After running our daily mile on Feel Good Friday pupils noticed they could feel their hearts beating rapidly. As a result, we decided to investigate and look to see if we could find any patterns in relation to the BPM of our hearts and different types of activity. We recorded our findings and discussed the results.

Team AF were lucky enough to watch the really thought provoking performance of Ikonjane The Lightning Bird. The story touched on identity, migration, folklore, story telling and journeys. The performance was packed full of beautiful sculpture and artwork. Pupils also enjoyed engaging in a drama and music workshop in the afternoon. They also watched a film detailing all the work and different professions involved in bringing the Lightning Bird to life. Children enjoyed learning about a wide range of career opportunities in the arts- its never too early to start being aspirational!
In science we have been investigation circuits as part of our science work on circuits and electricity. Team AF experimented with a range of components. They discussed their findings and have generated a range of questions which will be investigated later this term.
Maths
During our lessons this week, we have looked at comparing and ordering fractions with the same denominator and comparing and ordering non-unit fractions. We have focussed on two key rules for this.
Literacy Following an email from Miss Grayhurst requesting some examples of descriptive writing, we have identified the features of this genre of writing. We have had a focus on the use of powerful adjectives and verbs, the five senses, expanded noun phrases and relative clauses. Following this, we will be planning our own piece of writing to describe our habitat settings. Maths
This week we have focussed on converting improper fractiosn to mixed numbers and vice versa. We used bar model representations to see what each fraction would look like and support us in our working out. Literacy We began writing our letters to Mrs Lawson, to persuade her to allow her staff to take part in the new series of 'I'm a Teacher Get Me Out of Here'. We have written an introductory paragraph, introducing the show and then three further paragraphs relating to culture, food and activities in each habitat. Next week, we will finish our letters before editing and publishing in preparation for them being sent to Mrs Lawson herself. Maths
Throughout our lessons this week we have started our Fractions topic. We initially discussed what a fraction was and the meaning of the numerator and denominator. We learnt that the denominator tells us how many equal parts to split our whole into (shape, amount) and that the numerator tells us how many of those parts we need. Following on from this, we began to look at find a fraction of a shape and the importance of making sure our whole was split into equal parts. We were then able to link this with finding a fraction of an amount. Literacy We began looking at the features used in persuasive writing. We specifically focused on the features found in all persuasive writing (exaggeration, emotive language, rhetorical questions etc) and this week have tailored this specifically to the features found in a persuasive letter. Once we have analysed these further we will be writing our own persuasive letter to Mrs Lawson. We are hoping that we can convince her to allow staff members to take part in this year's 'I'm a Teacher Get Me Out of Here'. Please see the letter below relating to WW1 Day and Ancient Greek Day, both of which will take place in the final week of this half term.
Maths
Throughout the week we have started to look at angles. We began by learning about degrees of turn and understanding what it meant to do a full turn, half and quarter. We have focused on the different angle types including acute, obtuse, right and reflex and thought about the properties of each one. This led us onto identifying the different angle types through sight recognition and when told the degree of an angle. Literacy This week during literacy lessons we have focused on war poetry, particularly poetry written during and after the First World War. We looked at the author's choice of language, in particular figurative language (smiles, personification, alliteration, metaphors and onomatopoeia) and how this impacts on the reader. Towards the end of the week, we wrote our own poems, concentrating on imagery used within poems and how our language choice would the pictures we are creating in the readers' minds. Maths
We began the week by focusing on the perimeter of rectilinear shapes. To begin with, we did this using concrete materials (square tiles), before applying this to abstract questions. We had to use our knowledge in relation to the properties of rectangles and squares in order to find the length of the missing sides on some of the shapes. We then revisited the written method for dividing by a single digit number and then applied this to word problems. We discussed the language used in worded questions and what this means. The questions required us to use our knowledge of other areas of maths including conversion and money and apply this to division, Literacy Following on from a reading comprehension paper about underage soldiers fighting in WW1, we discussed the opinions that different people may have about this topic (parents, siblings, the government etc). We also continued to look at features of newspapers and finished an article by writing in the missing feature: headline, 5W introduction and captions. Next week, we will be writing our own newspaper articles about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the start of the war. |
