or right angle. The class were fantastic at this and quickly demonstrated a fantastic knowledge of how many degrees represented each type of angle. From this, the class moved to more problem solving tasks, involving finding missing angles from a straight line and comparing and classifying angles appropriately. They will further develop their understanding next week, before beginning to look at angles within shapes. Elsewhere, in Literacy, the class have been working hard to develop their knowledge of grammar concepts to support their writing. They have focussed on the use of direct speech, fronted adverbials and the possessive apostrophe to name just a few. Once they had learnt and applied new skills, the class spent the final session of the week working to construct a class of a new Viking Myth. The children were incredibly eager to include Thor and Heimdall in the battle against the mighty giants. I can't wait to see these stories come to life over the coming week. In addition to this, this week has been a highly important week for Year 4 as a whole. On Tuesday. the whole year group came together to participate in a Titanic themed history day. The purpose of this was to contrast modern history with ancient history, and develop a better understanding of events at the time. I could not have been more proud of the fantastic attitude towards learning that the year displayed. They were engaged throughout and especially loved the Science based investigation into making a more resilient boat which would not sink, They ended the day with a fountain of new knowledge, inspired by their interview with Milvina Dean (the last survivor of the Titanic). Why not take a look at the photos below to see how the day unfolded? During this week, the class have been busy working hard to develop their understanding of statistics. They have been looking at different ways of recording information for example, pictograms, bar charts, line graphs and then interpreting information from these. The class have shown excellent commitment and worked really hard to develop their understanding of how to construct these.
In Literacy, this week we have started our new focus of Norse Myths. The week began with the children discovering a poster declaring that Thor's hammer had been stolen. The children looked throughout the classroom in search of it but it could not be found. Eventually. Loki arrived to class carrying the hammer but would not explain how he had come to acquire it. We then read the Norse myth, Thor and the Stolen hammer which had revealed that Thrym the ice giant had stolen it. The class spent the week exploring different characters, setting and plot features which are typical of Norse myths to inform their writing in the coming weeks. They have also shared different Viking sagas to help develop their understanding. Meanwhile, this week in topic the class completed a scavengar hunt where parts of a longship had been discovered. The class used their inferencing skills to decide why the elements were important and what they could relate to. This was then reconstructed, before the class modelled what it would be like to be in a longship. They used oars to work in time with one another and sail in time with one another. The class used their knowledge to record the boats features and their importance. We have also been busy in our ICT this week, the class have began to devise their own algorithms to create a Viking Raid using the computing software Scratch. This will be a project which runs over the course of a few weeks and will greatly support the class in learning how to code, debug and problem solve. We will keep you regularly updated with our progress. Finally, this week was Week 2 of swimming and what a strong start the class have had. They have shown excellent commitment to learning this new skill, and have followed instructions with confidence and the determination to succeed. I am so proud of them all as learners! Keep up your fantastic work ethic Year 4! Well, what a first week back it has been! Team CB have been so incredibly busy this week with lots of new learning taking place.
This week, Team CB have completed their Spring assessments and I could not be more proud of the progress they have shown. What an excellent job the class have all done at learning new skills this year! They should all be so very proud of themselves as their reading, writing, SPAG and maths have developed fantastically since our last checkpoint. Elsewhere, this week the class have moved away from Anglo Saxons and started to explore the Vikings. The class received a visit from a Viking who was planning to raid Lindisfarne Monastery. Through hot seating, the class deduced why this was happening and how it affected the Anglo Saxon citizens. Children generated their own lines of inquiry before developing an understanding of who the Vikings were and when they arrived in Britain. This week has also been a very exciting week as it was the first of our Swimming sessions. The class absolutely loved swimming and were brilliant at listening to the expectations given, following instructions and trying really hard to master new skills. I cannot wait to see how the children progress over the coming months! I'm sure by the end of the Summer they will all be absolutely brilliant swimmers! Keep up the great work Year 4. Be sure to check back next week to see what Team CB have been getting up to, we will have a creative writing session inspired by Harry Potter, as well as lots of exciting events centred around World Book Day! Another half term has flown by and I could not be more thrilled at the level of commitment the class have shown towards their learning this half term. They have met any challenge head on, and shown great determination in the desire to succeed. I feel that as we come back from half term, I will be greeted with the same enthusiasm and engagement towards learning.
