This week we are learning about creatures that live under the sea. We began today by reading the book "Commotion in the Ocean" which introduced us to lots of different sea creatures. Our provision activities this week include: a tray with blue cornflour gloop and sea creatures to explore, clams in the water tray, an under the sea small world area, a numbered magnetic fishing game to play together, creating sea creatures using different collage and mark making materials and making sea creatures in the dough. We have also enhanced our classroom with lots of fiction and non-fiction books about sea creatures.

After singing the song "Walking Through the Jungle" we set off on our welly walk to the nature reserve which had been turned into the jungle! There were lots of jungle animals hiding in the trees for us to spot! We went exploring in teams with a clipboard and an animal spotter sheet. The children worked as a team to spot the different animals and then mark them off on their sheet- a purposeful mark making opportunity. Once all the animals had been found, the children donned their animal masks and became the animals themselves! Everyone had so much fun while learning together.
The children really developed their concentration skills as they decorated a bun to look like a monkey today. First, they melted chocolate and carefully spread in on the top of their bun. Then they used different sweets to make it look like a monkey from our book of the week- Dear Zoo. Finally the buns were left to set in time for home time. I hope you enjoyed eating your creation!
Today the children in nursery were very excited to come to nursery wearing their favourite book character costumes. We paraded around nursery in small groups and the children guessed who everyone was dressed as. The nursery adults were dressed as wild animals from our Dear Zoo book of the week. During the session we enjoyed lots of stories, including "Giraffe's Can't Dance" read by Miss McGinnes dressed as a giraffe,
Our Maths song of the week is "Five Little Monkeys Swinging in the Trees" to link in with our wild animals theme. At group time we have sung and acted out the song with children to represent the monkeys. The children were encouraged to show the amount of monkeys on their fingers and take one away each time the crocodile snaps until there are none left. We used the words take away and less to help us.
We have set up our Maths table with the song resources so the children can apply this learning independently in their play. This week in nursery we are continuing our learning about animals with a focus on wild animals. Our book of the week is Dear Zoo. Today we read the book together and talked about which way to hold it, how to turn the pages and how to read from left to right and top to bottom. We also encouraged the children to join in with the reading. We have enhanced our reading area with lots of different books about animals and it has been lovely to see lots of children choosing to share books together and read to our soft toy animals.
In the construction area we have been building animal homes and adding our wild animals to them. We have also added pets and pet resources to our home corner so the children can role play looking after their pets. Here are some photos of us engaged in learning in our continuous provision so far this week: Today we continued with our learning about dinosaurs on welly walk in the nature reserve. The children found dinosaur masks hidden all over the area and they loved using them to role play. They also found numbered dinosaur footprints which were great for practising our number recognition.
In addition to this, the children had a go at being paleontologists! They used small tools to dig and scrape to look for fossils and were amazed that all their hard work paid off and they found some dinosaurs! This activity required lots of patience and focus as well as excellent fine motor skills. Well done Shooting Stars- you were amazing! As part of our learning this week, we have found out that millions of years ago dinosaurs hatched out of eggs!
Today we decided to make edible dinosaur eggs for our baking activity. Firstly, we started with butter and the children found out that it melted when it was put into the microwave. Next we added marshmallows and melted those too. Then the children crushed oreo biscuits with a spoon and stirred in rice crispies. Finally this was added to the melted mixture and the children all had a turn at stirring it. Once the mixture was ready, the children used their hands and fingers to mould it into an egg shape. Some children liked the texture but some were not too keen! The words they used to describe it were: gooey, sticky, crispy, hard, noisy and crunchy. For a focused activity this week we have been making dinosaur models using 3D materials and paints. We have learnt about different ways to attach materials using lots of different skills. Each dinosaur is unique as they all decided for themselves how they wanted to make them look.
Here are some photos of us in action! It was such a windy day today, we decided to take our ribbons outside and find out what happened to them in the wind. The children enjoyed running with their ribbons and making different shapes and patterns with them. This was so much fun and great for their physical development as well as an opportunity for a spot of Science learning too! |
