THE LEGENDARY LEARNERS
Team LL have thoroughly enjoyed this week's mini topic on Christmas around the world. We have combined our ICT, RE, Literacy, Art and geography skills to explore how different cultures and countries celebrate Christmas. We have located countries and cities on maps and using an atlas. We have researched online and in library books to find out about traditions, celebrations, food, singing and festivities from many different countries around the world. In maths we have been applying our knowledge of plotting points in all four quadrants to create festive pictures.

This week we have been reading a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts. We have been developing our VIPERS reading skills. In particular we have been learning how to make accurate and realistic predictions supported with evidence from the text and we have also been developing our summarising skills. We have been further developing written reasoning skills in maths and learning about percentages. We have been finding percentages of amounts by applying our mental arithmetic skills.
After working hard on our biography writing unit Team LL are now focusing on developing their reading comprehension skills this week. We are working specifically on developing our inference and comparison skills. We have been applying these skills whilst exploring a range of texts linking to science, geography and stories with flash backs. We are enjoying our second class novel - Point Blank. Team LL have really caught the reading bug.
In maths we have been finding fractions of amounts and will be spending the next couple of weeks deveoping our knowedge and understanding of percentages. We are also learning about fraction, decimal and percentage equivalence. Its official - WE LOVE MATHS!!! The children in class 6 generated a range of possible investigation questions and created key science vocabulary lists. In pairs the children decided on their own science investigation and carried it out. Children then wrote up their investigations. We are planning to continue to develop our conclusion writing skills further throughout the year.
On Remembrance Day Team LL carried out several activities to learn about and celebrate the sacrifice made by members of our armed forces. They created a Rememrance Day bunting, wrote diary extracts based on true events from WW1 and WW2 and designed their own poppy displays.
After working on place value, calculations and properties of number over the first half term, Team LL have been getting stuck into learning all about fractions. We have looked at fractions of shapes, finding equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering and we are now learning how to calculate fractions. We are making a particular effort to develop our written reasoning skills.
In class we have explored a wide range of biographies, based on the lives of different people through history up to the modern day. We unpicked the features of a biography and had a go at writing a class biography as a shared task. In preparation for Bonfire Night Team LL were set the task of researching the life of Guy Fawkes. Pupils then moved on to developing thier own biography writing based on his life.
As part of our wellbeing work this half term Team LL have been exploring identity. The class have been putting together presentations celebrating their likes and passions. We have explored peer pressure, the importance of being ourselves and accepting similarities and difference in others. The children thoroughly enjoyed sharing their presentations with other pupils in the class.
Whilst learning about the impact of significant individuals in RE, Team LL explored the importance of Martin Luther King on the civil rights movement in America; including the significance of the words in the 'I have a dream' speech' for us today.
Year 6 have absolutely loved learning about natural disasters, tectonic plates and the Pacific Ring of fire. They have applied geography and science to explore the geological make up of the earth and how earthquakes and volcanoes are formed. The class applied their D&T skills to design an earthquake survival kit. During art lessons the class have been sketching a range of natural disasters and are currently in the process of designing models to represent their chosen disaster. Through drama work the class have explored a range of interview scenarios and applied their research skills to find out about a range of disasters around the world and through history.
