This week Team CB have been working hard across all aspects of their learning. We have been really busy concluding our learning in Maths around division. As a team we have investigated word problems linked to division, as well as ways in which we can reason practically based on what we already know. We have then used this is a series of problem solving situations, such as competitive games where the children had to use their resources to make the highest or lowest possible total. The mathematical discussion which came from this was fantastic, with the children thinking really carefully about the way the dividend and divisor influenced the answer. Next week we will be consolidating our learning on all 4 operations.
In our Literacy, we continued with our work on our news broadcasts. This week saw the children begin to write their broadcast script and think critically about the questions they asked in their interview in order to get the best response. Once we had produced our scripts, we worked in small groups to begin to fetch the script to life. The class worked in teams of 4, taking on different roles such as the news-reporters, interviewer and interviewee. We then recorded the videos, edited them and played them to share our news! The class really enjoyed this unit and the work they created was fantastic! Well done Spectacular Space Cadets. Elsewhere, in topic this week we have completed our work around the Sutton Hoo discovery, Did you know that the artefacts found there suggest it could have been a King who was buried? The class were so good at using their inference skills to deduce what the artefacts told us! In our science, we continued with our new unit of Classification and Variation. The class investigated the 7 life processes needed to keep us alive, as well as begin to look a types of living things, including vertebrates and invertebrates and how we group them. Pop back next week to see what else we get up to in our learning!

Welcome back! I hope you all had a very restful and happy Christmas with those who matter most. The class have come back to school with excellent enthusiasm for learning this week and a sparkling attitude! Excellent work Spectacular Space Cadets!
This week we have started to look at the final of our four operations, division. The class worked practically to explore the concept of division through use of sharing with place value counters. This enabled them to understand terms such as dividend and divisor and how these were involved in the division process. Once the class felt more confident with this, we looked more closely at the formal written method for division. The class picked this up quickly and felt confident around tackling fluency based problems. Next week, we will be looking at how we can start to reason and problem solve involving division. Elsewhere, in Literacy we have started a new unit on News. The class investigated a newspaper article about a hoard of Anglo Saxon coins which had been discovered and were challenged with retelling this in a news broadcast. We looked at similarities and differences between the two forms of media. This enabled us to establish a success criteria for writing, before we began to plan our own structure. Next week, the class will work to create their own broadcast script before videoing, editing and publishing their work to the whole school in an assembly. I am so very excited to see the end product! In our topic sessions, we have now moved towards a history based focus. Our theme this half term is the Anglo Saxons. To kick start our learning, yesterday the class completed an archaeological dig linked to Sutton Hoo, where they found various artefacts and had to infer what they could be, who they were for and why they were used. The class' verbal reasoning was fantastic, with well thought-through, refined answers. Next session they will use secondary sources of evidence to support in researching exactly what their primary evidence is and the story that it tells. Check back next week for further updates! How has it already flown around to Christmas? This term seems to have gone by in the blink of an eye and with so much keeping us busy, I am so very proud of all the hard work Team CB have shown this term. It seems such a long time ago since the class entered Year 4, albeit only 15 weeks ago, yet the growth, maturity and confidence they have developed is clear to see.
This week, we have been busy working on our new maths unit around co-ordinates. The class have been busy getting to grips with what co-ordinates are by reading and plotting them to create simple polygons. From this, we took the festive theme onboard and created our own festive images using co-ordinates to help us. From this, we moved on to looking at translation and the ways that shapes can be moved and how we can articulate this. When we return post Christmas we will be tackling division using the formal written method. Elsewhere, this week we have drawn our topics to a close, including our Science unit on electricity and our Geography topic on Europe. To mark the progress we have made in our Science topic, the class each created their own fully functioning torch. They used their knowledge of creating circuits to help them, and included a switch to ensure the torch was used only when needed. In our Geography topic, we have concluded by looking at some on the dangers that physical processes pose on humans, as well as considering climate zones and how these contribute to such processes. When we settle back into learning in January, our topic moves away from Geography, and our focus becomes History. We will be closely exploring Anglo Saxon and Viking Britain and how they came to settle here. Make sure you pop back to see how we kickstart the topic! All that is left to say, is I wish you all a very restful half term and look forward to seeing you all in 2020! What an incredible week it has been in Team CB. This week we have welcomed Mr Davison our student teacher who will be working with the class until the end of March. The children have all been really welcoming and he is so excited to get stuck in and involved.
