This term we are exploring natural disasters and will be working in groups to create models based on natural disasters. IN preparation for this we have been exploring images and the impact of natural disasters. We have been developing sketches in our art books and exploring the use of pencil crayons, pastels and charcoal to represent mood and movement. We have worked on mixed media drawing incorporating photographic images and have begun to discuss plans for our final 3d model in our groups.
Our artist of the half term is JMW Turner we have been exploring his techniques for representing extreme weather in his artwork.

Compare and Group Together Everyday Materials on the Basis of Their Properties
Children in Team AF and LL recapped their learning and knowledge of properties of materials. They revisited and defined property language such as: insulating, magnetic, flammable, permeable, flexible, magnetic and absorbent. The children collected a range of materials and suggested a range of tests they could carry out to test certain properties. Pupils developed their own recording methods and criteria for testing and measuring. They compared, described and sorted a range of materials by their properties. Pupils recorded their findings and fed back to the class. In Year 6 we felt we couldn't let Queen Elizabeth's 70 years on the throne go by without using it as an excuse to engage in some amazing learning activities. Children worked in pairs to research the fascinating life of Queen Elizabeth they then went on to explore features of a factfile before developing their own. The children created an amazing selection of masterpieces which have been entered into a national portrait competition. This was in addition to a range of other art and craft activities to mark the occasion. We learnt and performed the national anthem and then enjoyed getting stuck into a celebratory afternoon tea.
Well done to our Y6 pupils who successfully completed the Bikeability course. It is great to know you guys have demonstrated great listening, superb cycling skills and a clear understanding of how to keep yourselves safe on the roads. Well done!
Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed making the transition from French to Spanish. We have worked hard to learn the basics and to explore the geography of Spain. We have been building key vocabulary and developing conversations in class.
Team LL and AF have thoroughly enjoyed their history work this term. We have been finding out all about the Ancient Egyptians. We have looked at the role of archaeologists and explored the information that historical sources can provide. We have applied our map skills to find Egypt on a map and worked out when the Ancient Egyptians were around compared to other historical areas we have covered. So far we have explored, religion, the structure of society, everyday life and some of the incredible innovations from the time.
We have continued our learning about natural disasters through exploring the makeup of the earth including tectonic plates. We have learnt all about how these can cause natural disasters such as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. We have developed our map and atlas skills and we loved taking on the world map challenge where we had to locate various places we have been learning about on the world map and use locational language to describe their position. We also had fun combining our maths, geography and computing skills to book a trip to Japan including flights, accommodation, transfers and attraction tickets. Some groups had to work to a tight budget others were given the brief of catering for the luxury market. We had lots of fun.
We have been tackling fractions this half term. We began with finding equivalents, comparing and ordering fractions. We then moved on to addition and subtraction of fractions where the denominators were the same and then when they were different. We are experts at finding the lowest common multiple and making sure our fractions have common denominators but remain equivalent to the original fractions. It doesn't stop there we are also able to multiply fractions by fractions and fractions by integers. We are also now able to divide fractions by integers. We have developed the skills to convert improper fractions to mixed fractions and back again and also to simplify our answers as required. We can also find fractions of amounts. In our final week before Christmas we will be learning how to plot co-ordinates in all four quadrants. To be honest it is pretty exhausting being a Year 6 at Park Street - but we do love maths!
In Team LL and AF we have explored fiction and non-fiction. We have been looking at features of historical narrative through reading extracts of Emma Carroll’s Secrets of a Sun King in preparation for next terms work on the Egyptians. In our work on non-fiction texts we have explored biographies. We have explored a wide range of biographies identifying key features. Pupils then carried out research around Guy Fawkes, the Gun Powder Plot and Guy’s gruesome demise. Each child in year 6 then wrote their own biography of Guy Fawkes. Using the features checklist created earlier in the half term pupils were able to evaluate their own writing identifying what went well and setting themselves targets for development. During our grammar work this half term we have looked at a wide range of punctuation including semi-colons and colons. Lots of children are now using these as appropriate within their own writing. We have also been identifying the subject, object and verb within a given sentence and identifying active and passive voice.
In our reading work, pupils have read a wide selection of non-fiction including biographies, information texts linked to natural disasters, historical sources, information texts and web pages linking to our RE topic on Buddhism. We have been equally enthralled by the fiction texts we have read including: a range of modern and historical narratives by authors such as George Layton, Emma Carroll and Derek Landy. We explored Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky poem and read, learnt and performed a selection of Christmas poetry – which we recorded for our Christmas performance. We continue to work on our VIPER skills but have had a more detailed focus on inference reading comprehension questions around characters and their emotions and also questions requiring more detailed comparison description. Team LL and AF had a brilliant day at Crucial Crew. Representatives from the emergency services and other services worked with the children to cover a range of really interesting topics and areas to help children learn about their responsibilities, the law and how to keep themselves safe. A really valuable day of learning. Topics covered.
- The danger of hoax calls - Importance of fire safety - Danger of arson - What a magistrate court is like and what children over 10 need to know when they reach 10 - The importance of road safety - The dangers of child criminal exploitation - The danger of knife and hate crimes |
