This week in maths the Reception children have been learning about patterns. The children know that patterns follow rules or have a mathematical relationship! On Tuesday, the children enjoyed using the paints and shapes to continue patterns created by Miss Overton. Yesterday, they enjoyed creating their own patterns using shapes, unifix cubes, counters and links and were able to describe their patterns!

Yesterday was Safer Internet Day. Children in Team EO began thinking about what 'online' meant and learnt that it meant using the internet. The children learnt different things that the internet is used for. The children gave me a thumbs up for different ways technologies that they had used to go online. Team EO listened attentively to a story called 'Digiduck', this story what about a duck who liked to use the internet to play a game but it didn't end well as 'Digiduck' shared his password with his friends and bought things on the game that cost his parents real money! We had a discussion about how to stay safe when playing these type of games.
Today we held a circle time and the children shared their favourite game to play online. This half-term in History we have begun our topic on 'Why are these people famous?'. We began by starting the topic thinking about what history is and comparing past London to modern London, we used our knowledge from Geography last term to successfully locate London and know that it is the capital of London. The children sorted pictures of London past and present. We then looked at the jobs that people held in 1666 such as gong farmers, rat-catchers, chimney sweeps and chandler. We discussed how firefighters then were different to firefighters today. Team EO then explored Tudor buildings and discussed why they were called Tudor houses. The Year 1 children have had to draw, label and make Tudor houses to show what they have learnt. I can't wait to show you these when they are finished!The Excellent Elephants had a lovely time on Welly Walk today. The children carefully listened to a different version of 'Little Red Riding Hood' in the shelter then were challenged to create a map of the path that Little Red Riding Hood took from her house to Grandma's house. They then used the natural materials to make Little Red Riding Hood's and Grandma's houses. The children took on the roles of 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'Grandma', 'Wolf' and 'Woodcutter' and used their maps to take the correct path through the woods! Today we celebrated Chinese New Year by wearing it 'red' to school. The children were challenged by Mr Holmes to answer the following question 'What animals are part of the Chinese zodiac?'.
The children started by exploring the room and found posters of different animals. They then listened carefully to the Chinese New Year story which told the children how the animals had raced to determine which animals would have a year named after them. Children then discussed what they thought a zodiac was and learnt that they are 'signs' and that each child has a birth sign for the month in which they are born. We spoke about the birth signs we use in England and then discussed how each Chinese New Year is a year of an animals. We learnt that this year is the year of the Tiger and we are going to explore which Chinese Zodiac children were born in. Children then explored a range of activities, from creating lanterns to writing wish's (a tradition we learnt about) to tasting Chinese food! We had lots of fun! |