As well as greeting new faces, we have also been busy hosting our highly anticipated parent play. The class have worked so hard in rehearsals and it has been lovely to see them fetch their hard work to life. Parents and carers we so impressed with their fantastic performance and the children loved every minute of sharing such a special celebration with their loved ones. As I think about all the effort that has gone into our learning this term, I could not be more proud of the steely determination and resilience that the class has continued to show. Meanwhile, in Maths, we have been working hard to round off our understanding of multiplication. The class have now got a good understanding around when it is appropriate to multiply and how they can do this effectively. We have included reasoning and problem solving within our learning and I'm sure they will be putting it to good use come Christmas when they are counting presents under the tree. In our Science this week we have been exploring the function of the switch in an electrical circuit and why it is important. The class created their own switch before testing its effectiveness by placing it at different points within the circuit. Next week is our final week before the Christmas holidays. It is, as always, a busy one for the class. We will be taking a trip to a local church hall to sing carols, hosting our annual Christmas party, and of course awaiting our highly anticipated pantomime. Check back later to see how we all got on. With only two more teaching weeks until Team CB have chance to take a well earned rest, we have been working really hard to ensure we are getting the most from our learning. This week, we started a new Literacy unit based on script writing. As is tradition, next week Team CB have their annual Christmas production to put on for parents. With this in mind, the class have been working hard understanding the features of play scripts and how to format them, ready for using the skills to create our own. We have story boarded our ideas to create a drama peice to present to our parents next week. The class are mightily excited! I must say, our audition process was incredible and the talent that those children have was clearly evident! I cannot wait for parents to see the hard work the children have put in!
Meanwhile, in Maths we have been busy mastering multiplication. The week began with the children looking at multiples, factors and products. They were particularly good at spotting factor pairs of a number, We then moved on to looking at multiplying and dividing numbers by 10,100 and 1000. The use of practical learning tools really helped the children to see their learning before moving to an abstract form. To conclude our week, we have started to look at using the formal written method to help us learn how to calculate larger problems. Check in with us next week when we will be able to report back on the success of our parent performance in Literacy, as well as the next stage of learning in our Maths. Dear Diary,
This week has been such an enjoyable week in Team CB. We have been full of enthusiasm for learning and have created some absolutely fantastic diary extracts about Christmas as a child. The class have been so incredibly immersed in their writing and have produced some fantastic work as a result. We have edited our drafts and will spend time publishing these in best before storing them in a time capsule for the children to open at the end of their Park Street journey. Elsewhere, in Maths we have started our new unit of multiplication and have made a good start to investigating the new content. The class have looked at multiples as well as multiplying by 10 and 100. We will be continuing this learning next week, as we begin to look at formal written methods for multiplication and exploring factors. In our Science this week we have been busy investigating what makes a circuit complete and incomplete. We used the electrical equipment to create our own circuits and test their effectiveness. We have also explored the concepts of "conductors" and "insulators". The class were fantastic at making links to types of materials which would conduct and those which would not. A truly brilliant scientific inquiry full of inquisitive minds and questions. Next week we will be moving on to a new Literacy unit which closely follows on from our last theme of Christmas. It should conclude with a wonderful performance for parents the following week. Check back for more updates then. This week has been a busy week throughout school as it has been our Assessment week. The class have worked so very hard putting in to action everything that they have learned this year. They have shown some fantastic resilience and determination at tackling any challenge that has been asked of them and I could not be more proud.
Whilst assessment week has been going on, the children have also started their new writing unit. The class were tasked with creating their own Christmas diary so that they can capture the feelings they have about Christmas as a child and look back on it fondly as an adult. The enthusiasm for completing this work was simply wonderful to see. The class are so eager to put pen to paper next week and bring their diaries to life, but for this week we have been busy unpicking features, looking at good examples of diaries and generating language linked to our topic. Be sure to check back next week and see how we are getting on. This week, we have also been busy investigating our new Science unit of electricity. The class have been busy learning about the different forms electricity can occur, as well as investigating how the atom carries electrical charge through free electrons. The class were fabulous at recreating this in a drama piece consisting of a nucleus made up with protons, neutrons and electrons! We are excited to see where this learning takes us next week. We have also been busy continuing to explore our geography topic of Europe this week. We have looked specifically at the countries which make up the UK, Zooming in closer. we then investigated urban areas within the UK and used digital maps and the zoom function to locate and name such places. Another busy week in Team CB as always. Keep up your fantastic efforts Spectacular Space Cadets. This week has been a week full of important learning. From subtraction to fronted adverbials and anti-bullying week to Children in Need. The children have learned many new things and are confident in understanding their importance.
