The children had a very exciting job today to decorate the nursery Christmas tree together. Firstly, we talked about how we could decorate it and some of the children shared the things they have on their tree at home. We talked about and clapped the syllables in the words: star, angel, tinsel, beads, baubles, candy canes and decorations. We counted the syllables and showed how many in each word using our fingers. The children worked together to decorate the tree, thinking about where to place the decorations to make it look beautiful! They are very proud of their tree which they decorated with no adult help at all!

This week, we are continuing with our learning about the traditional story of Christmas. In addition to our small world resources, we have also added some dressing up outfits and props and the children have enjoyed the experience of dressing up as the different characters and acting out the story with their friends. It was lovely to see the children learning to be independent with putting on and taking off their costumes and also to see some kind children helping each other to get dressed.
At group time today we were building our core strength and practising the skills we will need to be good writers. Firstly we had a go at ribbon dancing using our ribbon wands. We practised making different large shapes in the air including circles, lines going across and up and down as well as curved rainbow shapes. Then we transferred these patterns onto large paper using our crayons. The shapes we practised are all ones which we will use when we write letters. The children really enjoyed dancing and making their marks to the song "Happy" as it was Feel Good Friday.
In nursery we are working really hard to help us to master numbers and deepen our understanding. We have been learning about numbers 1 and 2 using Numberblocks. The children are getting really good at recognising different representations of the numbers and talking about them. On our Maths table today, the children have an invitation to sort objects and pictures into whether they represent 1 or 2. We also had a go at group time and the children were encouraged to explain their thinking. We have some super Mathematicians in nursery!
This week we have begun to learn about the traditional story of Christmas. We have lots of different versions of the story and we will be reading them together over the week. In our small world area, we have some figures and different props to help us to tell the story in our play and we have lots of opportunities to make and decorate stars in the different areas of provision. We have been learning the words 'stable' 'manger' 'shepherds' and 'kings' as well as the names of the characters. Here are some photos of us learning in our provision together so far this week.
In addition to all our provision activities, we also baked some Pudsey biscuits. There was so many learning opportunities in this activity. Some children had the opportunity to weigh out and mix the ingredients and then all the children carefully rolled and cut out their own biscuits.
Today was a special day for us as we raised money to support Children in Need. All children and staff were invited to wear non-uniform or Pudsey themed clothes and donate £!.00. We talked about being kind and helping children and this linked with our learning about friendship earlier in the week. During the day we had a go at lots of different activities including some Pudsey Bear dancing and a game of "Pudsey Says" which was great for developing our listening skills. In our provision, we fished for spots in our water tray and counted them, we used tweezers to place spots (pom-poms) onto Pudsey's bandana and we created different Pudsey bear pictures using stickers and our mark making skills. Here are a few photos of us in action:
For our baking activity today, we made rainbow buns to link with our theme of colours. Some children had the opportunity to weigh out and mix the ingredients together and then we added different food colouring. Then all the children made their own bun by carefully spooning some mixture of each colour into their bun case. I hope they tasted as delicious as they looked!
In the outdoor area today, we had lots of fun developing our skills with our new basketball net. Firstly we practised aiming the ball to try and get it into the net. As we got more confident, we moved backwards to make it more challenging. Then we decided to make our own scoreboard so we could record our scores and see who got the most points. This was a perfect opportunity to practise writing our names as well as numbers. We have some budding basketball players!
Our new book of the week is "Elmer" by David McKee. Today we read the book and talked about how Elmer is different to the other elephants because he is not grey- he is patchwork! This linked in well with our theme of how it is okay to be different and also with our colours theme. In the small world area, we have jungle animals and the children have been using the different materials to build a jungle for Elmer and his animal friends. In the creative area, we have been creating our own patchwork elephants and in the mark making area we have been designing our own patterns for an elephant.