This week, we have been busy concluding our learning of Area in maths. We have investigated closely how area can be calculated through counting squares, creating shapes by given areas and comparing areas. The class really enjoyed the work they did around area and now have a really clear understanding of the difference between area and perimeter. During the first week back, Team CB will showing everything they know when we take on a Maths Reasoning and Arithmetic paper. I'm sure the whole team will do amazingly well. Meanwhile, in Literacy we have spent this week further understanding some key SPAG concepts. As a team we have explored determiners, paragraphs, plural and possessive as well as fronted adverbials to name but a few. Spectacular Space Cadets truly were superstars, giving it their all in what can be some tricky concepts to master! As in Maths, the first week back our superstars will undertake a SPAG and reading challenge to see what we have remembered! Good luck! Elsewhere, this week we have also been learning about Anglo Saxon superstitions. Did you know that the Anglo Saxons were pagan and believed in more than one god? Our class have been researching such information to compile their own fact files. I know these are going to be simply fantastic to read! It is with that, that I wish all the class a very restful half term and hope they have chance to relax and enjoy time with friends and family. Please remember, Year 4 will begin swimming after half term so make sure they come equipped with all they may need! What a busy week we have had in Team CB! This week in our Maths, we completed our learning linked to finding the perimeter, before we moved on to investigating area. The class hand very hands on experiences, where they used resources to understand that area of a shape is the amount of space taken up by the shapes surface. From this, the class then investigated finding the area through counting squares, and understanding the importance of recording their answer with cm2. Next week, we will continue to master the concept of area.
In our Literacy this week, we have been fetching our writing to life from our Anglo Saxon newspaper reports. The class have been working really hard, to edit their writing and uplevel the content within it. They then published their piece and delivered a flurry of newspapers to the school to share the earth-shattering news. I'm sure the children of park street were very much shocked to hear what was currently happening! In our Science this week we headed down to the nature reserve in order to complete an invertebrate hunt using a classification key. The class were fantastic at using the key and assessing the questions to determine what species they could have. The class certainly came back with a buzz about them and were eager to share the types of invertebrate they had found and what classification they belonged to. In our history, the class have used different drama techniques to support in their understanding of the structure of Anglo Saxon society. They worked their way from National structures, to the roles assigned within villages and why all roles were vital to supporting one another. Check in with us next week to see what we get up to in our final week before half term. This week we have started a new unit of Maths linked to measurement and perimeter. The class began the week by measuring various different items and recognising how to use their ruler properly, as well as reasing to the nearest milimeter. From this the class worked hard to broaden their understanding of units of measurement and looked closely at conversion between mm and cm, cm and m and even m and km. The class saw this represented in many different ways and worked hard to use their reasoning and problem solving skills. For the latter half of the week, we have looked more closely at what "perimeter" is and how we calculate it. The class were great at providing a working definition and really clarifying their understanding of how to find it. Well done Team CB. Next week, we will be moving on to understanding the difference between area and perimeter and how we can find the area of a shape.
Meanwhile, in Literacy this week we have worked hard in the writing process to construct our newspaper reports about the Anglo Saxon invasion. The class have worked so hard to develop their language choice and a few of Miss Baxter's favourites were; 'scoping out the surroundings', 'imminent attack' and 'in the face of fear'. Next week we will develop the editing process to ensure that what we have produced is high quality before our publish and present aspect. In Science this week we have continued to refine our understanding of classification keys and how to construct them through the game of Guess Who. Next week we will use our knowledge to use a classificaiton key to determine different invertebrates which can be found in our nature reserve. I wonder what we might find? Did you know the Anglo Saxons to this very day influence England? The class have been busy exploring how place names signify the existence of the Anglo Saxons. In our topic learning, the class looked at suffixes which were commonly given by Anglo Saxons and explored which towns and cities could be rooted within Anglo Saxon history. From this, they they compared modern day Britain with Anglo Saxon Britain to determine which kingdom they were from. Check back next week for a further update on our learning journey! News just in! King Vortigern has expressed his grave concern over rumors that the Anglo Saxons are planning on invading. That's right! This week in Literacy, the class have received a very important message from the King asking for their help to spread the news. As such, the class decided the only way to do this was by writing a newspaper article and delivering these to the citizens of Britain to share this unexpected information. The class have worked really hard to begin to understand what makes a good newspaper, by identifying features and functions before using this to establish their own success criteria for writing. Following this, the class have worked on refining key skills such as accurately applying the rules of speech (we know how important it is to get a quote from the King himself!) before beginning to plan their writing. Be sure to check in with us to see how the writing process goes next week.
Meanwhile, in Maths the class have worked tirelessly to secure their knowledge and confidence in applying the appropriate procedure to solve problems linked to the four operations. I could not be more proud of the progress that they have made this week. A huge thumbs up from me Team CB! In our topic, we have been investigating the chronology of Anglo Saxon history and understanding where this sits in relation to history overall. The class were fantastic at identifying key events, as well as researching other local, national and international events which took place at the time. We also explored how the Anglo Saxons arrived into Britain and how the country was split into the seven kingdoms as a result. Be sure to check back with us next week to see what new learning we uncover! In our Science, we have been busy trying to understand the classification system. We used Guess Who! to help recognise the way different things can be classified and created our own classification keys. Next week we will be taking this knowledge outdoors when we go on our own invertebrate hunt! Check back soon for more updates. |
