Literacy We have used our text driver, 'Ickabog', as a focus for writing. We have revisited expanded noun phrases and converted speech in a narrative to a playscript. We finished the week by designing our own 'Ickabog' based on clues within the text.

As part of the Year 4 and Year 5 Geography topic, Teams JD, LF and DB visited Whitby. The purpose of the visit was for the children to be able to understand the similarities and differences between Wombwell and Whitby, allowing the children to compare the geographical features, heritage, economy, history and industry.
By visiting Whitby, the children had the chance to experience all the favourite parts of the coastal town and were better informed about Whitby and therefore able to make comparisons between the two towns. They even got to visit John Freeman’s art gallery – our artist of the term. The majority of the day was self-guided, giving the children a chance to visit the harbour, town and Abbey grounds. During the trip, the children also had the chance walk up/down the iconic 199 steps and visit Whitby Abbey itself for an educational workshop led by the Abbey staff. The children learnt about why the Abbey was founded and how it has changed through time. They investigated evidence of the Anglo-Saxon monastery, learnt about what archaeological techniques can tell us about the past, and explore what life was like in the later Benedictine monastery, imagining what it was like to be a monk. We are very excited about our trip to Whitby on Friday. Here are a few reminders about the day:
Many thanks, Mrs Firth, Mrs Bamforth and Mr Davison We have had an extremely busy start to our learning in Team LF. Here's an overview of what we've done:
Maths We focussed on our place value knowledge, reading and writing numbers, identifying the value of digits, comparing and ordering numbers, and counting in powers of 10. We also started our three week times table challenge and have shown great improvement already. Literacy In reading we have started to read J.K.Rowling's 'Ickabog', focussing on the vocabulary used within the text. During our writing lessons we have started to analyse the features of a playscript. As part of the Year 4 and Year 5 Geography topic next year, we are currently organising a class trip to Whitby, which is due to take place on Friday 22nd September 2023. This topic focusses heavily on the similarities and differences between Wombwell and Whitby, allowing the children to compare the geographical features, heritage, economy, history and industry. We feel that by visiting Whitby itself, the children will experience all the favourite parts of this coastal town and be better informed about Whitby and therefore able to make comparisons between the two towns.
The majority of the day will be self-guided, giving the children a chance to visit the harbour, beach, town and Abbey. Throughout the trip, the children will have the opportunity to experience, fossil hunting, sandcastle building, walk up/down the iconic 199 steps and head up to Whitby Abbey itself for an educational workshop led by the Abbey staff. All these activities have strong cross-curricular links with Geography, History and Science. Children are required to take a packed lunch with them. We will also ensure the children have the opportunity for a short break in the morning and before heading home and therefore further snacks may be necessary. To enable the children to make the most of the day, and to avoid rush hour traffic, we would ask that the children arrive at school for 7:45am, ready for the coach’s departure at 8:00am. On return, the coach will arrive back at school for 5:30pm in the evening. Although this will be a long day for the children and staff, it will allow us plenty of time to fit all the activities into one day and ensure that the children get the best experience of Whitby as possible. The total cost of this trip is £20.00 per child. This has been subsidised by school funds to offset costs to you. The price for this trip includes your child’s transport to and from Whitby, entrance to Whitby Abbey and an educational workshop led by the Abbey staff. We appreciate that this may seem costly, however we feel that without this trip the children will be at a disadvantage as they will not have first-hand experience of the town of Whitby. If you would like your child to participate in this fantastic day of learning, would you please complete the attached slip, payments can be made through the School Gateway or by cash or cheque. Please ensure payment, your consent and lunch details are received no later than Friday 8th September 2023. Kindest Regards, Mrs L Firth, Mrs D Bamforth and Mr J Davison Dear Parents/Carers,
In order to help pupils improve their times-table skills and speed we are launching a three week times-table challenge. Pupils will be completing a times-tables race every day in school for the next three weeks. After each race, pupils will have a new target to try to beat the next day. We will also be sending home a tables’ race every day. At home, pupils need to complete as many times-tables as possible in 10 minutes. At the end of the challenge, we will send you a letter home to let you know how much progress your child has made. Many thanks for your continued support, Mrs L Firth |
