During our PSHE lesson today, and in preparation for the Autumn school holiday, Team LF focussed on the history of Bonfire Night and why it is celebrated within the UK. We discussed who Guy Fawkes was and how his Gunpowder Plot in 1605 failed to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London.
We then looked at the importance of being safe on Bonfire Night and discussed what we can do in order to keep ourselves and others safe.

This half term we have started learning about Islam. We have learnt that people who follow the Islamic religion are called Muslims and that the faith was founded in Saudi Arabia. We know that Muslims believe in one God, who is called Allah and that he has ninety-nine names. During our lessons, we have also learnt that the Islamic faith follows the 'Five pillars of Islam' and these are the main beliefs of the religion. ,
We had the privilege of a workshop, led by Imran, a follower of the Islamic faith. Imran focussed on the importance of prayer, the times in which Muslims pray and how they pray within a mosque. He brought artefacts for the children to look at and also taught the children the key features of a Mosque building. In Computing this half term, we have been focussing on computer systems and networks. We have learnt that systems are built in using various parts and can communicate with other devices. We have thought about the input, processes and output in order to design our own digital teddy. Further to this, we have considered how digital systems are used in the every day world, including traffic lights and online shopping. We have experimented with search engines and compared the results of different engines, thinking carefully about how web searches can be refined. During our 'Incredible Us!' session today, the children had the opportunity to decorate biscuits - Halloween style.
The children enjoyed using orange, black and white icing to decorate their biscuits, creating Autumnal/Halloween designs. Although, the best part and most popular part was definitely the eating of the biscuits. This half term, Team LF have focussed on their artist of the term - John Freeman. They conducted some research into the life of John and also generated some questions in preparation for his interview during our Whitby trip. The class have also been sketching shells, focussing on their use of shading and creating shadows. During our indoor P.E. sessions this half term, we have focussed on Bollywood dance moves, sequencing and performing. We worked as a whole class and used various moves and different dance styles, including the Peacock, Lotus, The Prayer as well as various foot movements. The children then worked in smaller groups to choreograph their own routines using their learnt moves. Many of the children were confident in their routine and happily performed to the rest of the team. The children have enjoyed listening to the different music styles from Indian culture.
This half term, Team LF have started their 'Light' topic in Science. We have focussed on the human eye, identifying and labelling the parts. The children learnt that light rays travel in straight lines, reflecting off an object and then travelling in a straight line to the eye. They then moved on to learning about what happens when light hits a mirror, and this linked onto understanding about how periscopes work. Within our 'Pattern Seeking' lesson, the children investigated whether the distance from the sun impacts on a planet's temperature and whether there were any patterns in this. We recognised that as the planets become further from the sun, their temperature becomes cooler. However, there was at least one anomaly. Want to know which planet didn't fit the pattern? Ask one of the Team LF scientists to tell you more! During our Spanish lessons we have been learning the vocabulary for 'My home'. We have completed speaking, listening and writing activities in order to secure our knowledge on the new language we have been taught. 'National Black History Month 2023 - Celebrating our sisters'
To celebrate National Black History Month, Team LF initially discussed what it means to be black and British. We focussed on Black and Mixed Heritage British women who have shaped history, learning about their achievements and accomplishments. This included influential sportswomen, politicians and activists, scientists, artists, presenters and musicians. We then dug a bit deeper into four women in particular - Rosa Parks, Nina Simone, Claudia Jones and Tessa Sanderson. We used our knowledge from Computing (systems and searching) to find out key information about these women in order to create fact files. |