In Maths this week, we rounded off our work on subtraction. The class worked hard to consider how to subtract across zeros, how to solve any form of subtraction problem through varied fluency, applied their learning to reasoning and problem solving questions and became the expert in supporting others in subtraction. All that, is to name just a few of the things we have been up to this week. Next week is assessment week, so the children will be working to show just how much they have retained so far this year, although having seen the fantastic accomplishments they have gone on to achieve so far this year, I have no doubt they will do a fantastic job. Check back to see where our math goes next, following next weeks busy schedule. In Literacy. we have been concluding our instructions this week, as well as beginning to look at some of the Year 3 and 4 spelling and grammar skills. We have worked hard to develop our understanding of prefixes and how these can change the meaning of a word. We have also explored what 'synonyms' and 'antonyms' are! As mentioned above, next week is assessment week, but be sure to check in and see how we are getting on as the children have a lovely piece of writing to do based around a Christmas diary extract! I really hope it will be a piece of work they will cherish long into the future! :) This week we have also welcomed Mr Smith to our class. He will be based in Team CB on Thursday and Friday mornings. The class have already made him feel very welcome, and as our Sports Coach he has enjoyed getting to know the children and their talents immensely. Beyond the core curriculum, across school we have been driving home very important messages this week around Anti-bullying. As it is anti- bullying week, the class have thought carefully around this years theme "Power for Good" and created their own acrostic poems which serve as a reminder for how we can always use our kindness to care for others. The poems are lovely and I cannot wait to see them on display! Today also marks Children In Need campaign day. The class all look simply splendid in PJs or Pudsey clothes in an effort to raise money for children across the UK! Some very important messages that I am sure our children have loved been involved in! Pop back next week to see how we are getting on in Team CB! Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely break.
Team CB have settled back into learning really well and have had a busy week of learning. In our Maths, we have moved on to our new unit of subtraction. The class started the week investigating what subtraction was and what language we knew which related to this. We then used the Manipulatives App to help gain an understanding of subtraction and how this happens. We explored regrouping and the need to exchange when the bottom digit is greater than the top. From this, we moved into applying our visual understanding into showing this in the form of formal written methods. I was most impressed with how quickly the class picked up this skill. We will be working on subtraction in to next week also, but the class have already made promising strides in their learning, and I have every belief that they will go on to being super subtraction solvers! Elsewhere, in Literacy this week we have been visiting Italy as part of our learning. On Monday, the class followed verbal instructions to make an authentic Italian pizza. From this, we developed our focus for the week's writing - instructions. The class have worked hard to identify different features of instructions, as well as explore imperative verbs and adverbs. They have carefully planned the way instructions should be presented and have sequenced images to support in recalling the steps to baking a delicious pizza. Next week the children will conclude their instructions writing, when they write up in best their interpretation and provide these to Year 5 as an example of good instructions writing, before Year 5 create their own later this half term. In Science, we have concluded our learning around states of matter and will be moving on to our new unit of electricity as of next week. The class are already really excited about this as they know that they are going to be making their own fully-functioning torches! I can't wait to see the end result. Enjoy a restful weekend! Check back next week for further updates. How has the first half term of the year already made its way around? I cannot quite fathom how quickly the last eight weeks have gone. Team CB have made such an excellent start to this school year and I could not be more proud of the progress they have made in their learning. They truly have given their all and excelled in so much of what they have been tasked with. I wish all the children a restful. happy half term and hope they enjoy the chance to relax after such a busy and productive start to the year. I am thoroughly looking forward to seeing them all again next week and I can't wait to hear what they have been up to!
Meanwhile, in our Maths, we have concluded our topic of addition this week. The class have shown such fantastic effort in their understanding of addition and should be so very proud. When we return to school, our next unit will focus on subtraction. I am certain they will be every bit as successful as they have been with their learning so far! In Literacy this week we have finally produced and published our travel brochure. The class were fantastic in working hard to use all their learned persuasive techniques to make their reading as compelling as possible. It has been a pleasure to read them and it is already apparent just how much progress the class has made since the start of the year! Well done Team! When we return from the holidays, we will be jetting off to Italy in the next stop of our European tour, where the class will learn how to write instructions for an authentic Italian pizza. I am sure a few tasty treats will be making their way home! Enjoy the break ahead and I look forward to another jam-packed half term filled with lots of exciting events! |
