In preparation for the school closure, please find below information relating to home learning programmes. You will find some details regarding the core subjects (Reading, Writing, Maths) and how these can be accessed each day. In addition to this, you will find some information regarding other curriculum areas as well as a suggested timetable to structure your child's daily learning. These activities have been carefully resourced to ensure that learning can continue as much as possible whilst the school remains closed. Please note that these materials are exactly the same materials as those that will be sent home with the children tomorrow. ![]()

Our topic this week has been about woodland animals. We enjoyed learning about animals that are native to the UK and which animals are nocturnal.
We have been saving animals from our "woodland web" using tweezers. We have created pictures of woodland animals using flat shapes and have been designing and labelling our own woodland creatures with a variety of different features. Our story this week was the Gruffalo and we enjoyed making a Gruffalo crumble using oats and a variety of different features the Gruffalo has on his body! In maths we have been learning to name solid shapes and can describe shapes by using words to describe their properties. We have also enjoyed writing some secret notes to our friends and adults in class using our phonics knowledge to help us! We all dressed up as our favourite characters for World Book Day and we looked brilliant! We enjoyed listening to stories and did some independent writing about our favourite book. Our mystery readers this week have been Miss Hodgson, Heidi's mum and Joel's mum! This half term our topic is "Animals" and each week we will learn about a different story. This week we are learning about Jungle Animals and our story has been Rumble in the Jungle!
We have been describing jungle animals this week and have drawn pictures and labelled them. We have been learning about repeating patterns and have been using beads and shapes to make our repeating patterns to look like necklaces. We have been learning to rip and tear tissue paper, which is actually very tricky, and have been learning how to "overlap" to create a collage mask of a tiger. We have loved using our jungle role play area and have been sitting in our jungle jeep to see what animals we can name and spot. Continuing on our pattern theme we have been matching animals to their correct pattern. This week our mystery readers have been Mrs Lawson, Joseph's grandma and Rowan's mum! We have had such an exciting week preparing for our visit from The Merry Men and The Sheriff of Nottingham.
In the construction area we have been using various different items to create castles and have been able to explain some of their features. We have used a variety of flat shapes in the maths area to design castle pictures and have named the shapes we used and their properties to describe the pictures. We have used the small world castle to create stories about Robin Hood and his Merry Men and have made a dungeon! We have used foil to make pictures of knights and have been learning to cut, tear, roll and scrunch to make the features. We have used spaghetti and marshmallows to complete a challenge to make the tallest or the widest castle. The knights visit was really fun! We had a picnic together in our "Sherwood Forest" classroom to begin with. We all got to have a go at archery in the hall and hitting the target was really tricky! The knights talked to us about attack weapons, armour, weapons to defend themselves, clothing and pennants. We learnt so many new things and could use the words the knights had taught us. We all got to hold some of the weapons and they were really heavy. Some of the weapons were taller than us! We also celebrated PJ day and brought in our favourite stories to share. We read with our friends and talked about why we liked our favourite book and listened to some of them at story time. We had hot chocolate and listened to some of the adults favourite books. We have had so much fun this week learning about the story of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. We were really lucky to receive a video message from the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. He told us he will be coming to Wombwell to look for Robin Hood and asked us to put up his wanted poster.
We decided that we wanted to help Robin Hood instead so we wrote some wanted posters for the Sheriff of Nottingham! In the role play area we built King Richard's castle and have been acting as the characters to make up our own stories. In maths we have been counting money to give to the poor that the Sheriff stole from. In our Woodland area we have been exploring different natural materials and reading books about the animals and environment. This week we have been continuing to learn about Robin Hood and Castles.
We have been threading beads onto numbered wands for Cinderella's Fairy Godmother to use. We have played some maths games by rolling dice to reach the end of the castle trail and in the creative area have used different colours to paint some characters for the Sheriff of Nottingham's dungeon. We made some sign posts for Sherwood forest and have stuck them around the classroom. We decided to try and trick the Sheriff and his men by sticking the sign posts pointing in the wring direction. Friar Tuck, Sir Noah and Guy of Gisborne sent us a video message this week and we were lucky enough to see Robin Hood safe and sound in the background, even though the Sheriff was after him! We had lots of fun on number day and have been learning to complete colour by numbers using addition to make sure the colours we use are correct. We have had so much fun this week learning about Chinese New Year!
We have taken part in lots of activities and learnt how to say Happy New Year in Mandarin. We tried some Chinese food including noodles, sweet chilli sauce, rice and prawn crackers. We made some Chinese dragons in the creative area, wrote Chinese numbers and symbols for the year we were born. We listened to some Chinese music and songs and performed a dragon dance! We wore red to celebrate because red is considered a lucky colour in China. We have had so much fun this week learning about fireworks and have enjoyed talking about the bonfires and firework parties that we saw! We have been listening to fireworks and watching a video of a display and we wrote down the colours and sounds we heard. We have been using creative materials to make firework pictures, rolling a ball through paint to create a firework scene on black paper and have been mark making and writing tricky words in glitter!
We have practiced segmenting and blending again this week and are making progress with this. We read a story together and segmented each word. We have also been practicing re-reading sentences from the beginning to make sure we understand a story. We have been reading CVC words and matching them to pictures. This is linked to Phase 2 Letters and Sounds. Some of us have been reading and matching simple Phase 2 sentences. We have been learning about flat shapes this week. We have been learning to name these simple flat shapes – circle, square, rectangle, oval, pentagon, hexagon, kite, rhombus. We have also been learning to identify and count the sides, corners and points. We have tried guessing the name of a shape when it is covered up and only part of it is shown. We have described what we can see and tried to use the words “curved” and “straight” when talking about the sides. We have also practiced forming our numbers the correct way. We have enjoyed making poppies using the bottom of plastic bottles. We painted them red and black and these will be displayed with poppies from other classes to show we remember fallen heroes. We have loved learning about superheroes this week! We have written in speech bubbles what we think superheroes might say, made a split pin Spider-Man and also had lots of fun exploring in our Autumn area!
In Literacy we have been focusing on segmenting and blending to read and write. We have been reading words for Spiderman that are VC and CVC words. We have been learning to write words within a phoneme frame by talking like a robot and writing the sounds in the correct order. Some of us have been learning to point to each sound and blend them together and make changes if we have written them in the wrong order. We have been learning to read tricky words this week and spot these in books. In maths we have been learning one more this week, and some of us have been learning two more and ten more identifying the value of the digits in two digit numbers. We began by using objects and adding one more object to see how many there were altogether. Then we moved onto using a number line to understand that one means counting on to the next number. Some of us have been able to do this in our head with no visual support! |
