Knowing how many of you love animals. Just to let you know that Edinburgh Zoo is opening up its animal cams for children to go online and enjoy for free. Take a look! Although the pandas aren't half lazy :)
Whilst exploring a wide range of texts Team LL have been exploring personality, feelings and impressions of characters. We have been developing our summarising, inference and explanation skills. The focus of our learning this week has been ensuring that we support any points given with appropriate evidence from the text.
During our maths work recently Team LL have been revising measures, We have been converting units of length, mass and capacity. We are now focusing on applying our conversion skills to problem solving. We have also been ensuring our protractor skills are up to scratch and learning a whole range of angle facts.
Team LL thoroughly enjoyed working with a visiting author to explore the character, plot and setting of the Harry Potter Books. At the end of the workshop Year 6 were set the challenge to develop their own potions. Of course they were very creative! Great ideas well done.
Taking a break from our current history topic on the Ancient Egyptians, Team LL were set a challenge. It is widely known Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tensing conquered Mt Everest in 1953. However, could it be possible that maybe...just maybe 29 years earlier a couple of English explorers made it to the top in 1924. To this day historians and mountaineers are still debating as to whether or not George Mallory and Andrew Irvine could actually have made it to the top all those years ago. Team LL spent the day taking on the role of historians, archaeologists and detectives looking at a wide range of evidence, exploring the implications and drawing their own conclusions.
In order to develop further our reading comprehension skills, we have been exploring inference questions through the medium of our class novel. Pupils have been discussing and unpicking how characters feel through their actions, interactions and tone. We have also been looking at how characters have changed over time remembering to note details before and after. We have also been focusing on how impressions may be suggested through setting, mood actions and events. We are totally hooked with the narrative and have loved exploring the genre of historic fiction through Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll.
What a busy half term! So far we have worked on percentages, decimals and fractions. We have solved problems involving time and timetables and revised 2d shapes - including quadrilaterals and their properties. This week we are revising area and perimeter and pushing on to apply our knowledge to solve a range of reasoning problems
Well done Team LL your descriptions of Howard Carter's exploration of the hidden tomb were brilliant. Superb use of suspense, technical vocabulary and the broad range of grammar and punctuation expected in high quality writing. After several research and discussion sessions the detail and imagery in your final pieces were fantastic. Well done!
