This week we have started our non-chronological reports; we are really excited because we get to choose which animal we research and write about! We have planned our writing and structured our introduction and conclusion, ensuring they link and that we have hooked our reader in and then hooked our reader out. When complete we will publish an Encyclopaedia of all our combined writing.

We have started our new maths topic of area. We understand area to be the space taken up by a 2D shape and that it is measured in square units. To ensure we understand area before calculating it, we explored finding the area by counting square units.
For a few weeks we have been carrying out an observation over time. We have germinated some runner beans and recorded our observations on a daily basis. We have some growing in a jar untouched and some we can physically handle also. Some of us are fascinated and find it very gripping (so to speak) and some of us prefer to keep our distance! We also had a Poetry Day this week: We had a lot of fun writing poems which rhymed and designing actions with which to perform them. Our Y5 poem, with Team DB, was about KFC (other fried chicken fast foods are available).
This week is Shakespeare Week. We have looked at different versions of the opening of Macbeth and different costume designs through film and theatre. We acted out the cauldron scene and we designed our own interpretation of The Weird Sisters.
We designed patterns using repeat and angles and we were impressed with the beautiful designs we created!
This week we learned about the Hindu festival of Holi; the festival of colours. We learned the story of Krishna and the legend of Holika and Prahlad. We looked at the celebrations starting with bonfires and the carnival of colours with coloured water and powder. We designed our own colourful t-shirts.
This week was science week. We carried out an experiment to see the effects of different liquids on eggshells, as it would replicated the effects on the enamel of your teeth. We place one in water as a control then one in cola, one in orange juice, and one in vinegar. We left them for 24 hours and another 24 hours. After 2 days the egg in cola stained black and the egg in orange juice peeled the outer layer of its shell away. The egg in vinegar expanded, lost all of its shell and became bouncy like a rubber ball!
This week we used the repeat code to create different shapes on logo. We divided 360 by the amount of corners to work out the correct angle for the turns.
As part of our new science topic we looked at the different types of skeletons living things can have. Endoskeletons: a backbone and frame on the inside that grows with the animal. Exoskeleton: a protective armour on the outside of the body that is shed and regrown when the animal outgrows it. Hydrostatic-skeleton: no hard skeleton or shell. We organised x-rays into the three categories and made our own fact sheets.
