This morning, Team LF engaged in an online virtual assembly, an annual celebration hosted by Parent Zone and Google. The aim of the assembly was to focus on some online safety scenarios in which children had to vote for the safest and sensible option about how to behave. For example, what they would do if a friend was sent an inappropriate message from another person. The children had some great ideas about what to do in each case and could talk around the reasons for their responses. It was lovely to see the whole class engaged, sharing ideas and discussing what they had learnt from the assembly.

Researching in Science allows children to use secondary sources of evidence, often when the question raised is impossible or unsafe for children to answer first hand. It enables children to compare and evaluate the information they gather from a range of sources and see that questions don’t always have definite answers.
Using our research skills, we used textbooks and the internet (a range of search engines to link with our Computing knowledge) to find out how some animals are adapted to their environment in order to survive. We focussed on three main habitats (the Arctic, Mojave Desert and Amazon Rainforest) in to find out about the adaptations of the polar bear, camel and orangutan. Along the way, there were lots of surprises, such as a camel having heat-resistant pads on it's knees and elbows so that it doesn't burn itself on the sand. Maths
Mastering number - The children have learnt about square numbers. Year 4 - This week Year 4 have been working on understanding how many ones, tens and hundreds are in 1000. Year 5 - The children have focussed on understanding hundredths and part of a whole. Literacy Throughout the past two weeks, Team LF have been working on producing a lyrical poem about the Ickabog. They have included rhyme and elements of SPAMO (similes, personification, alliteration, metaphors and onomatopoeia). We will be posting these on to JK Rowling and will await her response. Today, the children have been celebrating and learning about the history of Children In Need and how it started in November 1980. The children developed an understanding how the charity developed from a tradition established during the 1930s, whereby there would be a 5 minute radio plea on Christmas Day for those children who were less fortunate. This then progressed into a televised plea as technology progressed, until, finally becoming a telethon on national TV. Further to this, the children established an understanding of Sir Terry Wogan's legacy and how he was the face of Children in Need for many years.
To help raise money for this amazing cause, the children were invited to wear spots for the day, as well as taking part in Spot-tacular event, chasing and finding as many spots as they could around Park Street. Unfortunately, Team LF found 49/50 in the given time but that didn't stop the children from having fun. Throughout the day, they also participated in maths events, as well activities during our 'Incredible Us!' time. The highlight of the day was definitely the bun sale at break time! To celebrate Remembrance Day, during our PSHE lesson, Team LF discussed the importance of remembering those who have sacrificed their lives for us and our freedom. We spoke about the phrase ‘Lest We Forget’ and how the words remind us not to forget those who have lost their lives in wars and conflicts while we live in peace.
As part of our discussion we also spoke about The Great War, Armistice Day, the Cenotaph, memorials, the significance of the poppy and Remembrance Sunday. We looked at photographs of the Cenotaph in November 1920, using our oracy skills to answer three main questions: What can we see? What can we infer? What do we wonder? |
