Today all the children and staff came to school wearing red and we had an exciting day of learning all about Chinese New Year. We learnt about the story of the animals and how the order of the years was decided and then found out which year we were all born in. We explored Chinese writing and had a go at writing some numbers using black paint and also with brushes in glitter. We enjoyed watching a clip of a dragon dance at a new year parade and then got creative with ribbons to perform our own dragon dance. The children really developed their fine motor skills as they used folding and cutting techniques to make their own Chinese dragon. They also designed and made a Chinese lantern. One of the most exciting parts of the day was tasting some different Chinese food including prawn crackers, rice, noodles and dipping sauce.

Our learning this week has been focused around the story of The Gingerbread Man. In provision we have been telling the story with our friends using puppets of the characters. We had gingerbread scented playdough and the children have used their fingers to manipulate it to make different gingerbread shapes and then add tiny decorations- great for developing our fine motor skills!
We enjoyed baking our own gingerbread men to eat but unfortunately one ran away to the nature reserve!! We wrote wanted posters and displayed them around school so the other children could help us look for him. Happy New Year! The children have all settled back into school brilliantly after the holidays and we are amazed at the progress they are all making with their reading!
This week we have begun our new theme for learning all about different stories. We have started with the traditional tale of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have read and compared different versions of the story and have been acting it out using our wooden bridge in the outdoor area. We have learnt about speech bubbles and the children have been using their phonics knowledge to sound out words and sentences to add to speech bubbles for the characters in the story. Wow! We have some budding actors and actresses in Reception! The children performed Wriggly Nativity for all our parents and carers to watch. The children sang every word of the songs, performed all the actions and acted their parts brilliantly! We are so proud of each and every one of them.
Thank you to all the parents and carers who came to watch us. We were overwhelmed by your positive comments! Have a lovely Christmas and we will look forward to seeing you in the new year for another term of fun and learning. We are getting excited for our performance of Wriggly Nativity on Thursday 19th December. We have been busy learning lots of new songs and practising telling the different parts of the story.
We hope you will all be coming to watch us! Please go to the main school entrance at 8.45am where you will be able to have refreshments while we all get dressed up. Wish us luck for our first ever school performance!! It's two weeks into the new school year and its good to see new friendships have been made and the children are settling in. There maybe a few tears in the mornings as they say their good byes and get used to their new surroundings, However, rest assured that during the day they are busy playing, investigating and making friends.
All the staff in Reception are enjoying getting to know the Robins and their individual personalities. This week in Numeracy we have been learning about money. We have identified coins, matched their value using 1p coins and we have purchased items from our pet shop using the correct coins.
We then developed this further by identifying coins of greater value than the items we were buying and some children could tell me they knew they could use a larger value coin to pay for an item because it was bigger (worth more). Please keep revisiting this at home by identifying coins (1p-20p was our main focus), count out coins to pay for items or let children handle money if you go to the shop etc to have the experience of paying and recieving change - this is a good talking point when using money of greater value than the item being bought. Today we have been investigating what a texture is and how we discover the texture of an item. We spoke about also on occasion, being able to know the texture of something by looking at it.
We discussing different textures and children came up with some amazing words to describe different textures...cold, slippy, spikey, furry, fluffy, hot, hard, soft, sticky, bumpy, rough. We loooked at examples of textures in the world around us and talked about the importance of certain items being certain textures. We then went to Welly Walk and looked for different items of varying textures to feel and discuss. This week we have been busy making cards and calendar to bring home, these look amazing and your children have tried really hard with them! We have also made an extra card each (as have all the children in school) to take to Barnsley hospice, Wakefield hospice and the hospital - for people who may not recieve a card this year. All the adults in the Energetic Explorers would like to wish you a wonderful Christmas and New Year. We hope you get to spend lots of time with your friends, families and loved ones and have lots of fun together!
See you in 2019!! |
