Today all the children and staff came to school wearing red and we had an exciting day of learning all about Chinese New Year. We learnt about the story of the animals and how the order of the years was decided and then found out which year we were all born in. We explored Chinese writing and had a go at writing some numbers using black paint and also with brushes in glitter. We enjoyed watching a clip of a dragon dance at a new year parade and then got creative with ribbons to perform our own dragon dance. The children really developed their fine motor skills as they used folding and cutting techniques to make their own Chinese dragon. They also designed and made a Chinese lantern. One of the most exciting parts of the day was tasting some different Chinese food including prawn crackers, rice, noodles and dipping sauce.

Our learning this week has been focused around the story of The Gingerbread Man. In provision we have been telling the story with our friends using puppets of the characters. We had gingerbread scented playdough and the children have used their fingers to manipulate it to make different gingerbread shapes and then add tiny decorations- great for developing our fine motor skills!
We enjoyed baking our own gingerbread men to eat but unfortunately one ran away to the nature reserve!! We wrote wanted posters and displayed them around school so the other children could help us look for him. Happy New Year! The children have all settled back into school brilliantly after the holidays and we are amazed at the progress they are all making with their reading!
This week we have begun our new theme for learning all about different stories. We have started with the traditional tale of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have read and compared different versions of the story and have been acting it out using our wooden bridge in the outdoor area. We have learnt about speech bubbles and the children have been using their phonics knowledge to sound out words and sentences to add to speech bubbles for the characters in the story. |
